ability analysis for best boy chuuya?

Chuuya… his Ability is fine, but his connection with Corruption is still confuses me, but I will try my best.

(Here we see all the glory of the entity of destruction shrunk into 160 cm vessel. I’m sorry, but whenever I see Chuuya I am reminded of Edward Elric from FMA and I just can’t help but to jab at their height lol)

Nakahara Chuuya, one of the Executive of Port Mafia and also their strongest fighter. His Ability, For the Tainted Sorrow, allows him to manipulate the gravity of everything he touches. Just like Dazai, his Ability needs a direct contact but unlike Dazai, his is more versatile.

…is it because he keeps controlling gravity that his growth spurt is so dismal?

His Ability is kind of simple in that the moment he touches an object/person/everything he is able to manipulate gravity unto that object/person/everything. His gravity not only works on others, but also on himself. With his Ability, he can stand on the ceilings or even run across buildings like it was the flat road. Which he usually applies on his motorcycle.

While he needs to touch something to affect them with his Ability, unlike Dazai he doesn’t have to keep contact. He can pick up a massive boulder and fling it across fields or even use his Ability to shot bullets faster than normal guns. It is unclear whether his Ability will stay with something he had touched, but seeing that he never reused something he had used before (the boulder, bullets, and even a certain monster) maybe he can’t affect them again unless he retouch it. This can means a few things :

1) There is a time limit in how long his Ability can affect things.

2) He can only manipulate gravity on another object one time and he had to retouch them to manipulate it again.

3) There is a distance limit to how far he can throw an object and still had it in his control.

I’m not an expert in physics and even what I had learned from high school is already slipping from my mind so if anyone wants to correct me feel free please.

So far what we have seen from how Chuuya uses his gravity manipulation is how science proposes artificial gravity using magnetism (like how Chuuya sticks to the ceilings), mass manipulation (making objects heavier or lighter), and linear acceleration (throwing boulders and bullets). We have never seen Chuuya creates gravity balls like black hole outside of Corruption, but we didn’t know if these are the only things Chuuya can use his gravity manipulation.

Chuuya is also an experienced fighter and really able to bring his Ability to fight well. As seen by the panel below, he can kicks the enemy and then using that touch to manipulate gravity on his enemy and send them flying.

This ease in using his Ability means that he doesn’t have to actively think how to use them, using his Ability to him just as easy as moving his arms and legs.

As we are going to skip Corruption for now, let’s go for his strength, weakness, and in combat shall we?

Chuuya, as the Mafia’s strongest fighter, is truly a fearsome opponent. His experiences from multitudes of battles and courage gives him confidence that is given. He goes straight into battle without fear because there are few enemies that can survive against him.

We see Chuuya favoring to use martial arts in battle (even though he carries a knife with him always), this means he is always in close combat with his enemy. This can make people with Ability that also favor them in close combat fight him with all their strength, but Chuuya gravity manipulation enables him to use the battlefield even unknown to him to his favor. For Chuuya, no place is not a flat ground. He can fights just fine in collapsing building or ruins, field hazard also means nothing to him. His mass manipulation also means that he can just make himself as light as feather and run across a field of mines without triggering them, and if he did trigger them, he just need to leave behind gravity equal to his mass and get away quickly. Also, fighting in close combat is actually detriment for the enemy because Chuuya can freely touch them and then invoking gravity to keep his opponent in place or just send them flying.

But not only martial arts, Chuuya can also use any kind of object as projectiles. Imagine getting pelted with hand grenades that is shot at you with the speed faster than bullets. In terms of sheer destruction alone, Chuuya currently holds the first ranking as the strongest of Ability user in Yokohama (unless the Hunting Dogs somehow able to beat him in that category)

Chuuya’s weakness… now this is hard. Even when his Ability is nullified by Dazai, he can still use his martial arts to beat Dazai into pulp. Also the fact that Dazai has to constantly touch him is kind of impossible since Chuuya is so strong and agile that Dazai won’t be able to keep hold on him. If anything, his easy-to-trigger petty button whenever someone mentioned Dazai is his only weakness, as someone can manipulates him into a trap (like how Ranpo cleverly defeats Chuuya even when he doesn’t have any Ability).

I wonder what happens if anyone hold Chuuya’s hat hostage.

If Atsushi and Dazai work together, Atsushi to keep Chuuya busy while Dazai somehow finds a way to keep nullifying Chuuya’s Ability, then maybe they have a chance. But that is it, people need to work together to hold Chuuya down. Unless that someone is Dazai and Ranpo, who are cunning enough to tap dance with Chuuya’s berserk button and manipulates him into their own favorable situation.

Chuuya is similar to Atsushi in that while their Ability is so strong, it’s easy to mess with their minds. Akutagawa falls to this category as well, although he probably will go berserk and kill everyone.

Now, let’s talk a bit about Corruption. Mind you, most of this is just speculations.

Corruption, according to Fifteen novel, is the true form of the entity called Arahabaki that is sealed inside Chuuya. Corruption is kind of upgraded version of For the Tainted Sorrow but also uncontrollable. Unlike Chuuya’s original Ability, Corruption doesn’t need touch. It affect everything surrounding Chuuya to an extent. It’s so strong that he can create a gravity dense ball like black hole and hurled it to the enemy or he can manipulates a goddamn tall building that he uses like a bat to smack a dragon on it’s face (Dead Apple). Chuuya can also fly or hover in the sky when he is using Corruption. This means he can just bombard the enemy from above when he is using Corruption, but since his mind is non existant at this point, Chuuya’s trained martial arts is gone and replaced with just berserk beast that destroy everything in front of him. He also doesn’t bother to dodge or shield himself, truly like a berserker.

(Yeah, Chuuya turns into a kaijuu so he can fights another kaijuu. Is this really BSD? Or this series somehow turns into a freaking Godzilla series?)

However, because using Corruption is the same as relinquishing control to Arahabaki, Chuuya is unable to control it. He will keep fighting and destroying everything until his life burns out. At that time, only Dazai with his nullifying Ability can stop him and returns him to his senses. There is a theory that if Chuuya became Fukuzawa’s subordinate he maybe able to control Corruption, but I am not really convinced. Unlike Atsushi and Kyouka whose Ability, while sentient, is still an Ability, Chuuya’s Arahabaki is said to be the god of destruction. It is unclear if Fukuzawa’s Ability will let Chuuya control Arahabaki. Although Dazai’s Ability does work on Corruption. Hmm… maybe I will expand this on another post.

(Weirdly, it is said that Chuuya is unable to gain control back on his own and his mind is gone when using Corruption, but he can still scream Dazai’s name in Dead Apple when he is choking a dragon with a building and gain enough sense to smack Dazai in the face. I don’t know if this means that Chuuya is gaining better control or just fanservice?)

Hmm… I think that’s all I can talk about Chuuya. Chuuya’s Ability is versatile, unlike a more too offense oriented like Atsushi. Even without using it for battle, Chuuya can uses it to scout on difficult places, holding enemies down in place, moving things quicker and easier with his Ability, and as support for his teammates to move around. He can battle at any range (close combat, mid, and even long range) without any problem. Heck, if Chuuya changes job to delivery guy he will be highly sought after by people.
