Real. Also hot take: maybe, JUST MAYBE, Kanade would have been a better villain/antagonist if it weren’t for the incest. Like, I just can’t with the fact she got that sweet home alabama type shit with Hibiki. Like I feel bad for Hibiki :( incest sucks and IS a horrible type of abuse that no one should EVER go through. But like, I don’t know. The fact it just gets added to the plot at what feels like random is just. Something. But hey, at least it isn’t romanced/romanticized. Cus that would make it 10 times worse and just suck for victims of incest, the SDRA2 community and just ruin a bit of the game for us.

I don't know how to feel about the twins, (mainly talking about kanade) and the fact that there's incest thrown into their plot. I think it's important for incest to be talked about in games/media like how it's important for other types of trauma and mental health issues to be talked about in media, and incest is a type of trauma that people do go through, and it shouldn't be ignored just because it's uncomfortable to talk about (like with any other type of trauma or mental health rep) but the issue is I don't know if the twins are written in a way that is an accurate, but more importantly respectful portrayal of that kind of trauma and how it affects people, and its not my place to judge if it is or not since I've never been through that kind of trauma before. I do kind of dislike the fact that they're twins with that though because that makes it feel like its much more of a trope/cliche than a accurate, respectful portrayal of that kind of abuse.

Honestly, i’m not in a place to judge either because i’ve never experienced that type of abuse. I feel like it’s important to ask survivors of the accuracy of the portrayal/if they feel it’s done respectfully. It definitely has problems, and I can see that even as an outsider from it- kanade being the way that she is, portrayed as this supervillain who’s incredibly smart and flawless and domineering, makes people simp for her. that’s more of a fanon interpretation- i don’t feel that her actions are romanticized in game, but people will see what they want to see in a piece of media. the fans who lust for her are part of what would sour the otonokoni twins for me, but i don’t fault the canon writing for that.

i absolutely agree that these things should be portrayed respectfully, though respectfully could be different for anyone, because no survivor’s abuse is the same, and one person could relate to something another wouldn’t, you know? The one thing I do seek to criticize is 1. hibiki’s initial aggressive attitude towards kanade (i’ve seen people argue that because of hibiki bullying her at times, she deserves what kanade has put her through) and 2. hibiki’s ’puppet mode’ so to speak. it’s not too out of the realm of possibility via dissociative amnesia, though i feel like it wasn’t especially researched, i can see the analogy here. total control being stolen, hibiki being reduced to an unwitting puppet- you could make a point about how these kind of things can steal someone’s self worth and feeling of agency, but i don’t like the idea of hibiki being complicit in the crime with kanade.

there are a few things i respect about hibiki/kanade- that kanade isn’t romanticized and is shown as the monster she is, and that the other characters treat the situation with the proper gravity, even after they’re gone. in that, i like the way they were handled moreso than someone like korekiyo- many fans headcanon him as a victim, though it wasn’t especially portrayed that way, and he’s.. you know. a serial killer. someone who actively harms others, even as he was harmed. the cycle of abused becoming abusers is an important topic, but lord… not like that…

considering the abuse was revealed in a mask off moment by kanade and then they both die, the dynamics of their relationship/abuse in a normal situation is mostly left up to speculation. the portrayal of that would be something up to scrutiny, but we have limited bits of information to go off of.

tl;dr- i give kudos to this portrayal of incest and the damage it can do moreso than a lot of others i’ve seen that glorify or minimize clearly fucked up relationships, but it still has its flaws, weird bits in the writing, and isn’t fully fleshed out enough. people may be upset with how hopeless hibiki’s death was, as well. but as someone who isn’t a survivor, that’s only my thoughts to be taken with a grain of salt
