[ breathless ]: depends

the many meanings of hey [ BREATHLESS ]: having clearly just sprinted down to the receiver, the sender tries to catch their breath while greeting them.

jina hears the pounding footsteps long before the shout - thunderous and squeaky and its echoes bouncing around in the main hallway of snu's art building. her eyes narrow as she slowly comes to a halt, head whipping to her right in confusion. what's he even doing here? the fine arts buildings may technically be in the middle of campus, but it certainly doesn't neighbor the dental research center down near the main gate.

"hey!"

god, even his voice echoes down the hall. jina's eyes widen at the implication of a loud daniel - he's never really been one to be... publically rambunctious. she backtracks her steps to the last corner she turned, craning her head around just in time to catch him sliding down the vct floors.

"hey!"

his voice is much softer now, and jina can hear just how out of breath he is as she braces herself for the inevitable impact he creates by (gently) crashing into her. (he's always been a softie for her despite whatever he says.)

she wrinkles her nose, staring up at him with bewildered eyes. his grin is much too wide for the intrusion to be an emergency; jina visibly relaxes while bringing her hands to grip onto the sleeves of his sweater, shoulders dropping away from her ears, and a sigh of relief hissing out past her lips before she (gently) punches his chest with a balled-up fist. (she's a softie for him, too.)

the many meanings of 'hey' [ FAKE ]: alternatively, the sender (who has just been crying in private) hastily wipes away their tears and tries to greet the receiver casually (to varying degrees of success).

"hey."

soojung's voice is soft despite the audible clench of her jaw, single word spoken through gritted teeth. this wasn't exactly part of her meticulously scheduled plan today - two souls in the aftermath of an incredibly piss-poor cornering, exactly thirty-nine minutes from now - but she'd be remiss to not have halted in her tracks at the sound of what she could only describe as a child sobbing through a young woman's body. just gutteral tears and near-frantic sniffles echoing down the café building's narrow stairwell. god, humans were so emotional.

the girl - soojung assumes she's somewhere in her twenties; the face is cherubic, but both the metaphorical weight and the actual handbag on her shoulders suggest it's on the higher end of the spectrum - jolts her head up at the sound of soojung's voice. it's a little pitiful, her stance: crouched in the cramped corner of the stairwell, head heavy held up with trembling hands, body so folded over it looks like she just wants to disappear into the ether.

she's frantic: quivering fingers desperately trying to smear the tears off her face with multiple passes, shiny streaks left in its wake. the next motions are quick in succession but calculated in order, and if soojung hadn't been soojung, she might have missed them: the quick intake of air, the tiniest lift of her chest off her knees, the upwards twitch of her lips that are miles away from reaching her bleary eyes. quite professional, really. late-twenties indeed.

the crackly warble in the girl's voice shows her hand through her impromptu poker face though.

THE MANY MEANINGS OF "HEY.": A PROMPT LIST.

i often have these ideas that have no real origin, but i can actually tell you precisely why my brain wanted this: i was listening to "hey, soul sister" by train on a loop and i got thinking abt the fact that we really do just say "hey" for so many reasons. and i wanted to make that your thought of the evening! so happy november, bon appetit, wrap up warm, DO NOT ADD TO THIS LIST, and enjoy your writings!

[ GREETING ]: sender says "hey" as a greeting to the receiver.

[ ATTENTION ]: sender, having just noticed something strange or remarkable, calls for the receiver to get their attention.

[ REASSURE ]: in a bid to steady the unsettled receiver, the sender lightly says "hey" to help them calm down.

[ ANGER ]: the sender sharply snaps "hey" at the receiver, clearly angry about something the receiver has just done or had done in the past.

[ IDEA ]: having been presented with a predicament, the sender suddenly unravels a solution, introducing it to the receiver by saying "hey…".

[ GUILT ]: having just done something that they know the receiver won't be pleased with, the sender sheepishly greets them once they arrive to see the damage.

[ GOSSIP ]: the sender turns to face the receiver conspiratorially, clearly eager to share some new gossip with them.

[ URGENT ]: the sender rushes to the preoccupied receiver, desperately shouting "hey!" to get them to focus on a far more pressing matter.

[ SOOTHE ]: after finding the clearly distressed receiver, the sender pulls them into a careful embrace, gently murmuring "hey…" to try and soothe them.

[ SMILE ]: the sender (who hasn't been smiling up until they actually see the receiver in front of them) lights up with a smile as they greet the receiver.

[ TEARS ]: the sender greets the receiver while very clearly in tears.

[ FAKE ]: alternatively, the sender (who has just been crying in private) hastily wipes away their tears and tries to greet the receiver casually (to varying degrees of success).

[ WARNING ]: when the receiver begins to say things about subjects that are off-limits to the sender, the latter gives them a warning by saying "hey…".

[ LAUGH ]: having found the receiver to be decidedly unhappy, the sender lightly catches their attention before doing something to make them laugh, or at the very least, grin.

[ PROTEST ]: after the receiver does or says something that the sender deems to be unfair, the sender tries to exact justice by saying "hey!".

[ BREATHLESS ]: having clearly just sprinted down to the receiver, the sender tries to catch their breath while greeting them.

[ SAVE ]: after just saving the receiver's life in a very heroic fashion, the sender smoothly greets them while helping them escape.

[ FLIRT ]: the sender meets the receiver in a social setting, and attempts to flirt with them with the very traditional pick-up line: "hey.".

[ APOLOGY ]: the sender, having recently done something that hurt or upset the receiver, reunites with them and addresses the elephant in the room by greeting them with a sincerely apologetic tone.

[ AWKWARD ]: after a particularly rough first encounter, the sender meets the receiver again, and awkwardly greets them with more than a touch of embarrassment.

[ GENTLE ]: having found the receiver in an emotionally compromised position, the sender closes the door and approaches them carefully, gently saying "hey…" to try and get them to communicate what has upset them.

[ HARD ]: preparing to deliver what they both know will be bad news, the sender tries to prepare the receiver by quietly greeting them in a solemn tone.

[ WAKEN ]: walking into the receiver's bedroom, the sender gently shakes their shoulder to waken them, and whispers "hey." to encourage the process along.

[ WHISPER ]: the sender gently whispers "hey" to the receiver to discreetly get their attention without drawing the attention of others.

the apple is most commonly known for being associated with the forbidden fruit that eve eats in catholicism which casts her and adam out of heaven: original sin. however, apples are also symbolic to pagan fertility goddesses, the seeds of which are five and showcase a pentagram when cut horizontally. the apple in any case, represents wisdom and knowledge, independent desire and curiosity. you are someone who seeks to understand the world better. you believe in independent thought and asking questions which to some may be hard to answer. there's been times where you may have persecuted for being different from how others expect you to act, but have never let that stop you from speaking your mind and taking what you want. however, be wary of leaping into things you don't understand. knowledge is a wonderful, illuminating thing, but knowing too much can be a burden to some.

[ INITIATE ]:     a letter written to the recipient in order to maintain communication between the two while the writer is far away from them.

[ FAREWELL ]:     a letter written to say goodbye to the recipient, where the writer knows there’s an extremely high chance that they’ll never see each other again.

[ REVELATION ]:     a letter written that reveals the truth about an event(s) that the writer believes the recipient may be misinformed about.

[ EXPLAIN ]:     a letter that explains the reasoning behind choices that the writer has made in the past, which they would like to explain to the recipient.

[ BAD ]:     a letter that delivers bad news to the recipient.

[ UPDATE ]:     a letter that updates the recipient on the writer’s life, or certain on-going events that are happening in their life.

[ AFAR ]:     a letter delivered by the writer from another country/city/planet/etc in order to reassure the recipient and let them know they’re okay. (not intended to be a back-and-forth, like [ INITIATE ] does).

[ FRIDGE ]:     a letter attached to the fridge with magnets for the recipient to read in the kitchen.

[ KNOWN ]:     a letter which the writer left in a place that only the writer and recipient know of, knowing that only the recipient would be able to find it first.

[ HELP ]:     a letter written by the writer to the recipient, asking the recipient for help.

[ STOP ]:     a letter written for the recipient which the writer intends to be their final letter to them, and which ultimately concludes all communications between the writer and recipient from that moment forth.

[ PAST ]:     a letter which the writer wrote in the past, that reveals a piece of their backstory, that the reader finds and reads out of curiosity. (this could also be a letter written TO the receiver of the meme, or about them, or anything at all!)

the first time gets brushed off her shoulder as a small blip - a mistake in thinking it’s anything more. fall comes in with a crisp breeze that rustles through the slowly-changing maple leaves, the afternoon sun inching its way down to the horizon. san goes on and on about how his lunch barely carried him through the rest of the day, despite the fact that soojung watched him hork down not one but two meals (and part of her own). she crosses, goosebumps prickling across as another early autumnal wind wafts past.

“all i’m saying is they should really be putting more food on our plate if we’re paying two-fifty.”

“... your mom literally packed you an entire 반찬 feast today, you fatass.”

“야, 그걸로 될것 같냐? i’m a growing boy.”

“그래, 그래. 뭐, 맞는 말이네. 남자는 아니잖아.”

san lightly shoves her shoulder, holding his hand up to his chest with a scoff. soojung’s pissed demeanor doesn’t hold up long. she bursts into a fit of giggles when she looks up to see his exaggerated expression of pain, fingers swiping through her hair to clear the displaced locks off her face.

“야 좀 심하다. 남자로 안 보이냐.”

the sound of scuffs against the cracked concrete next to her abruptly stops, replaced with the faint, scraping rustle of fallen leaves. soojung whips her head around, a small inkling of worry scratching at her heels in fear that she actually may have hurt san’s feelings. his chest a mere few inches away, she

sweet dreams: are you happy?

happy.

‘happy’ finds no home in soojung’s life. oh, she knows of being happy, of course — even the nastiest of souls that come by speak highly of it — but it just doesn’t resonate with her... especially for the amount of time she’s spent in this lifetime. from what she’s picked up on from her assigned souls, being happy can mean a number of things:

that moment you see your child’s face for the first time (which soojung will never experience, nor does she really wish for);

finding relief in knowing you’ve actually studied and prepared well for your test upon receiving it (which soojung will never have to worry for);

holding hands with someone you love (hands? touching? soojung shudders at the mere thought);

having someone to spill your worries and qualms to, only for them to preciously wrap them up and pocket it away to keep your mind clear (she supposes she may have someone for that); or

living a calm and modest life rather than one of avidity and restlessness (someone she once knew mentioned that to her).

soojung doesn’t believe she’s felt happiness in years — decades, no, centuries, even. rather difficult to feel such a polar emotion when you’re in the business of death, even more so when you’re there because of a past of sins. 

the concept of ‘happy’ feels so foreign that when it tickles at her chest, she assumes something’s gone wrong. maybe she doesn’t deserve it. maybe she’s being greedy even wondering if she’s happy.

“hey, i brought some chicken.”

but maybe she can be greedy once in a while... right?
