Accidents Happen
Aurora sat in the passenger seat as they drove over the Tappan Zee Bridge, watching Roberta run over any Z in their path
"She's crazy" Aurora laughed, looking over to Doc, who had an amused look as they watched Warren plow through the Z's. It hadn't lasted long before she watched the truck in front of her sputter to a stop in front of them. The three vehicles pulled over to the side of the road.
Aurora hopped out of the truck, making her way to the other side of the truck where it started smoking.
"Looks like you got a flat," Warren said, kicking the tire a couple of times.
"And some crazy smoke, but sure the flat." Aurora shrugged, moving to where her sister stood, leaning against the car.
"Heads up, look like we have some company" Mack spoke as they could hear the sound of motorcycle engines getting closer. Everyone reached for their weapons in case things had gone south. Aurora watched Cassandra hide behind the truck as the Motorcycles got closer. Aurora thought it was a weird reaction, but she could also understand the reaction; lone men were scary. The two men stared them down as they passed on their bikes.
"That's it, keep moving," Warren warned quietly. Doc moved to the back quickly, grabbing out what Aurora thought was a jack
"Alright, let's do this quick." Warren said, removing the lug nuts of the tire.
"It doesn't look flat" Addy said from where she stood. "Yeah but it won't turn" Warren countered.
"We ran over some fun stuff" Doc sighed
"Okay well, help me get it off and let's see what's going on." Warren asked, grabbing onto the wheel with Doc. As they removed the wheel growls filled the air, everyone taking a small step and making noises of disgust. The wheel whale had been filled with zombie guts and gross-looking, bloody zombies who were reaching out trying to eat the two closest to it.
"Well that explains the pull to the left" Doc joked as Warren shot him a look that could kill.
"What are you waiting for?! Kill it!" Murphy yelled, freaking out, and walked in the opposite direction of the truck.
"Alright, you, Time to go home." Warren frowned, shoving the bar in her hands into the zombie's head, then dropping back on the ground.
"That's disgusting," Aurora said, shaking her body out as she moved towards Cassandra, offering her the water bottle that Aurora held in her hands. Cassandra had gratefully taken a drink and handed it back. Cassandra was a very pretty girl with long raven hair and beautiful tawny skin. She and Aurora stood about the same height, and her beautiful brown eyes shone in the sun. Addy grabbed Aurora's hand, dragging her to where the rest of the group stood overlooking the city. Aurora's eyes stayed on Cassandra for a moment longer before letting her sister drag her along
"Even after all this, this is still beautiful," Warren Said in admiration. Addy held her camcorder up, recording the cityscape and the group. Aurora had to agree that no matter how many times she saw the city, she always thought it was beautiful. Wondered what lives were taking place inside the buildings of the city, now the city was just mindless zombies.
"Take a good look, we probably won't be back for a while" Garnett frowned
"So long, New York." Addy said, sadness lacing her tone
"Is it weird to be sad over a city?" Aurora asked, squeezing Addy's hand. Aurora had never left the city besides the one family trip to Chicago to see a musical, which Aurora more or less slept through.
"See ya in the next life," Murphy said, annoyed at the whole thing.
"I don't think it's sad to be leaving your home," Cassandra smiled, moving to stand next to the blonde girl. Aurora gave her a grateful smile. The girl was right, it wasn't about the city itself, it was about everything else, with all the memories with her siblings, her parents, and her friends, most of them were dead now.
"Okay, load up" Garnett said, ending the sad moment. Everyone made their way to their respective trucks. With Warren and Garnett's truck having died– kicking Aurora out of the passenger seat– so she moved to the bed of the truck
"Hey" Aurora smiled as she climbed into the bed. The boy that she still hadn't learned the name of.
"Hi" The boy said quietly, shyly looking down at his gun like it was the coolest thing to see
"I'm Aurora, by the way" She smiled sitting down on the side of the truck
"10K" he said quickly, his eyes flicking up to her, then immediately away
"Like that's your name?" Aurora said, shooting him a confused look. The boy just nodded picking his gun back up to look through the scope as they started driving down the road
"What kinda name is that?" Aurora spoke again
"What kinda name is Aurora?" 10K asked, looking down the barrel of his gun
"A normal one" The girl mumbled, grabbing out her Walkman and putting her headphones on. Aurora had wondered who would name their kid or even themselves 10 Thousand. It seemed stupid. Though who was she to judge? Aurora's mother had named her after a Disney princess because she had little blonde hair. Aurora put her Abba cassette in, leaning her head against the side of the truck, hoping to get some sleep before she couldn't anymore
Aurora jolted awake when she felt a hand on her shoulder, her eyes searching for the person who touched calming down a bit when she saw it had just been 10k.
"S-sorry we stopped" He said, putting his hands up in defens.e "We need gas" The boy gave a flat lipped smile and jumped off the bed of the truck.
"How was your nap, sleepyhead?" Addy smiled, helping her sister down from the truck. Aurora rolled her eyes, shrugging her shoulders. Addison just laughed, pulling her sister towards some cars to find some gas. It didn't take long for the two to go in different directions. Aurora had been searching a dark blue Kia's trunk for a new shirt; her current one had originally been a light gray but now looked dark gray and had holes in the bottom of it. Aurora heard the growls before she saw the Z reaching for her, too occupied in looking at a Dark blue t-shirt. The blonde girl started looking around for where the growling was coming from, but she hadn't been able to see it. She figured the Z had been trapped, so she went on, not caring about it. When she reached for a t-shirt at the back of the van, the growls got louder and a hand grabbed her wrist. Aurora let out a scream in alarm as it pulled her further down towards its teeth. To keep herself up from the zombie's teeth, she had her other arm out holding her up, which made it impossible for her to get to her sword.
"Help!" Aurora screamed out, not seeing anyone around her. She prayed she hadn't wandered too far away from Addy and Mack, but based on the lack of help, she assumed she had.
"I got you!" Cassandra yelled, squeezing in next to her. The raven-haired girl stabbed the zombie's head, causing the zombie to drop her hand. Aurora let out a breath of relief, backing away from the trunk as if that would keep her safer. "Thank you."
"Anytime, that was a close one." Cassandra gave the girl a reassuring smile, searching her exposed arms for bites. Being satisfied in her search that nothing had happened to the girl, she met Aurora's eyes. "Glad you're okay."
"We should get back to the group" Aurora smiled, moving past the girl towards where their group had stood in a circle. Aurora nodded towards her siste,r who had her camcorder out and was videoing the piles of wrecked cars.
"Where did everybody go?" Warren questioned, walking up to Charlie. Aurora hadn't originally noticed the lack of people, but Warren was right, there were only a couple of zs left and zero living people besides the one she was with. "I haven't seen a survivor except for those two bikers."
"Black summer, everyone starved to death." Garnette stated, fidgeting with a trinket he had found.
"I was in philly for black summer." Cassandra had focused on tying the bag in her hands, sadness evident in her voice. "It was bad. I lost 30 pounds, thought I was dead." Aurora tried to forget black summer as best as she could. It was the darkest time for all survivors when all the food ran out, and people got meaner and more scared than before.
"How did you survive?" Addy questioned. The whole group was looking to Cassandra for her answer.
"I did what I had to." Cassandra shrugged, her voice clipped in indication she didn't want to elaborate.
"Whoa Whoa whoa whoa whoa" Murphy screamed as a door opened from a car no one had bothered to check. The man put his hands up in fear, trying to show he wasn't a threat.
"Hold on, It's not a Z." Warren warned, holding her gun up to the guy. "Peace!" the man cried out. Aurora could feel Cassandra tensing beside her, but figured it was her tensing because she was scared of a stranger.
"No bites here 100% Alive" He reasoned
"What happened to your friend?" Garnett asked, feeling skeptical of the man. Aurora wasn't sure if it was just her, but she didn't feel right about the man; it had felt nothing like when Cassandra or 10K joined them, it just felt off.
"Turns out he had other friends of low morals, took my ride. Horse thieves should be shot." He explained getting a pat down from Warren to make sure he didn't have any weapons on him.
"You should choose better friends." Cassandra spoke from beside Aurora
"That's Good...advice" The man looked shocked when he saw it was Cassandra who was speaking. It seemed Aurora was the only one who noticed this, looking back and forth between the two people like she was looking for the context of the weirdness that would jump out at her.
"What can we do for you? One peaceful group of humans to a lone traveler?" Warren asked with a warning underlying her tone.
"Could use a lift?" The man asked, "Sure don't want to spend the night out here alone."
"Sorry, we ain't runnin a taxi service." Murphy jumped in from where he stood behind Warren as if she were his bodyguard.
"Which way are you headed?" Garnette asked the man
"Any direction but back" the Man stated, frowning. "Word is there's a horde on the move south, on the New York side. I see you're scrounging for gas. You know, like we used to say, ass, gas, or grass." The man smiled at his joke "Nobody rides for free. I know where you could fill up."
"Now would be the time for you to share this information" Garnette demanded.
"Place called Jersey Devil Refinery, maybe five miles off,Just off the turnpike" He explained
"How do you know there's gas there?" Warren asked, her gun still pointed at the man's head.
"Got overrun day number one. All the tanks are still full, just rusting away." He shrugged, hands still raised in the air. It was silent for a moment as the group thought about what this stranger said.
"Alright take us to this refinery and if there's gas there like you say, you can ride with us to the next outpost." Garnette offered.
"You won't be sorry," he smiled, reaching down for the bag at his feet. The rest of the group raised their guns at the man, making sure he didn't try anything. "You got that right," Warren nodded, grabbing his bag before he could.
As the group stood outside looking at the refinery in front of them, a loud banging sound filled Aurora's ears. Zombies milled around, walking up the stairs towards the sound, trying to find food.
Aurora looked at her sister in disbelief. There was no way they would get gas from here without someone dying.
'Hey, you know about this?" Warren's voice cut through Aurora's thoughts.
"Hey, all the easy gas is gone." The man just shrugged.
"So what's the brilliant plan?" Murphy asked, "Die, get eaten, go home early?" the man asked, earning a glare from Aurora
"What's that smell?" Addy asked, looking around.
"The undead and gasoline, so no firearms." Garnett spoke, earning a groan from the boy in the bed of the truck.
"How do you want to handle this?" Warren asked, looking to Garnett.
"We first got to shut off whatever's making that noise." Charlie spoke
"Okay. It's probably some kind of pump. But where?" Warren asked.
"Follow the zombies" Garnett spoke as if it were the most obvious answer in the world.
"They all seam to be headed to the top of the cat walk" Mack Added
"Thanks, genius." Aurora rolled her eyes, watching the Zs wander up to the top.
"We'll get up there and check it out," Addy smiled, looking at Mack.
"We got to have a sound that draws the Zs away from the pump, so we can get the gas," Charlie spoke, nodding to the top of the catwalk.
"Sorry, I left my guitar back at Camp Blue Sky," Doc joked, causing Aurora to cackle out loud before covering her mouth with her hand.
"Car Horns?" Addy suggested
"No, they'll all just head this way."
"Yeah, and so will every dead around." Warren sighed.
Cassandra piped up, "I have something, Zs liked high-pitched sounds. The more musical the better." The girl spoke, holding up a music box, gaining the attention of the nearby zombies. Aurora's eyes nearly popped out of her head. "Wow." The girl mumbled under her breath.
"That's great! You're our decoy." Garnett said, pointing towards the girl.
"I'll go with her." Aurora smiled, raising her hand slightly. Charlie nodded at the girls, "I'll go with them." The new guy spoke from behind the girls, causing Aurora's stomach to knot.
"We don't need his help!" Cassandra spoke quickly
"No, you guys need more cover. Take him," Charlie spoke his heart in the right place. "Start the music when you get to the top of the cat walk" he spoke, pointing at the catwalk next to the one the noise was coming.
Cassandra grabbed Aurora's hand, forcing her to run ahead of the boy named Travis. Travis menacingly walked behind them, Aurora glancing at Cassandra, worry evident in the other girl's face. The Girls had been a good distance when Aurora finally spoke.
"Why are we running?" The blonde asked as she ran, Cassandra gripping her hand like a lifeline. Though the girl didn't give Rory an answer, she trusted her enough to keep running with her.
"Sunshine!" Travis called from behind the girl. Aurora gave Cass a look of confusion, the latter girl shaking her head as they continued to run up the stairs.
"You're gonna get us all killed" the man yelled as they rounded the corner.
"Actually just you!" Cassandra yelled back pulling Aurora along and around through the zombies.
"I know what you're trying to do! Its not going to work!"
"You dont know anything about me!"
"I know Tobias," Travis called after them. Aurora whipped her head to the side to see a look of horror on Cassandra's face as their eyes met. "The rest of the family is never gonna let you leave, sunshin.e" The grip on Aurora's hand tightened every time Travis called her sunshine, and though Aurora didn't understand it, she also knew that Cass was far more trustworthy than that boy was.
"Im never going back! And my name isn't sunshine! It's cassandra!" She screamed as the girls jumped over pipes and swerved around zombies. "That girl died a long time ago."
"Sunshine?" Aurora mumbled to herself, the name rolling around in her head.
"You dont understand! I can't go back without you." he spoke much calmer as they climbed another set of stairs. As they ducked around a zombie, Cassandra stopped above it, kicking it down at the boy, before pulling Aurora up the stairs again. Aurora had to admit she hoped the man would die soon because she wanted nothing more than to stop running upstairs.
The girls made it to the megaphone at the top of the catwalk walk Cassandra holding up her music box to distract the Zs
"Who is that? What is he talking about?!?!" Aurora spoke in a hushed panic, grabbing onto the other girl's arm.
"This is great, your friends tank up, and we steal it from them." Travis said as he walked in front of the girls. This statement made Aurora's blood boil, if she had anything to say about it– and she did– Aurora would kill him– and Cassandra– before she let that happen.
"There is no we! I'm not going back." Cassandra grabbed Aurora's arm, squeezing it lightly. "Not alive." the raven-haired girl added.
"Why do you keep fighting this?" the man questioned getting closer to the girls "We can even bring your friend along" Travis said gesturing to Aurora. The blonde grimaced and though she didn't mean to she took a small step behind Cassandra as if the girl could protect Aurora.
"I will do whatever I have to do!" Cassandra spoke angrily
"You'll do what?!" Travis grabbed the back of Cassandra's hair. "tell your new friends who I am?" the boy asked. "What happens when I tell them who you are?" he asked, gripping her hair tighter. Aurora had enough, grabbing her pistol that she rarely used, pointing it at the man.
"Let her go!" Aurora screamed at him. The boy just laughed, putting his hands up in a surrender as the sound of zombies grew louder. The three snapped their attention to the noises. Aurora took this as an opportunity, grabbing Cassandra's hand and bolting in the opposite direction of the boy. There wasn't a good option on where to go as Travis had been blocking the way back down, so the girls ran in a lost pattern. Cassandra pulled them down a path that looked like it led down, but only led to a dead end. Worry overtook Aurora, her anxiety balling in a pit in her stomach, making her want to vomit. She didn't want to die because of this man or go wherever this family he spoke of was. Aurora wished for a second that she had gone with her sister.
"Get out of our way Travis" Aurora said, worry in her voice. "I don't want to have to kill you!" Cassandra added. The girls hung onto the side of the path as Travis pulled out a taser, switching it on. Aurora's eyes widened as she looked at Cassandra,  who just shook her head.
"It's time to go home, Sunshine." Travis spoke, the way he said it almost made him sound like a worried older brother just wanting what was best for his sister. Though Aurora knew that whatever he wanted from Cassandra, it was not because he was worried. He stepped closer to the girls, grabbing Cass by the shoulders shoving her up against the side of the railing. Aurora screamed, trying to pull him off, but he shoved her aside, landing a nice blow to the side of her face, pushing her into the opposite railing. He clicked the taser on, shoving it into Cassandra's neck. Aurora let out a strangled cry, pleading with him to stop as she reached for her sword.
"You forget. I'm used to it." Cassandra spoke, kneeing the boy in the crotch. Travis doubled over in pain, backing up towards the edge. Aurora had stood up, moving towards her friend, as they looked at each other before looking back at the boy, raising their legs and pushing the man over the side. He screamed as he fell, splattering on the ground, zombies immediately eating him. Aurora watched as Cassandra dropped her music box on the boy, the musical sound attracting more Zs to him.
"Are you okay?" Aurora turned to the girl who stood there with a blank stare on her face.
"I'm sorry." Cassandra spoke, a tear falling down her face. Aurora shook her head, pulling the girl in for a hug. Aurora thought the girl smelled of gun powder, dirt, and a hint of cinnamon. "Don't be." Aurora muttered, pulling away from the girl.
As the girls made their way back to the group, Aurora pulled Cassandra along faster towards what Aurora always thought of as safety. A small smile on the blondes face despite the events of the day.
"What the hell was that explosion?" Aurora asked, running up to the group, noting Murphy panting on the ground. Mack sighed, pointing to the man shaking his head quietly, holding onto Addy's hand.
"So did we get the gas?" Murphy asked as everyone sighed disappointedly. "Who screwed that up?" he asked, earning a look from everyone
"You can't be serious." Aurora mumbled to herself.
"Oh, sorry..." the man said disappointedly.
"So, where's your friend?" Warren asked, walking towards the girls to check over Aurora for any signs of injury.
"He didn't make it. And he wasn't my friend." Cassandra spoke pointedly
The pay phone that had been attached to the wall started ringing, interrupting whatever conversations had been going on. Aurora looked up, confused, tilting her to the side a little as she looked at the phone. Aurora hadn't heard a phone ring in nearly three years, and she had to admit it was kind of an annoying sound. Garnett moved to answer it, speaking to whoever was on the other end.
"What happened to the man?" Warren asked the blonde girl. Aurora just shrugged, "Shit happens sometimes." she spoke moving to stand with her sister.
It hadn't taken long for Addy to notice the nice bruise forming on her sister's face. Addy reached up, grabbing the girl's chin and turning Aurora's face to the side to get a better look at the bruise.
"What the hell happened?" Addy asked panic evident in her voice "I told you shit happens sometimes" The blonde shrugged again, Addy didn't like this answer and kept pressing for more answers but Aurora wouldn't really answer them.
"Puppies and Kittens!" Warren yelled. Aurora grabbed the sword strapped to her back, moving to mercy a couple of the faster Zs. Aurora jumped into the back of the truck, watching Addy's Z whacker fly threw the air and mercy a Z.
"I'd pay money to see that again" Aurora laughed, speaking to no one in particular. Aurora sat in the back of the truck, leaning her head against the truck. Cassandra sat down beside the girl a smile on her face.
"Hey Cassie," Rory smiled, pulling out her Walkman. Cassandra grinned, leaning her head against the truck.
"Excuse ma'am" The boy spoke to Cassandra. "You have a finger in your hair." He said, giving another flat-lipped smile. Aurora laughed as Cassandra picked the finger out of her hair and threw it out of the truck. The raven-haired girl glared at Aurora before laying her head on the girl's shoulder.

ORDERS
"Hey, are you coming with us?" Addison asked, crouching down beside Aurora to be more level with the girl who sat on the porch, her legs swinging back and forth. The blonde girl looked over to her sister, nodding. Even though the two were sisters they thought they couldn't look more different to each other, Aurora with her blonde hair and heart-shaped face and Addison with her long red hair and oval face shape but, others always noticed how similar they looked; their eyes were both a greenish blue, they were almost the same height, and they had quite a few of the same mannerisms.
"Amazing, we're gonna head out now." Addison smiled, standing up, offering her hand to the girl
"Thanks," Aurora stood up, dusting her pants off, grabbing her sword and bag, and following her sister down the path.
The girls made their way to the front gate, where Doc and Mack waited for them. Doc had been searching through his bag, pulling out a little baggie, his face lighting up as he saw the two girls walking over.
"Took ya long enough" Mack joked, rolling his eyes as he watched the two girls get closer.
"Sorry, I had to work up the courage to see your ugly face" Aurora scoffed, causing Doc to burst out laughing. an offended look landing on macks face.
"Be nice." Addy warned, linking her hand with Mack's. Aurora rolled her eyes, opening the gate. The two girls had met Mack on day one, and since then, he and Addy had been immediately infatuated with each other. It hadn't taken long for them to start dating, and Aurora had been disgusted with the whole thing. Aurora had once overheard Mack say it was only jealousy that Addy had found someone and Aurora didn’t, which only made the girl more annoyed at the two. Aurora completely disagreed with the statement and was just disgusted because once the couple knew they were safe and could let their guards down, they were all over each other, and no little sister wanted to see that.
"I hope they have bullets, I'm almost out." Doc spoke from beside Aurora, helping the blonde close the gate behind them.
" I hope they found more cassette tapes," Aurora grinned, grabbing out the Walkman she kept in her bag. The last time they met up with Sketchy and Skeezy, who happened to collect random things for trade, she traded 12 bullets that she rarely used for it. Addy said it was the stupidest trade that could have been made, but Aurora heavily disagreed with her sister.
After about an hour of walking and one random zombie group, the 4 stumbled upon the trading shop-or their car with bars on the window and their trunk hatch open. Skeezy stood behind a collapsible table that had random baggies, weapons, and other things spread across it. While his partner Sketchy stood at the back of their trucks with more guns and random things spread across the back.
"We were getting worried thinking maybe you ran into trouble." Sketchy spoke in an uncaring tone, he was a taller man with a salt and pepper looking beard and short curly hair to match it.
"Nope, someone's just slow." Aurora spoke, glancing at Mack, who threw his hands up like he was gonna say something, only to be stopped by Addy. Doc pulled Aurora over to the table Skeezy stood at. Skeezy was a tall, slender man who had more of a buzz cut than hair and looked like someone you would cross the street to avoid. The two rummaged through things as Skeezy talked about nonsense, trying to upscale things more than anyone would logically be willing to give for.
"How about a straight across trade?" Doc asked, grabbing out a bottle of Aspirin, "A Dozen of these aspirin for a dozen of these reloaded .223s."
"You can't kill a zombie with a bottle of aspirin." Skeezy gestured to the aspirin "Well, you can't Kill a fever with a bullet, and they ain't making any more bottles of aspirin," Doc spoke matter-a-factly. Aurora shook the bottle of pills in her hand for emphasis.
"Make it a dozen OxyContin and you got a deal." the man said, causing Doc and Aurora to scoff
"I'd have to take a dozen OxyContin before I make that deal," Doc said, grabbing his aspirin and shoving it back in his bag.
"How about some meth? Do you want any crystal?" Doc said, perking up, catching the other man's interest, and officially losing Aurora's.
Aurora made her way to her sister and the new spiked bat she had in her hands. Rory reached for the bat, grabbing it from her sister. The blonde inspected the bat in her hands with admiration, a small smile on her face. The blonde immediately handed it back as they heard distant growling.
"Behind you" Mack warned, causing Addy to spin around, whacking the Z in the head. The Z hit the ground with a thud.
"Nice, You alright? That was a little close." Mack walked over to Addy, quickly scanning her for bites. Aurora followed quickly behind him.
"Yeah, that-that was a fast one." Addy spoke, her eyes soft as she looked up at Mack. "Brutal." the redhead smiled before turning back to sketchy, who had a knowing smile across his face.
"Told ya." The man's smile turned into more of a smirk.
"Hey isn't that Red Hanson?" the man asked. Aurora took a step closer to inspect him, nodding her head in agreement.
"Z's got red? Damn, he was our best customer." he sighed. "Tough as bullets, I wonder if his brothers know" the man said as loud growls were heard
"Yeah I think so, cause here they come" Sketchy screeched, everyone reaching for their guns.
Aurora reached up, grabbing the sword from where it sat in its sheath against her back. Mack shot the first one, stepping aside so Addy could use her new spiked bat to take out the other one, missing him when Mack jumped in, shooting the zombie's head. The last brother surprised Mack, attacking him before Sketchy and Skeezy took the man out. Aurora sighed in relief, sheathing her sword in its place again.
"Closing time" the two tradesmen spoke, shutting down everything, putting everything away, and safely packing it in their car. The four left stood making sure all of their stuff was safely packed in their bag, Addison pulling out her camcorder. Addison's need to document everything annoyed Aurora to no end, but there wasn’t much she could do about it, so she chose to ignore it.
"the way that big one moved, he must of turned just a few hours ago" Doc said as Addy filmed their surroundings
"Four brothers recently turned on Millers road by Sutters farm. Given Mercy, May 13th, 3 A.Z" Addy spoke a sadness evident in her voice
"Time to go" Mack came up behind the redhead, giving her a comforting pat. The four made their way back down the road towards their camp. Aurora, Addy, and Mack met Doc 10 days after they first made it to Camp Blue Sky and took an immediate liking to each other. Aurora immediately liked Doc after he made a joke about being too sober, and after Rory was the only one who laughed at the joke Doc immediately liked her. The others soon joined in, seeing why Doc was so funny. Aurora and Mack, unfortunately, had gotten off to a much rougher start. Aurora thought he was a little too egotistical and mentioned hockey a little too much for the end of the world for her.
"Too bad they didn't have any cassettes on them." Aurora sighed, bumping into Addy, who just laughed and wrapped her arm around the blonde's shoulder. The four stopped when they saw smoke and heard gunshots, the group exchanged worried looks before taking off closer to camp. Doc pulled out the radio from his bag, trying to call for anyone. Aurora prayed for an answer from anyone; she hoped no, she knew they couldn’t all be dead. The small group waited for a response
"Hey, Doc, it's Garnett. What's going on?" A voice carried over the radio, a sigh of relief washing over everyone's faces.
"Garnett, thank God you're alive." Doc spoke as the group around him let out a breath of relief.
"We thought everyone was dead."
"I'm not at Camp Blue Sky. What's happening?" The words had barely come through between static and crackling. Doc smacked the radio against his hands a couple of times to try and knock the radio back into sense, but it still crackled.
"The batteries are dying." Doc spoke more to the 3 around him than to Garnett, causing the other three to groan. Aurora dropped her head onto Addy’s shoulder, a lump forming in her throat from anxiety.
BOOM
The four too occupied in the conversation on the walkie talkie to notice what had been happening at Camp Blue Sky, jumped back everyone looking up to the explosion that went through camp blue sky Aurora immediately reached for Addys hand squeezing it. Aurora had never been a fan of loud noises and the apocalypse had not been a place to get away from it.
"Blue Sky has been overrun, the whole place is on fire!" Doc informed Garnett, his voice a little uneven
"Survivors?" Garnett questioned
"Well, there was a ton of gunfire a while ago, but nothing since." the older man spoke as the radio started crackling again.
"Let's go." Doc called as he ran closer to the camp; the other three were hot on his trail. The group of four ran through the trees, trying to find any survivors, running until they stumbled to the edge of the tree line.
"Hey, there's the escape bus!" Addy screamed happily as they all stopped in their tracks, watching the school bus of survivors drive by, kids sticking their faces out the windows."Oh! they got the kids out." Addy smiled as a zombie poked his head out of the end of the bus. Addy and Aurora looked at each other, horrified, as the group took off after the bus, watching it crash into a tree, smoke rising from the crushed engine.
The back door swung open, a line of Zs falling out the back door. Addy, Mack, Doc, and Aurora backed up, running in the opposite direction as fast as they could as zombie kids and adults chased them. The group ran up a hill as fast as they could, only to run into a tinier group of Zs. They stopped in their tracks with horror on all of their faces, the thought of this being the end racing through all their heads.
"Get in!" Garnette yelled, running over the zombies in front of them, the back door swinging open to a man they had never seen before. The Carvers and Mack ran to the bed of the truck while Doc got in the backseat with the unrecognisable man. " GO, GO, GO!" Mack yelled once the three were safely in the back. Aurora laid her head against the back of the truck, a huge sigh leaving her lips. Mack and Addy mimicked the girl's actions.
It wasn’t long before the truck pulled into an abandoned high school, fences, damaged vehicles, and tore down siding everywhere. Hammond made his way out of the truck, hoping to find his guys but if anyone was here, they were definitely dead.
"Is it him?" Murphy called out of the back seat. Hammond nodded, shooting the Z he stood in front of in the head.
"Don't go far," Warren said as the group climbed out of the truck "Don't worry," Murphy rolled his eyes, unzipping his pants and peeing on the tire. "This guy." Warren scoffed
"My reinforcements are dead, we need to make a quick search for survivors and any supplies." Hammond ordered. "You! Zip it up and stay close to me." Hammond yelled to Murphy, who looked at him in disbelief.
"Hey, where'd all the Z's go?" Addy asked from where she stood
"Movin' on, like locusts." Doc said, causing Aurora to send him a confused look, the older man just laughing her confusion off.
"yeah but they'll be back. Garnett, Warren, you clear the building. Hey! you four check the vehicles." Hammond ordered again, earning himself a couple of looks of disbelief. Everyone headed off in their directions.
The small group of four headed towards a pile of rubble and clutter, looking to see if they could find anything. Aurora bent down, holding up a loose arm only to drop it just as fast. Aurora's head snapped up to a group of zombies growling. Addy's eyes moved to where her sister was looking to see a cage with a horde of zombies trying to get in to eat whatever was in it.
"What are they after?" Addy asked, running toward the cage. "only one thing" Mack spoke from behind her. Doc and Aurora ran after them, the four grabbing out their melee weapons, mercying the Zs that surrounded the metal cage.
"Is that a girl?" Aurora asked, confused as the zombies fell, looking at the three around her in disbelief. Who would lock up a poor girl? Why would they lock up a girl?
"Hey! Hey!" Mack called, banging on the cage to get the girl's attention. "Are you alright?"He asked, moving to open the door.
"Careful, she might be dead." Addi warned as Mack entered the structure, kneeling in front of the girl. Once Mack touched the girl, she shot up, shoving Mack against the wall, a knife against his throat.
"Whoa, Whoa! Hey, Hey, Hey!" Addy screamed, trying to get the girl's attention
" Well she ain't dead." Doc and Aurora laughed high high-fiving each other. The blonde girl sheathed her sword, no longer seeing any danger or anything to worry about. Addy sent them both a warning look, causing the pair to look anywhere but the redhead's eyes.
"Hey, Hey, it's okay. We're good people. We just saved you." She tried to bargain, shoving her hand through the bars. " Okay, don't hurt him!" She pleaded. The girl threatening Mack lowered her knife, stepping away from the blonde boy, pain etched into her face.
"Sorry. I didn't know where I was." The girl spoke softly. "I must have fallen asleep."
"Asleep?" Doc questioned, "How long have you been in this cage?"
"Two Days." The girl sighed, rubbing her head. Aurora shot her sister a worried look at the girl's words.
The group made their way inside the school, seeing Garnett holding a crying baby. Aurora shot her sister a confused look. Addy just shook her head, finding a stool to sit on where the rest followed.
"Somebody better shut that kid up before he attracts Z's like flies." Murphy stood up from his seat, complaining.
"Hey, it's a baby. He makes noise, okay?" Garnett spoke with annoyance, lacing his tone.
"Shut up." Hammond spoke to Murphy, " And you do what you can. He's right about the Z's." Hammond grabbed the water off the table, handing it to Casandra. "Here."
The girl gratefully took it, sipping as much as she could before the man ripped it out of her hands, tossing it over to Addy.
"Why would somebody lock you in a cage and leave you to die?" He questioned the girl, "What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything. I locked myself in the cage for protection." The raven-haired girl spoke, defending herself.
"You have the keys?" Hammond asked acquisitory "I Lost them." Cassandra spoke. Hammond shot her a disapproving look
"Why are you dressed like that?" Warren asked from across the room
"I don't have to justify myself to you." Cassandra said defensively
"Maybe you do!" Hammond yelled, bending down to be in her face
"No, she doesn't!" Aurora yelled, leaning down to be in Hammond's face. Hammond shot her a glare as Addy stood up, moving to stand beside her sister in case she had to jump in to protect her.
"We were supposed to meet the men in those trucks." The Man yelled in Aurora's face, "What happened here?" He asked angrily, looking down at Cassandra.
"Those men showed up about a week ago. They cleared out the school and set up a camp. But word got out that there was food. Lots of it in a bomb shelter. yeah it didn't take long, there were too many people. So the soldiers shot some of the locals and that brought the Z's. You can guess the rest." Cassandra explained. Addy pulled Aurora back to her seat as they listened.
"What are we waiting for? Give her the baby, and let's go!" Murphy interrupted
"You can't just give this girl a baby and leave them." Garnett argued back
"Well, they can't come with us." Murphy shot back "Listen-"
"No way am I leaving the baby and her behind. It is not gonna happen" Garnett yelled to Hammond
"It's just a baby." Murphy rolled his eyes. "It's not like he's gonna grow up to be a fine young man."
"You know what? Shut up!" Hammond interrupted, pushing Murphy away from Garnett
"This is ridiculous." Aurora grumbled from her seat
"We'll take them to the next safe, outpost" He offered. "God, I hate moral dilemmas."
"Yeah, what's next, chief! you gonna start a college fund for him." Murphy rolled his eyes "Puppies and kittens. 200 yards away." Warren yelled, interrupting the squabble. The rest of the group stood up, Hammond and Cassandra giving them a confused look
"Zombies"
"Alright, everybody. Time to go! I want you five to gather all the food and weapons you can find." The man spoke, "Load them in the truck the keys are still insi-"
"Hey! we haven't talked about this" Mack interrupted
"Hey, we can talk about this later. Right now, you do what I tell you." Hammond said, raising his voice
"Garnett! You stay with the baby and Murphy till we get back." Hammond kept talking or ordering, but Aurora had heard enough. Looking around the room, and all the piles of garbage
"Go!" Hammond yelled, snapping Aurora back to reality as everyone looked to Charlie, who nodded his head, "Do it." Garnett spoke, and everyone nodded, heading out the door.
Aurora and Addy had been searching a Z's pockets for anything cool
"This is so lame." Aurora sighed almost as if to jinx the peace. A zombie lunged at Doc as he twisted around, trying to stay away from his jaw, which made it very difficult to get a clear shot at the dead soldier. Doc continued screaming as everyone circled with him, trying to kill the Z until a moment later when the Z had a big gaping hole in its head and dropped to the ground. The group looked up to the roof, where it appeared the projectile that killed the Z came from. All that they saw was what appeared to be a man running across the roof.
"thank God for snipers." Aurora laughed, moving to check Doc for bites.
"I'm good," Doc shrugged her off, fixing his vest and stroking his beard. The Man patted the girl on the shoulder before moving to search more z's Aurora gave up searching Z's as she had deemed it too boring and instead moved to vehicles. She opened up the glove box of an old van that had crashed into a fence. The blonde rummaged around the glove box, throwing the papers into the back seat before her hands found what felt to be a cassette. She pulled it out, reading the label, which read Van Halen. Aurora grabbed her bag to look at the three she already had were Elvis, one full of 80's love songs, and Abba.
"Score!" Aurora smiled to herself, tucking the cassettes back into her bag, and hopped out of the truck as she saw her sister walking towards the door of the school. Aurora got there in time to see Hammond with his gun pointed at Garnett's head and Murphy pinned to the wall. The girl reaches up for the sword sheathed at her back just in case. After a few moments, Garnett released Murphy and backed away from the two men.
"Let's get in the trucks," Hammond said. "We're moving out." Aurora grabbed Addy's hand to calm her anxiety after all the fighting.
"WHat about the baby- thing?" Warren asked, gesturing to the door. "We can't leave it like that."
"Yeah she's right even if it is turned." Mack frowned
"It sounds so sad," Addy said softly, squeezing her sister's hand in comfort. Aurora rubbed her thumb up and down Addy's hand to comfort her.
"It's not sad! It's a zombie." Doc interjected, "Amen brother. Let's go." Murphy agreed.
"We can't leave it like that!" Warren yelled
"I'll do it." Garnett nodded his head, trying to prepare himself for what was about to happen.
"I'll do it" Hammond said, stopping Garnett. "I need you to pull it together." Hammond spoke, grabbing the man's arm
Hammond walked into the school, leaving the group waiting for him to kill the Z baby so they could leave. Aurora let go of Addy's hand and grabbed her bag.
"Look what I found!" Aurora smiled, grabbing her Van Halen cassette and handing it to Addy. The older sister laughed, taking it from Aurora to inspect it.
"Have you listened to it yet?" Addy asked. Aurora shook her head, putting the cassette back in her bag.
"You know if we wanted to take the truck and run, now would be the time." Doc said offhandedly, causing Aurora to laugh. "Just sayin', " Doc shrugged his shoulders
That's when the group could hear screaming coming from inside the school. Warren opened the door as they all rushed into the school to see Hammond being ripped apart by an adult and the baby Z. Aurora stood there watching the horror show unfold in front of her. Slowly, they walked out of the school, the grief on their shoulders a little heavier.
"Well none of this would have happened if you'd just left that damn baby." Murphy argued
"I didn't tell Hammond to get eaten by a baby." Garnett countered.
"Never mind that now. We need a plan." Warren spoke up.
"My Plan is that I am taking this truck and I am forgetting about vaccines and labs and all of you!" Murphy yelled, hitting the truck "I wanted off this train from day one, and now is my chance." The Man added annoyedly
"Wait Wait! you can't just go! What about California? What about the Vaccine?" Doc panicked
"What if it's real? What if there's a chance?" Addy added
"What if it's you?" Aurora asked, looking at the man.
"Addy! how do we know this isn't all bullshit?" Mack interrupted
"How does anybody know anything anymore?" Murphy groaned
"Delta-Xray-Delta." A voice from inside the school interrupted.
They all looked around confused, their eyes landing on the school. Addie ran inside, grabbed the radio, and ran out, the voice repeating the same thing.
"Hello?" Addy spoke confusedly into the radio.
"I copy you, Delta-Xray!" The voice spoke back
"This is- This is Northern Light. Who am I speaking to?"
"Addison Carver"
"Okay. I need to speak to Lieutenant Hammond."
"Hammond's Dead"
"I didn't copy that, Delta-Xray. DId you say that Hammond is dead?"
"Yes." Addison confirmed
"Is the package safe?" The voice questioned
"Package?" They all questioned, "What- What package? Who is this?" Addy asked the voice
"Listen, I need to speak to whoever's in charge." The voice demanded.
"Who is it?" Warren questioned "They won't say. They want to know who's in charge." Everyone looked up to where Charlie stood.
" You are." Warren told Charlie as Addy handed him the radio.
Charlie took the radio from the girl. "This is Sergeant Garnett of the National Guard. Who is this?" He asked.
"Sargeant Garnett. Lieutenant Hammond was transporting a civilian named Murphy to California. Is he still alive?" The Man questioned " Yes. He's still Alive."
"Good- good are you aware of Operation Bite Mark?" "Do you mean the lab in California?"
"Yes! Yes! Listen to me! It is imperative that you get Murphy alive to California. DO you copy!? " "But we don't know--" That's when the radio cut out, and all that came through was static.
"It's Dead" he groaned, fiddling with the antenna "So?" Warren asked
"Looks like we're taking Mr. Congeniality here to California." Garnette spoke
"Who?" Murphy asked sassily
Garnett threw his radio down. "Says me, Damn it!" It didn't take long for them to load up in the trucks. Aurora stole the front seat, sticking her tongue out at Addy, who went for the seat. The two trucks drove along the road, Doc stopping next to an unknown man walking along the road.
"Hey! Hey there! Oh, man. You're that sharpshooter that saved my ass!" Doc spoke gleefully. "I want to thank you!" he smiled. " Do you need a ride?" He questioned Aurora, leaned forward looking around Doc to the boy that stood there stoically before nodding his head, and hopping into the bed of the truck. Tapping the roof of the truck to let them know he was good.
“Are you sure we should be picking up more strangers?” Aurora questioned the older man. Doc just nodded, smiling down at the young girl.

Aurora Grace Carver was your typical good girl next door-kind, caring, always following the rules, a cheerleader-everything you think of when you think of your typical girl next door. On the outside, she had the perfect suburban family of parents, 2 siblings, and a dog. On the inside, her father worked too much, her mother spent too much time gambling, and her sister stayed close to home just so she could make sure her siblings were taken care of. Aurora spent most of her time at school, with her friends, or dancing. She had straight A's, joined every extracurricular she could. Aurora was on track to graduate and go to Harvard.  She would have said everything was perfect or at least as perfect as it could be to her, or at least all she knew.
Unfortunately, things rarely remained perfect during Aurora's senior year of high school, an outbreak of dead people reawakening and craving the livings flesh and brains. Aurora lost everything in the blink of an eye, only making it through with her sister. When the Zombie apocalypse started, this meant that Aurora had to change everything and no longer be that perfect girl next door. Would it be bad to say that for Aurora, the dead rising might have been one of the best things to happen to her?

chapter thirteen, however long
a/n: thank u to everyone who has read and came along this series!! thoroughly enjoyed writing this and hopefully write something again soon!
prev. series masterlist!
Tumblr media
“Be honest,” you start, pulling out a sandwich wrapped neatly in foil. “Did Emily pack this for you?”
Jacob let out a scandalized gasp. “Excuse you. I made that with my own two hands.”
You raised a brow. “Right. And by made, you mean unwrapped and re-wrapped?”
He grinned, those familiar crinkles forming at the corners of his eyes. “Details.”
You shook your head, smiling despite yourself. The blanket beneath you was soft from use, spread across a patch of tall grass that swayed gently with the breeze. The clearing was quiet—just birdsong, the hush of wind, and the occasional creak of a tree shifting in the distance. The sun was beginning to dip, golden light spilling low across the field, painting everything in amber.
Jacob lay down beside you, propped on one elbow. You watched him from the corner of your eye. He looked peaceful here, the soft light catching in his hair, turning the edges gold.
“Hi,” you said, voice quiet.
“Hi,” he replied, turning slightly so your noses were nearly touching.
You’re looking at each other with soft smiles for a while, just admiring. His lashes, his hair, his eyes. Then a tiny piece of fuzz drifts onto his cheek, and you reach over to gently brush it away.
“Sometimes,” he says, voice quieter now, “I think about what it would’ve been like if none of this had happened. No wolves. No imprinting. Just us. Just normal.”
You glance at him. “Would you want that?”
He hesitates, then shrugs a little. “Part of me wonders. But no—I wouldn’t trade this. Not even close.”
You raise an eyebrow. “Even with all the chaos?”
“Even then,” he stopped to meet your eyes. “Because you’re in it. And if you’re in it then I’d choose it every time.”
You swallow hard and look away, blinking fast. The clouds are turning pink now, dusted lavender at the edges. A single star appears, faint but steady, near the horizon.
“I want you to know that I never wanted you to feel like you have no choice. If… this ever gets too much, if it’s not what you want—I want you to leave. I want you to do what’s best for you.”
You turned to him sharply. “Shut up.”
His brows shot up.
“I’m serious,” you said, nudging him. “You don’t get to say something like that and expect me to be okay with it.”
“No, listen. I’m just saying—”
“Make me,” you interrupted.
The corner of his mouth twitched. “Make you what?”
“Shut up and listen,” you whispered.
He leaned in, eyes flickering between yours and your lips. You kissed him—slow, lingering, the kind of kiss that says everything words fall short of. His hand came up to cradle your cheek like you were something precious. When you pulled back, you stayed close, noses brushing, breaths mingling.
There’s a long pause, the kind that lingers gently, filled with everything you’re both too full to say.
“I don’t know how long I’ve got,” Jacob says quietly. “Could be years. Could be more. Or not.”
You turn to him, your voice steadier than you expected. “However long it is, I want it. All of it.”
He smiles, a little sad, a little in awe. “Hopefully more than once every two years.”
You let out a soft laugh, swatting his arm. “Hey! It wasn’t fully my fault.”
His smile fades into something quieter, something weightier. “Whatever time I have,” he says, eyes locked on yours, “it’s yours.”
Tumblr media
The sky was pale and overcast, the kind of muted gray that felt like holding your breath. Dew clung to the grass, dampening your sneakers as you carried the last suitcase to the trunk.
Jacob was already there, waiting. He took it from your hands without a word, loading it carefully. You wiped at your eyes, quickly, hoping he hadn’t seen.
He had.
But he didn’t say anything—just opened his arms.
You stepped into him like it was instinct, burying your face in the soft cotton of his hoodie. He held you tight, one hand cupped around the back of your head, the other warm and steady at your waist.
“I’ll come back,” you whispered into his shoulder.
“I’ll be here,” he said. “Always.”
“We’ll call,”
“We’ll text,”
“You can come for Thanksgiving. Winter break. Spring.” You clung tighter. “You don’t have to wait until next summer.”
His lips pressed gently to your temple. “Okay.”
Your parents were already settled in the car, giving you the quiet space you needed but clearly ready to leave. You stepped back just enough to meet Jacob’s eyes one last time.
He leaned against your car’s passenger door, arms crossed, his face carefully guarded—too composed for what you both felt.
“Hey,” you whispered.
His forehead dropped to yours. “I know. It’s just—”
“Four hours,” you finished softly. “I know.”
He kissed your cheek, careful not to draw attention from your dad’s watchful eye.
When he pulled back, he exhaled, a breath that sounded like it hurt more than he let on. “Go,” he said, voice low. “Before I steal you back.”
Your mom slid into the driver’s seat, already holding the keys. You climbed into the passenger side, grateful your dad was driving your car—because you knew you wouldn’t make it through the drive without breaking down.
The engine hummed as you pulled away. You glanced in the rearview mirror.
Jacob stood in the driveway, hand raised in a quiet wave, watching until you disappeared from sight.
Tumblr media
Your house feels too clean. Too quiet.
Your parents don’t ask questions when you head straight upstairs. They just watch you with that soft, careful expression people get when they know you’re holding something fragile in your chest.
You drop one of your bags by the door and stand in the middle of your room for a second, like you’re waiting for it to feel like yours again. The walls are the same. The sheets still smell like your detergent, but the silence feels different now. Too thin. Too still.
You sit on the floor and unzip your bag.
There’s a sweatshirt that doesn’t belong to you. A folded flannel. A faded bracelet made of string and wood. You don’t rush. You just keep unpacking, piece by piece, until your hand brushes something crinkled in the pocket of the bag.
A candy wrapper. An orange Starburst.
You smooth the crumpled wrapper out instinctively, the paper trembling slightly between your fingers. There, scrawled in the middle in messy, smudged Sharpie, are the words Kisses still owed.
A laugh bubbles up, but it’s tangled with a sudden swell of tears, and you’re not sure whether you’re laughing or crying. The feeling lodges deep in your throat, a mixture of sweetness and ache that makes your chest tighten.
Your fingers curl around the wrapper as you close your eyes, letting the quiet weight of it settle inside you.
It always kind of was Jacob Black.
Always was.

Hey guys!
It’s Ren, I’m in search of some rp partners! I just had a few notes about everything so if you wanna give them a look!
Age — I’m 20+ and therefore won’t write with anyone below this age range.
Writing Style / Literacy Level — I’ve been writing for a few years, and feel my writing can be advanced in terms of literacy. But I’ve also been know to do very basic writing so I’d probably fall into the middle most times
Themes — I love all themes. Dark, Romance, Fluffy, angsty, etc I love a good theme and as long as it’s fun I’m here for it.
I’m very open to suggestions and thoughts so don’t hesitate to throw them at me. I love for suggestions!
Characters — I have tons of Oc’s and I also love writing for Canon characters I do just get a bit nervous with canons cause I fear I don’t live up to their character
Writing Platform — I write on any platform but I’ve found Discord to be far more organized
Expected Response Time — I tend to be active with my responses; multiple times throughout the day. I do work multiple jobs so some days maybe slower than others.
Fandoms I write for-
Supernatural
Twilight
Harry Potter
Teen wolf
Z nation

Marvel
Plus those are just the main ones I can think of
I’m very open to chat, I love discussing and building plots together and overall talking about any fandom in general, so don’t hesitate to send me a message with any thoughts 😊
