I can't believe I had to wait until season four to see stranger things expand on the part i always found the most interesting, and then they managed to be so fucking predictable and anti-climactic about it.
#at least jamie campbell bower is pretty#that almost makes it redeemable. almost.#stranger things#and just in case:#spoilers#had this in my drafts since i finished pt 1 and figured i should just post it already

read your take on NWH with JJJ; expecting the MCU to mirror the comics is the worst way to watch those movies imo. NWH in particular is more about the legacy of the movies, not the comics. the Alex Jones thing was clearly a way to bring a contemporary perspective to spider-man's relationship with the press. it's not even an original take; that iteration first appeared in the ps4 game. and "a joke that won't be funny in five years?" like the casual homophobia and sexism of the raimi trilogy? 🙄🙄
Thanks for bringing back my favorite bad faith reading of any MCU criticism, which is "If you point out that this is a poor interpretation of the source material it means you expect the movies to be a 1:1 adaptation of the comics." Re: a contemporary take on Spider-Man's relationship with the press, there's nothing original about his actual relationship to the press as depicted in the movies. It's always been antagonistic, that's not new. What is new is depicting JJJ as an out-and-out untrustworthy source instead of as a complex character, presenting him as a conspiracy theorist who peddles lies and sponsored products. In a genre that has always depicted journalism as equivalent to superheroics -- there is a reason both Peter Parker and Clark Kent work for newspapers -- I think it's more interesting to look at how the MCU treats one of comics' most famous journalists, makes him inherently untrustworthy, and then to remember that parent company Disney's relationship with the press is so fraught that they tried to blacklist the Los Angeles Times. They have a vested interest in presenting the press as scummy and untrustworthy.
#breaking my hiatus for this and this alone#anti journalism propaganda is dangerous and shouldn't be normalised#anti mcu#anti disney#j. jonah jameson#spiderman
