DAY 20: A Father’s Duty (Ryuuken)

Another installment of my Prinz des Litchs AU .

His great knowledge about the quincy, his status as the last Etch alive in the world and for Uryuu’s sake, Ryuuken took a very active role during the war against YW.

Throughout the course of these events, Ryuuken and Uryuu learned and managed to connect again, and now, almost a decade later, both of them have managed a better relationship as father and son. 

Ryuuken has mellowed quite a bit, still keeping his sharp tongue and his special talent to get under his son’ skin (just when Uryuu gets too stubborn or compromise his health); no one can deny Ryuuken looks way more relaxed and at peace; Isshin would even say he looks happier (something he won’t say to his face unless he wants to get shot).

As a result of a long research spawning various generations of quincy, Ryuuken was the one capable to save Uryuu’s soul from being crushed under YW overhelming power. However it had sequels and a terrible prize to pay, however, practical as he is, Ryuuken believes as long as Uryuu lives and can have a future, it is enough. Uryuu thinks the same (his friends are not so sure.).

Due to the risky solution, Uryuu can’t abandon the spiritual world ever again. The living world with the current level of reishi can’t sustain the great power he now posses (which includes the Soul King power). Even Karakura with its rich spiritual atmosphere is barely enough to let him stay for less than a couple of hours.  

Another side effect is that Uryuu will fall asleep suddenly, at any given moment. The first 5 years were the hardest for everyone, but for Ryuuken it was the worst, because it made him doubt and think of Kanae and the oppressive fear wondering if his son will wake up ever again. Even now, after a decade, and the certainty of Uryuu getting better, he can’t help but feel that undercurrent of sadness whenever Uryuu falls asleep when talking to him.

Whenever it happens, Ryuuken takes his son to his rooms, and talks to him with a gentle voice that he only uses when he is asleep (and no one is looking).

Headcanon that Kanae always knew she wanted to name the child she had with Ryuken Uryū. She knew since she was 10 I bet!

Hey friend! Sorry to take that much time answering this. But is my Headcanon that Katagiri name Uryuu after she almost confessed under the rain to Ryuuken. I think all cliked that day and she decided to name the most precious thing she gave to this world after the moment in which everything changed for her and Ryuuken. Uryuu’s name gets a new dimension when you think it like this, IMHO.
