Who Needs A Wolf When You Have A Dino
David comes home a night early from his work trip but when he finds Angel asleep in their bed, there's an intruder in their arms: A small stuffed dinosaur.
Aka Angel needs to sleep with a stuffed animal when David is away, David finds out and fluff ensues.
Pairing: David/Angel
Content: fluff, slight angst, nb!Angel, use of they/them for Angel
A/N: Is this entire fic based on the fact that I actually own a dino plush I hug when listening to Redacted, specifically David's audios? Maybe. Shout out to Toby though, his neck is so floppy with how much I squeeze him whenever David does something cute.
David was not one for surprises, either giving or receiving them. But when the job he was working a few towns over suddenly canceled, he thought he would try to surprise his mate by coming home from his work trip a night early. He quietly opened the door to their house and placed his keys in the bowl by the door before making his way to the bedroom. It was close to midnight, which meant there was a 50/50 chance his insomniac of a mate was still awake.
“Angel?” he asked softly, not wanting to scare them if they were still awake as he gently pushed the bedroom door open. The room was dark and as his eyes adjusted, the image of his sleeping mate came into view. He felt a slight smile dance across his lips as he walked closer to them before sitting on the end of the bed and resting a hand carefully on their blanketed leg.
It was then he noticed the intruder in their bed. Held tightly in Angel’s arms was something David had never seen before: a small stuffed dinosaur. He didn’t have long to think about it though as it was clear his movements on the bed had roused Angel slightly.
“Davey?” They asked in a sleep-soaked voice and David’s heart fluttered slightly. He could say he hated that nickname all he wanted but he couldn’t deny the feeling it left in his chest every time they said it.
“Yeah Angel, it’s me.” He replied, slowly rubbing their leg until they flipped over to face him, unknowingly bringing the dinosaur in their arms with them.
“You’re home early.” They mused, a sleepy smile plastered across their face.
“Not early enough though, seeing as I’ve been replaced.” He motioned toward the dinosaur and the smile on Angel’s face dropped immediately. The sudden change in expression didn't go unnoticed as David realized how awake and nervous they suddenly seemed.
“O-oh. Uh…” They quickly unwrapped their arms from around the stuffed animal and placed it on the floor next to the bed. “Y-yeah. Sorry. Look, I know it’s kind of childish, well, not kind of childish, really childish, but it’s just, it’s really hard to sleep without you. I’m sorry, I know that makes me sound really clingy but-” Their speech was picking up speed with every word, a telltale sign of nerves in them that David knew all too well.
“Woah Woah, Angel, it’s ok. That wasn’t an accusation or anything.” He smiled slightly and they let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding.
“Oh.” Was all they could say before the room went silent for a moment.
“I don’t think it’s childish. I had just… never seen you with it before.” He tried and they sighed.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hide him from you. It’s just-”
“You don’t have to explain Angel, I’m not mad,” he added and the room was left in silence again, but he could tell the nerves had begun to build in Angel again. “What’s his name?” He asked earnestly, and Angel looked confused.
“What?” They asked and he picked up the dinosaur from the floor.
“His name. Does he have one?” He asked, and David saw the tension leave their shoulders slightly.
“Oh. Uh, Dino.” They replied and David scoffed.
“Dino?” He asked incredulously, and Angel sat up slightly.
“Look, I was really little when I named him, ok?” They replied, a smile finally returning to their face.
“Alright, I guess that makes up for it. Still a pretty bad name though.” That earned him a chuckle, and with the now lighter atmosphere in the room, he added, “How come I’ve never seen him before?” He asked as he stood and made his way to the dresser, ready to take off his work clothes and get into something comfier, leaving the dinosaur on the bed next to his mate.
“I was kind of… hiding him from you.” They reached over and snuggled the stuffed animal to their chest.
“Why? What, did you think I’d think less of you for having a stuffed animal?” He asked, but once he was met with silence, he realized that was exactly what they had thought. “Angel?”
“I mean, not really... It’s just… every time I’ve tried to show him to a partner of mine, the reaction hasn’t always been great. I even had an ex try to throw him out once!” They finished with a slight laugh, but David could tell it wasn’t genuine. There was still a level of hurt there.
“That's awful,” He said somberly before making his way back over to the bed and laying down next to them.
“It’s ok. I broke up with them not long after that so… And now I have you, so it all worked out.” They smiled, and David leaned over to place a kiss on their forehead.
“What you said earlier, is it really that hard to sleep without me?” He asked, and Angel sighed.
“Yeah? I thought I had gotten over it actually. Just being in our bed was enough for a while but after the inversion… He just always helps me sleep without you.” They finished and David took hold of Dino, lifting him in front of his face.
“Well then, thank you Dino for taking care of my Angel.” He could hear Angel’s chuckle from beside him and it filled his chest with warmth. “But I’m here now. Your services aren’t needed for tonight.” He said as he gently placed him on the nightstand next to him. He turned back toward Angel and wrapped an arm around them, fully enveloping them and letting them bury themself in his chest. They must have showered before he got home because he could smell their shampoo as he held them close.
“Thank you, David.” They said and he hummed.
“Of course, Angel. I know I can be nasty at times but I don’t want you to feel like you have to hide anything for fear of being made fun of. Not from me.” He finished and he felt them nod into his chest before the sleep he had interrupted took its hold on them again, and eventually, it took David too.
As usual, David woke up before Angel, and as he was sure they had nothing but microwave meals while he was gone, he was going to treat them to homemade breakfast in bed. He carefully peeled them off of him without waking them and as he got dressed and ready to leave the room, he realized how empty their arms looked. He glanced over to the cartoony dinosaur that was still on the nightstand before picking it up and gently placing it in their arms. Instinctively, their arms tightened around it and David swore he could see a slight smile cross their sleeping face as he left the room.

Was just re-listening to The Inversion (because I hate myself apparently) and I noticed something. When Angel first shows up, Milo gives them David's jacket that he left outside the ward. And now we have a video about Angel stealing David's hoodie and being really attached to it... I wonder if it's the same jacket???? Because if so... Erik I have some words >:'(

Idiots In Love
Usually, when Davey insults Angel, they can hear in his voice the love and care that he doesn’t actually mean it. But amidst a heated argument, a mean comment said with an raised, angry voice is harder for Angel to move past.
Pairing: David/Angel
Content: Hurt/Comfort, Angst with a happy ending, Argument, Slight swearing, NB!Angel, Use of they/them for Angel
A/N: My first tumblr fic, hope it’s good! Also, don’t ask what they were arguing about, I don’t know either. PS, Hailey, if you’re reading this, maybe don’t :)
“You fucking idiot!” David yelled and it caught Angel off guard. They had been called an idiot before, especially by the man standing in front of them. When they had forgotten to eat for almost an entire day, he called them that. When they tried to show off their biking skills and ended up falling face first into the dirt. When David had gotten home earlier that night and they nearly tripped on their way into his arms.
But all of those times were different. There was love behind the word, as with most of David’s insults toward them. But this time, there was no love behind the name. Just anger. Anger so blinding, David hadn’t noticed the change in Angel’s demeanor. He hadn’t noticed that they had stopped fighting back as he continued to yell. He hadn’t noticed the pain that replaced the fire in their eyes as his words sank in. He finished another viperous statement and stood there, waiting for a response.
It took a moment before Angel looked up from the floor. “When had they looked away?” he thought, but before his brain could catch up, Angel spoke.
“I-I….” They tried, but couldn’t finish without looking at the floor again. “Sorry.” Their voice was so small, much too small for someone who was just in a heated argument. David’s anger melted away as the true image of his mate came into view. Now he could see how small they were making themselves. How they kept their eyes glued to the floor, how their hands wouldn’t stop fidgeting. How even when looking down, he could see the tears beginning to well up in their eyes.
“Did I do that?" He thought. He couldn’t remember them ever being this… how to describe it? They never let him win an argument, not easily. They always had some sort of comment or come back to add to everything he said. What had he missed? Why were they acting like this?
“Woah, wait, Angel, what happened?” His voice was soft, a big departure from the loud, frustrated tone he was using a moment ago. He started to reach out to place his hand on their shoulder but paused, awaiting any kind of indication of permission. Their slight step back from him gave him their answer as he lowered his arm back down to his side. They sniffled slightly as they tried to speak up again.
“I uh… I just need a second… please.” They pleaded, and David nodded.
“Do you want me to leave? I can go into a different room if you need-”
“No. Stay, please. Just… stop yelling.” They finished quieter than they started and David nodded again before walking over to the couch and sitting down. Angel stayed standing for a second before going to the couch and sitting next to him, keeping a little distance between them. The room sizzled in silence as David waited patiently for a sign that his mate was ready to talk.
Angel knew he didn’t mean it. He was angry and it probably just slipped out. By the look on his face, he didn’t even know he said it, let alone mean for it to hurt them. But it had. They looked over at him and watched his eyes swim with worry and confusion as he stared at his hands in his lap. They knew that look and could almost hear his thoughts as he fidgeted. He knew he had done something wrong, but still hadn’t placed what. They had fought before, loudly even. What did he do this time to make them act like this? Slowly, Angel extended their arm and took one of his hands into their own, causing his gaze to meet theirs. He looked like he wanted to speak, to apologize immediately, but kept it to himself to allow them to speak first.
“You called me an idiot.” They said sadly, and David huffed, almost unconsciously. His slight chuckle was immediately replaced with confusion again as he realized they were serious
“What?” He waited, and they looked down sadly again. His heart seized as he realized that that was the wrong reaction. He reached his hand out again to cup their face and once again paused for permission. They nodded slightly and he held their cheek in his hand, pulling their gaze from the floor to his eyes. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. It's just… I’m always calling you an idiot. You know I never mean it.” He flashed the slightest of smiles, something that made Angel’s heart squeeze knowing there was a majority of people who had never seen that smile. But in that thought process, they realized they had never actually said anything when David started again. “You do know that, right?” The smile shifted into a serious, sad face.
“Yes, of course, I know that. It’s just…” They paused and sighed before continuing. “You don’t usually call me that when you’re angry.” They finished and the realization hit David like a truck. He hadn’t even realized he had called them that, which meant he definitely didn’t say it as lovingly as he usually did. He watched as Angel’s eyes filled with tears again and opened his arms.
“Oh, Angel.” He sighed as they threw themself against his chest and wrapped his arms around them. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have said that, no matter how mad I was. I know our relationship hinges on snarky comments and comebacks, but I would hate to say anything that actually hurt your feelings.” The room went silent again, save for Angel’s fastened breath, so David added, “You’re not an idiot.” He began to rub circles into their back as they held onto him tightly.
If he thought a year ago he would be holding someone he considered his mate in his arms, soothing them and reassuring them that a comment he had made was too harsh and that he was sorry, he wouldn’t recognize himself. And yet, there he was. He lowered his head and planted a kiss in their hair as they attempted to steady their breathing. Eventually, they pulled themself away from his chest and took a deep breath before looking into his eyes again.
“I know, I know that. Can we just… agree to leave the name calling out of arguments?” They offered, and David smiled softly another smile they knew was only for them.
“Yes, of course. I’m sorry I broke that boundary, even if it hadn’t been agreed on yet, it should have been obvious.” He chastised himself, but Angel just pulled themself up and planted a small kiss on his lips.
“Thank you.” They smiled slightly before resting their head against his chest again. “I know we never actually resolved the argument but… I’m tired.” They decided.
“We can continue the conversation much more level-headedly tomorrow. Let’s go to bed.” The two separated as they stood from the couch and got ready for bed until finally, they were laying next to each other, sleep tugging Angel's eyes closed as they felt their mate's warm body next to them. He reached an arm around them and pulled them closer, and just as Angel was about to let sleep take them, they heard something whispered against their hair.
“I love you, Angel.” His voice was low and soft, clearly just as tired as they were and they smiled against his chest.
“I love you too, Davey.”
