i am not a writer of any particular note or renown and thus have no real credibility for pushing back against popular "writing" "advice"

but if i ever AM in such a position of note and/or renown i think my bitchy petty hobbyhorse is gonna be: i don't believe in "shitty first drafts" or "just get the words on the page" or anything along those lines

obviously there are people who spend endless time dithering about The Perfect Version That Exists In Their Head and thus never get *anything at all* on the page, and that's obviously a waste, they should just write Something in that case

but i *also* see people who have blindly & hurriedly written hundreds of thousands of words... with no notable improvement whatsoever, no effort to actually make their shit *better* rather than simply having it be *extant*, and seemingly no understanding of like... what might make anyone want to *read* the story, where they're losing the reader's interest, etc

and while i'm a big believer in "you should feel no shame revisiting similar *themes*, interests, motifs, plots, etc as often as you like," i don't think doing the same thing *shittily* over and over with no self-awareness really leads to progress, any moreso than just practicing the same piano song over and over but hitting half the notes wrong leads to progress

and, at least in my limited not-noted-not-renowned experience, most the time, if the words aren't flowing, it's because there's a deeper structural issue i'm bumping up against that's subconsciously impeding my progress

and sometimes sure the answer is "look, i don't know what's wrong, but i just need to finish this story and submit it, so i'm going to get something Good Enough down"

but i think most the time you are in fact better served by taking some steps back & thinking Real Hard & maybe putting the story aside for a bit until you can figure out what the problem is

and basically never is "just blindly shove ahead with no understanding of what you're doing" a good solution

like, there's such a thing as first drafts that are so shitty as to be unsalvagable! and sure maybe you learn something from an unsalvagable first draft. but. i suspect there are better ways to learn those things lol

I'll be taking a longer break than usual between chapters while I work on another project, but I'm hoping it will be good for me. I've been a bit burned out, and I'm hoping I can come back to chapter four energized.
