How did you become a mechanical engineer if you don’t mind me asking

Hey there! I have a brother that’s a tiny bit older than me. When he was looking at uni and what to major in, he chose engineering and my parents seemed extremely proud and supportive of him. I have a much better relationship with my parents now, but at the time I very much felt like the ignored bastard child, so a year or so later when it was time for me to start choosing a major, I wanted to do the same thing he did. Instead of getting the positive attention my brother got, my parents…. Were very discouraging. There was a heavy implication both of women shouldn’t be in stem and that I, as an individual, was not good enough to be an engineer. My parents repeatedly tried to push me into journalism or marketing instead. That just fueled my spite to do it anyway 😘

(Keep in mind that I’ve always liked robots and space and stuff like that, and I was already on course to take the highest math and physics classes my high-school offered. This wasn’t just like…. An out of the blue field I had no interest or qualifications for. But the disparity in treatment between me and my brother was the biggest factor.)
