If I’m being honest, I have no idea how I got to this point. I always thought you were amazing, and really cool and attractive, but everybody thought of you that way! So I didn’t really think twice about it, but apparently, I should have way sooner than I did.

I should start from the beginning. At the beginning of the year, I had no idea I’d be friends with you. You were really quiet and reserved, and really cool, so I kind of knew there was no way that I’d be able to get myself to talk to you. But then the sports festival happened, where you declared war on me and told me everything, and everything kind of flipped onto its head, and then all of a sudden we were friends.

Not that I’m complaining! I’m really happy that we are, because otherwise, I wouldn’t have known how you really are. Compared to my first impression of you, I like this version of you better; you’re kind, and awkward, and still quiet, but you spend time with us when we ask. You like soba, and matcha candy, and green tea, and apparently strawberry yogurt drinks, and you like manga and training and you talk about your siblings and your mom with this really soft, warm look in your eyes. You’re good at sparring, and good at listening, and really bad at cooking in a way that just fits . Your hands are different temperatures, and you like to make fun of Kacchan, and I like your smile so much more than I thought I would.

I really like you, Todoroki-kun. I have for a while, I think—I realized a while ago, but I have no idea how long it was going on before that! The realization kind of just hit all at once. And now I’m at my desk with shaky hands, writing a love letter to my best friend because I’m too shy to tell you outright. It’s kind of crazy, isn’t it?

I thought that having a crush would be more nerve-wracking, because I’m a nervous person in general, and that’s what everyone feels—the whole blushing, and sweating, and feeling like your heart is racing, you know? But I don’t feel like that for you. Or, not as much as thought, at least—you actually make me feel more calm! More relaxed, and warm, like I could unravel and fall apart, and you’d be there to catch the pieces and put them back together. It’s nice, like I’m safe, and even when I do get nervous, it doesn’t feel bad, either. I trust you, and you never mind.

(Honestly, Uraraka-san looked like she was going to kill me when I finally realized. I think she knew the whole time…she’s been helping me the whole time, so I should probably thank her for everything. It’s because of her I’m telling you at all. I really didn’t want to tell you, since I know that you probably won’t feel the same way—I mean, I’m just your friend, and I’m honestly nothing special, so why would you? I get that I shouldn’t talk about myself like this, but it’s hard to think of it any other way, and I should probably be honest in a confession letter.)

It feels kind of weird, telling you, since I know that I’m your first friend, and you probably didn’t want this. But if this doesn’t ruin anything, and we can still be friends like we always have been, I know I’ll get over it eventually, and it’ll be fine. Unless you like me back, which would be—good. Really, really great, actually! If you do, then, would you mind going on a date with me? I have an idea that you might like, and after that, we could figure out how things’ll go. I’ve never done this before, and I know you haven’t either, so, we can do it together!

(But no matter what, I promise to be as good to you as I can! You’re my crush, and you’re also a precious friend of mine. I want you to be happy.)

But again, there’s no pressure. Just…tell me how you feel about all of this, okay? I’ll wait for your answer as long as you need me to.

Maybe it would be better if I told you out loud, but when I try to think of words, nothing ever comes to my mind—which is weird, since I’m better at talking to you than I am to anybody else. Anyway, I think letters are easier to write—I write them to my mother all the time, so maybe that’ll help me here, too.

When I first met you, I thought you were weird, and honestly didn’t think I’d ever pay attention to you like I do now. But I did. You made me pay attention, from the battle training to the USJ to the sports festival, and after that, I couldn’t stop. You became my friend—the first one I’ve ever had, actually. You became important to me.

But you’re something special, Midoriya, because it didn’t stop there like it did with everyone else.

I think I like you. Romantically. It wasn’t really something that happened all at once; it was more like it grew slowly as time went on, until at some point it got so overwhelming that I couldn’t brush it off anymore. I can’t imagine how I lived without you—honestly, maybe whatever I was doing before this year wasn’t really living. It would make sense, because if I were being honest, becoming friends with you felt like breathing for the first time.

I feel safe with you around, and warm, and happy. It’s like you’re the Sun. Nothing’s ever made me feel like this—it’s a good feeling. There’s a flutter in my chest when you laugh. I have to stop myself from steaming when you compliment my quirk and technique. Whenever I make you happy, even by accident, I feel like smiling, too.

Ashido says that this feeling is love, but I’m not sure. I think that no matter what this feeling is, I’m happy that I can experience it, especially for you. You’re amazing, Midoriya; you’re so good to each of us, and you’re there for me when I need you (and sometimes when I don’t, but want you anyway), and I trust you. And I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I’m glad to have you around anyway.

Uraraka says that you feel the same way, and I honestly hope that you do; you deserve to. Even if it’s not for me. If not, I don’t know what I’ll do, really, but I guess that if you want, we can put this behind us and still be friends. If you do feel the same way, then I’m not really sure what exactly to do after that; but we can figure it out together, right? Whatever works best. I do really want to take you on a date, though. A nice one.

I don’t know when you’ll see this, but tell me when you do, alright? By then, maybe I’ll be able to say it all to you properly.
