Something I noticed that I hadn't before about the scene when Katara bloodbends the captain of the southern raiders is the little smile on her face as she does it.

And it's a bit shocking, and this is also when Zuko looks at her, his eyes wide.

A lot of ink has been spilled on the way the show often frames Zuko's face to emphasize the scar in certain moments, to emphasize the duality of his character.

They do the same thing with Katara here, literally splitting her face in half by the placement of her hand (you could even say it's Katara's own hand, her own actions, that's creating this duality in her). As she brings her hand down, her frown turns upwards.

It's one of the things that makes this scene so tense, and a little chilling

And then Zuko looks at her and recognizes something there.

I also like the way he turns away from her after quickly getting over his shock, though, his eyes narrowing, and turns towards the captain. It's an acknowledgement of where the real object of horror is in this scene.
