Being disabled is so funny because people love to tell me that I can do anything while also telling me not to do things allllll the time. I am an adult now but as a kid? The conflicting messaging was confusing and painful. You can do anything. But not that. Or that. And why aren't you able to do this?????

i just wanna say, as a feeding tube haver, that it's so much more possible to get used to invasive medical devices than you might fear.
i grew up horrified by even being reminded organs exist. i was just so severely grossed out by human anatomy. i got a lot better about it through years of chronic illness, since you just have to get used to it. but that's the baseline i started from originally, in case you are also squeamish and wonder if it's possible for that to change.
so when i needed a feeding tube, i was pretty distressed by the idea. having a tube sticking through a new hole in my abdomen was a seriously horrifying concept, and i couldn't imagine coping with having a stoma (the hole) and caring for it etc. i did it because i needed it to survive but thought i might never get used to it.
and yeah, it freaked me out at first. but eventually i did just get used to it. it just feels normal now. i even feel affection towards it, because it is keeping me alive.

Me Giving a Pressed Conference: our advocacy for the disabled must include the addict, the imperfect victim, those we despise; the right to autonomy and life cannot devolve into a popularity contest
Reporter I Hate (Not Sexual Tension): Does that include all the attendees of the Bored Ape NFT event who went blind
Me: *Blood streaming from my nostrils and eyes* david, it includes everyone

Disabled bathroom psa:
When I and other wheelchair users are talking about how abled people should not be using disabled toilets I can almost garente that they are not talking about your standard slightly larger stall in a bathroom with only two stalls. Im talking about separate bathrooms designed entirely for disabled people. Handicap bathrooms are different from handicap stalls. They are a separate room with its own toilet sink and mirror all positioned with the equipment designed for those with mobility issues and mobility aids such as walkers, gait trainers, wheelchairs, and crutches. A handicap stall is a stall ment to be wide enough to alow a wheelchair to fit (most don't though especially if you are fat or in a power chair.) With one or two grab bars placed. I don't care about people using the handicap stall if others are taken, they need the extra room (bags don't count, I mean things like strollers, todlers, fat, and autistic people not your shopping) those who need the grab bars like people with mobility issues, back problems, and invisible disabilities. I also don't care if you use it because all the others are in use. I care when people use it to make stupid videos on their phone, hang out, smoke, or just cause they like it when there are a dozen other stalls available. I swear most of you never think of anything besides making sure that you are never the one in the wrong.🙄
If I'm not talking about you, IM NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU.
I am talking about those who use those bathrooms as a fashion changing stall. The ones who smoke and film tik toks talking about the crazy disabled person knocking on the door. I am talking about the people who, after telling then I am going to pee myself decide that acting like I don't exist or that they can't here me will make me go away and guess what? Make me pee all over myself.

I think another thing, especially in us disabled at a young age, is not having the chance to form what we want to do with our lives.
I spent childhood told I'm faking and lying and just trying to get attention or go home from school early. I spent middle school in the hospital, bouncing from specialist to specialist. Only to get sicker and sicker. Meanwhile everyone told me I was faking so much that I believed them I was faking. Finally I got diagnosed with a rare immune issue and TB. I was told I wasn't going to live long with those diagnosis. Then treatment worked and I got better. I had already believed I was going to die, so why plan for the future? Went to high-school with renewed vigor taking AP and college courses. This didn't last long I was in and out of hospital again before dropping out of high school. Now I'm still collecting new diagnosis.
I never planned for the future because I wasn't supposed to have one.
And when I dared plan I was met with the reality that I could never plan
Disability can absolutely make you feel like a failure. I don't think that's talked about enough. Especially when it strips you of life experiences/milestones. At 16/17 years old, most teens are driving around and getting their first car. That was the age I truly started feeling different from my peers. I was stuck riding the school bus and relying on family and friends to take me places while everyone else my age had this newfound freedom. I started college and then had to drop out because I wasn't receiving the accommodations I needed or knowing what I wanted to do with my life. "You should already know what you want to do! What's your problem?" My problem is that I didn't get the same push into adulthood as everyone else. I didn't get the same freedom they did. I've always had to rely on someone. In high school, I wasn't worrying about my future. I was worrying about my health. When my next seizure would be. If I would have a seizure in the middle of class. If I was going to be bullied or assaulted again. Flash forward - I'm now working a job full time and just got diagnosed with all kinds of stuff in my lower spine including a bulging disc facet arthrosis, and facet effusions. Knowing that this is progressive and I might need surgery if conservative treatments fail - I genuinely don't know how I'm expected to live a proper life. My manager is pissed at me for having to go to doctors appointments and it's so hard.

people get inevitably more attractive as they get older and i don't even mean that in a 'signs of ageing are attractive' kind of way (although i firmly believe they are) but i mean that as people grow they figure out more things about themselves. whether it's something as minor as figuring out a hairstyle that they like or something as major as deciding to transition people grow more and more into themselves as time goes on and there's NOTHING hotter than a person who's grown into themselves and figured out what they want and as cliched as that sounds i really believe it's true. you look at someone you haven't seen for years and you're caught off guard by how much more attractive you find them and when you think about why that is it's always because they started dressing in a way that makes them happy or that makes movement more comfortable for them or they stopped trying to force themselves to lose weight and they're more at home in their skin and that's inherently hot. also signs of ageing are hot and people who utter the words 'they really let themselves go' should be exterminated on sight
