NEW BLOG POST* I believe in transparency, relatability and teachable moments with kids. While I understand and grew up under the old school - mama era, things have changed. "Real" old school mamas are scarce. To me an old school mama is one big on tradition and respect. Heck, Ima mid 80s baby (84' to be exact) what can I say? I'm used to that "Stay out of grown folks business, do as I say, don't ask me why, shut your mouth, kids don't have a say" and so on... In my opinion, that rearing isn't as effective especially for (post millennial/digital age) kids. We need an understanding greater than because I said so (sometimes). You see, having an understanding supports better decision making and even the potential of factoring in consequences vs flat out rebellion (stemmed by curiosity). Understanding can help minimize that curiosity which minimizes trouble. Granted, I'm a new mom rearing my siblings. This provides a little wiggle room but I'm still their parent and they need guidance, structure, rewards and the understanding of risk. Like, we have real conversation! I break everything down to them. Luckily, our similarities encourages me to give it to them straight. I get it and understand what it's like to be exposed to stuff your eyes can't take back. “I don’t know what to say to them,” Rae cried. Girl, just say you miss and love them. Tell them about your new school and tell them you’re safe and much happier. I uttered “happier” just before realizing I shouldn’t have. My suppressive levee of pettiness occasionally breaks every now and then. And, I’m learning to be okay with it. I’m human with real feelings. Period. Point. Blank. Don’t side-eye me. I know what you’re thinking. “Happier” isn’t that bad or petty. Furthermore, it’s true. They are very happy. You’re probably also thinking: how can one be petty with kids. Right? Let me explain. Me adding happier most definitely came from a snarky place. Don’t get me wrong, my pettiness isn’t direct at them but at the circumstantial closeness of our relation. If I took in two random children things would feel different. I wouldn’t be bias or affected as much. So, petty Betty pops up every single time I’m reminded of my father. And, with the kids here (Zae specifically) I’m reminded daily. Xae said I looked very beautiful and to hold on to the rails if I walk down the stairs so I won't fall. He also reminded me to use sanitizer after touching it and to be safe that night.
