Dubrovnik, Croatia
When I had the chance to go to Dubrovnik this past summer, I didn’t hesitate. While it’s not the most popular destination for people from the United States, I was excited to find out why Europeans flock to Dubrovnik for weekend getaways and holidays.
Old town Dubrovnik is what many people think of when they think of Dubrovnik. While there are other areas of the city, Old town is located on the edge of the Adriatic Sea and completely walled in. There are few ways to enter and exit the Old Town, with the main entrance having castle gates.

Being in Dubrovnik feels other-timely. In a certain way, it feels wrong to use technology in this small area of historic land. There are stone staircases everywhere, with small shops and hidden alleys that somehow lead you through tiny vessel streets and transport you to the other side of town in under a few minutes. On more than one occasion, I found myself wander into an alley and end up in a hidden alcove on the edge of town overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

There's still native folk that live in unassuming alleys who seemingly keep their doors open while they clean and smile at you as you pass. That being said, it’s hard to ignore the dominance of tourists that flock to the city each day. Being in Dubrovnik slightly reminded me of Venice, where there are very few locals and it has the feel of an amusement park - as people arrive on boats and shuffle through small canals in a strange but organized way.
It’s understandable if you’re tight on money and don’t want to do many touristy things. However, spend the money and walk the walls of the city. It’s the one thing that everyone needs to do when in Dubrovnik; you get the most classic and desired views of the city and the sea. You can see most of Old Town Dubrovnik in a day or two, but I highly advise you take the time to visit the islands around Dubrovnik, including Lokrum and Lopud that are only a short boat ride away from Old Town. These islands bring with them more beauty of the Adriatic Sea, and are much more relaxed than shuffling through Old Town.

Tip: Dubrovnik is a great stop on a longer European trip. For Americans, it can be quite expensive to get to Croatia if you try to fly directly there and back. Instead, consider flying to closer European destinations, like the UK. Dubrovnik is a popular holiday destination for people from the UK, so there are many cheap flights and holiday packages that you can find, for extremely reasonable prices through British websites and travel agents.

Any must stops along HWY 5 from San Francisco to Portland?
When we drove from San Francisco to Portland, we actually trucked it overnight and didn’t really stop anywhere. Being in Oregon when the sun was rising was absolutely amazing, as the highway swerves through high altitudes and forests. I’m sure you know Highway 101 is the most scenic route to take, and National Parks like Redwood are directly off this road along with gorgeous coastal stops. The Lost Coast in northern Cali and southern Oregon is a mostly natural and development free coastline that seems like an interesting experience.
If you take Highway 5 north, there is plenty to do as well. I have heard that Shasta National Forest is breathtaking. Crater Lake National Park is a little bit off of HWY 5 but it looks like heaven. The Volcanic Scenic Byway in both California and Oregon seems pretty amazing as well and looks like there is an abundance of things to see. The drive north is mainly just various mountains, forests and lakes… which is great!
Enjoy!- Taylor

Quiet Highlands Cottage in Denver, CO
If you are looking for an adorable cottage to stay in while visiting Denver, look no further. This AirBNB apartment was literally heaven. We had our own private space, the owners next door were extremely friendly, and we were just so pleasantly surprised with all of the intricate decorative details throughout the small house. We just kept saying that if we had our own apartment to decorate, it would look exactly like this.
Located so close to the city itself, yet being on a private suburban street with plenty of parking out front, we got really lucky with this one. Another plus was W 32nd Ave being walking distance from the cozy space, loaded with shops, restaurants, bars and more (all decorated with warm Christmas lights hung above the sidewalks.) I highly recommend this cute AirBNB for anyone visiting Denver, Colorado.
Find the space: here.
