“There is a time in life when you expect the world to be always full of new things. And then comes a day when you realize that is not how it will be at all. You see that life will become a thing made of holes. Absences. Losses. Things that were there and are no longer. And you realize, too, that you have to grow around and between the gaps, though you can put your hand out to where things were and feel that tense, shining dullness of the space where the memories are.”

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

adhd writer struggles
my editor: Can you describe this apartment building a bit more?
me, after falling down a research rabbit hole: Did you know in South Korea there's been this upsurge in corporations making these high-rise luxury apartments with ridiculous word salad names that're almost always a combination of a company brand name and a random English or French word, in an attempt to make it sound more fancy and attractive to consumers.

Sometimes you come up with the best ideas for your story while doing something else. Your subconscious mind needs to process things. So have some fun, and allow your subconscious to work, allow it to fix that plot, or flat dialogue, or long, boring paragraph.

schrodinger's chekhov's gun. a detail in a story that looks like it should have some big payoff but it's too early to tell if that's relevant or if the author just has a passion for lovingly describing guns.

“You’re doing this to yourself, you know,” the shade says.
They smile, but it’s more like a show of teeth, eyes too wide for it to look right.
“Hell is supposed to be other people. But there’s no one else here. Right now, hell is just you.”
The inside of his throat is a ruin, his vocal cords reduced to pulp. If he could, he would ask:
Then what are you supposed to be?

The story goes, there once was a woman who did not eat anything. Her husband was rich, but selfish. He despised spending money on anything that wasn’t for himself and resented having to feed her. So she ate as little as possible and never asked for anything. She was a hard worker, and never complained.
One day though, the little she did require got to be too much for him, and his patience wore out. So he buried an ax in the back of her head.
But she survived.
The wound, however, did not heal.
Inside of the gash on the back of her skull grew teeth, a tongue, and a hunger that demanded to be fed.
She ate through his stores of rice. She ate his servants. And in the end, she devoured him as well.
