CHAPTER ONE UP - FINALLY!
First chapter of Next Thing You Know is up on AO3! Thanks to everyone who has shown an interest in the snippets I’ve posted over the last few months. It’s still a WIP but I’ve decided to say fuck it and start posting. Huge thanks to @rdng1230 for cheerleading and helping me hammer out the dreaded summary! ❤️😊❤️
Rated M (will change) Mpreg - Salbucktommy Endgame
It's been four months. The shittiest four months Buck can remember having in a long time. He's past the baking phase now, past the crying, past the lying on the couch staring at the walls. He is now firmly in the, “Maybe you need to get back out there?” phase. Hence he's at a bar in WeHo yet again, gritting his teeth while being hit on by a lanky drunk guy in a suit who looks like he just got off work in the world's dullest profession. He's probably telling Buck all about it but he a) can't hear a word, and b) doesn't give a shit.
The guy leans in, putting a hand on his arm with a smile. Buck nods politely, idly wondering if the waves of Ultraviolet cologne coming off the guy constitute some kind of public health risk that he ought to call in.
Suddenly the guy almost lunges at him, apparently out of nowhere, and tries his damnedest to stick his tongue down Buck's throat while grabbing his ass with both hands. Buck shoves the guy away and stumbles back slightly, caught off balance, falling against the bar before he rights himself. He steps forward, he can immediately see this night ending with them both getting kicked out. But suddenly there's someone else standing between the two of them, grabbing suit-guy by his lapels and hauling him towards him.
"Hey asshole," the newcomer says. He's a couple inches shorter than Buck but built like a brick shithouse and not in a showy way. His shoulders are broad and his arms are huge but everything about him screams functional and solid. The suit guy shrinks back under his gaze. "Oh you remember me huh? Good. Now why don’t you fuck off and leave this nice man alone. Unless you want a repeat performance?”
Suit asshole was already beating a retreat the moment the newcomer let go of him, hardly stopping to look back.
Buck frowns, annoyed. Is he supposed to be impressed? Does the new guy think he’s some sort of fucking damsel in distress?
"Hey uh—You didn't have to…"
The new guy turns to Buck and shrugs easily. "Nope, but that asshole tries it on with some poor fucker every night and I like putting the fear of god into pricks like him. Plus this way you don't get kicked out, so you can buy me a drink." The smile he gives Buck is wide and mischievous and lights up his whole face, highlighting his soft blue-grey eyes. Buck flushes. Oh. Oh. He's seriously hot. Buck finds his irritation fading fast.
"Oh I can, can I?" he asks, raising an eyebrow.

rewatching Hen Begins
sal is definitely the one who took the initiative on reporting gerrard, right?
at the infamous Team Jacob meal, gerrard says he’s worried about putting his life and the lives of “his men” in the “hands of someone who isn’t up to the job”
and sal gives him this long, evaluating, critical look

this is before hen thinks quickly to save the woman in the mudslide
this is before hen puts together the clues that there was another car in the accident and saves a drowned child
this look might be about female firefighters or about black firefighters but it is NOT about hen’s as-yet-untested abilities
i think sal sees gerrard as “someone who isn’t up to the job”
i think sal doesn’t trust gerrard with the lives of “his men”
we see later how gerrard dismisses hen’s ideas even when those ideas save lives. he chastises her for having them at all. does he listen to anyone else’s ideas? does he listen to sal?
how many people have died or been in unnecessary pain because gerrard has been too stubborn to listen to anyone but himself?
i think sal has wanted gerrard gone for a long time now
does he sense an opportunity in hen’s arrival? we know from Bobby Begins Again that sal wants to be captain. the easiest path to that for him is to take over from gerrard
gerrard has his say about women and leaves the table. sal kind of rolls his eyes but looks at tommy and nods for them to both leave with him

he looks almost regretful? like he doesn’t want to follow gerrard but knows he and tommy have to stay on his good side
maybe that’s the only way to get gerrard to listen—to make him see you as an extension of himself
so sal is still playing the game, still playing along as a card-carrying member of the Straight White Boys’ Club (and plays it so well that it wasn’t until my 5th rewatch with my saltommy goggles on that i even noticed this moment of evaluation at all)
throughout the episode, tommy follows closely at sal’s heels. sometimes tommy will look to gerrard for approval instead of sal (cutting out the middleman), but if sal goes somewhere, tommy is only a step behind him
sal knows how to play the game. tommy knows how to follow along. to hide in plain sight under the wing of someone who will guide him
i think sal said “let’s report this guy” and only had more and more justification as time went on—as hen proved herself more than capable and gerrard only got nastier in response
once their mission was set, tommy sent in his own reports. so did chimney, of course. who knows how many others sal recruited to report gerrard en masse
yes, hen is a great firefighter. but gerrard leaving the 118 was a coup, and it started before she set foot on her first call
this was a coup—and an unsuccessful one
gerrard was gone, yes. but sal did not replace him
i think this casts sal’s Bobby Begins Again insubordination/meltdown over being passed over for captain yet again into a more interesting light
after all sal has done for the 118? he got gerrard kicked out. he saved hen’s career—one of the smartest and most determined firefighters he’s ever worked with. he’s held the place together and run scenes as their string of retiring captains bumbled through calls
and then this random guy from minnesota is chastising sal for saving a kid trapped in a burning building? he thinks this is his house?

not me thinking about sal going back to the firehouse to fight bobby about being fired.
sal finding him in his office.
bobby saying, “you’re gonna learn to respect the chain of command.” in a tone that gets sal’s hackles raised but also sends a flash of something through him.

When Buckley met Sal
The first official chapter is out!
Pairing : Evan Buckley x Sal Deluca
Excerp:
When Sal walked through the threshold of the WeeWoo, his eyes instantly fixed on the hunched-down person at the bar. He took a minute to look him up and down before he approached.
Buckley looked like someone kicked him. Head in hand, an untouched bottle of beer in front of him. Similar to how he found him there a year ago. A year ago he was a sad puddle of a man. But still this hopeful, almost childlike glimmer around him, a stuttering mess. Back then he was pathetic; today he looked hollow, empty, and angry. The stubble around his chin was just below department regulations. Gone is the cheerful glimmer.
That's going to be fun.
“Well, well, well, look who we have here. If this isn't the hero of Wilshire Drive.”
@loulou-land you are an absolute god sent saint, listening to me rant about the same scene, for three days straight. THANK YOU❤️

do you have a favorite tommy kinard headcanon? :D
Ooooooo nonnie I have so many that I adore. And you know what, I’ll tease an upcoming fic cause maybe that’ll encourage me to actually FUCKING WRITE IT.
Sal steps in while Tommy is going through an awful time because as much as he doesn’t agree with that part of his friend, he can’t stand back and watch him suffer.
(Not Sal DeLuca redemption, necessarily, but nuanced Sal)

hi!! id love to hear more about sal knowing all along 👀
*slides dramatically into the camera frame* well, since you asked!
3 am thoughts with TK6!

So my idea is that Sal really knew about Tommy all along.
How? Couple of options. Maybe Sal’s gaydar is secretly amazing and he clocked it immediately. He might’ve looked at Tommy the moment he set step in the 118 and went “that man is gay af”.
All jokes aside (and really, that was only a half joke, his gaydar could actually be great) it could’ve been something like they went out for drinks and got smashed. Maybe Tommy referred to someone (like a celebrity crush or maybe a past hookup, I’m not of the opinion he had actual relationships before coming out) by the wrong pronouns. Maybe he outright said it. Something somewhere along those lines. And then the next day Tommy didn’t remember it but Sal did.
Or, and I find this even more likely, Sal actually had great observation skills. He watched how Tommy shied away from mentioning partners, how his girlfriends always “couldn’t make it”, how he would entertain flirtation from girls but never went home with them on nights out (or maybe didn’t flirt, but I feel like Tommy would’ve tried to blend in), and as his suspicion grew he watched Tommy and noticed that his eyes never strayed towards girls and how his eyes would drift towards men and snap away quickly-or maybe he fully avoided looking at the guys even Sal could admit were attractive.
So he decided to test it out. Next time there was a good chance to slip in a joke, he did. He teased Tommy about being gay. Tommy wasn’t prepared. He hadn’t been expecting it. So he froze, briefly. It wouldn’t have been something super obvious, or else it would’ve been too much. Tommy made it through the army; he’s been called gay before. But he was secure at the 118 and hadn’t prepared himself. And that’s when Sal knew, even more so when Tommy was tense for the next couple of shifts.
Tommy was probably waiting for him to make a big deal about it. But Sal didn’t. Why? Who knows. Maybe as long as Tommy was in the closet, Sal was fine ignoring it. Maybe they were friends enough that he wasn’t quite enough of an asshole as to out him. Or maybe it was more malicious. He wasn’t enough of an asshole as to out him, but he kept sliding in jokes, just to watch Tommy jolt. Even better when Gerrard started making jokes too.
Who knows? Maybe Gerrard figured it out or maybe he just caught on to one of the only things that actually rattled an otherwise steady firefighter? Whether he thought it was true or not.
Either way, Sal knew but for years, played his own game. Whether for his own entertainment or some twisted form of protection.
Depends on your interpretation of Sal, really.
And there we go! That’s my thoughts on Sal knowing. I’m always willing to answer questions about this headcanon and others.
Y’all aren’t even prepared for my super sad fic starring this theory. I haven’t even convinced myself to write it yet 🤣😭
Enjoy!

Ok, we’re diving into one of my headcanons about Tommy Kinard and that is regarding his friendship/working relationship with Sal DeLuca.
As a reminder, Sal DeLuca was a firefighter at the 118 during Hen Begins and Bobby Begins Again. He was suspended/reassigned during Bobby Begins Again for blatant disrespect of Bobby and rash calls. He was also part of the Good Ole Boys club and went along with Gerrard’s behavior. He was an established asshole.
Now, moving on.
Now, and keep in mind that I didn’t watch the begins episodes again looking for this, Tommy and Sal had at least a friendly working relationship. Sal does tease Tommy on several occasions about being gay, even though we know Tommy wasn’t out at the time. Sal was simply doing it to be an ass. I’ll reevaluate when I rewatch the begins episodes, but while I don’t think they were close, I think they were at least work friends.
Now, my headcanon concerning this is that Tommy, at some point when at the 118, had a reluctant crush on Sal.

What’s my reasoning behind it? Well, for one, Sal was certainly an asshole but he was visually pretty decent. Beyond that, this goes fully into my interpretation of Tommy.
I think that when Tommy joined the 118, he was fresh out of the army. And when he went into the army, he was coming off of an unstable childhood. So I think he joined the 118 and was still looking for his footing. I’m not sure if Sal was technically supposed to be there before him, as he wasn’t in Chim Begins, but he seems older and more experienced, so we’re going to say he was. I think he likely latched onto Sal as a grounding point and took his cues on how to act from Sal. What was accepted, how he could blend in, etc.
Personally I don’t think Tommy even acknowledged to himself that he was gay until much later on.
I also personally think that Tommy was a self loathing closeted man. I wouldn’t be surprised if he latched onto a man who treated him how he thought he deserved to be treated. Even if Sal didn’t consciously know or know for sure that Tommy was gay, he still teased him at least twice blatantly about it and did so in front of the rest of a very repressive station. Seeing as neither Tommy or Sal were featured mains, we can imagine it probably happened a lot more off screen. Sal expressed general disdain for something that was fundamental to Tommy so I think Tommy latched onto that because he too hated himself.
And maybe, subconsciously, there was something about liking someone unattainable.
So yeah, that’s a decent summary of my headcanon. Is this a headcanon that I think links up with canon? Nope, I’d be surprised. But I think this is a headcanon I’d use in fics and you’re welcome to use it if you want!
Now, the headcanon I have about Sal knowing….👀👀👀👀 that’s a whole other matter.
If anyone wants to know other headcanons or want me to explore this more, please ask!
