Who gets ALS?

In the U.S., approximately 6,000 people get diagnosed with ALS each year.  Most people who develop the disease develop it between the ages of 40-70. However, it is possible for people younger than that to develop the disease.  It is just more common for people to develop the disease as they grow older.  50% of people who are diagnosed with the disease live 3 or more years after they have been diagnosed.  20% of people live 5 or more years, and 10% of people affected will live more than 10 years with the disease.

Something that upsets me with the USC ice bucket challenge is that people are forgetting what it was originally for. Yes, i 100% agree with mental health, but people can get HELP for mental health. The 2014 ice bucket challenge for ALS should still be mentioned. ALS isn’t a joke nor a trend and should be recognized as an issue that needs to be dealt with. Now people see the ice bucket challenge as a trend which is why it’s important to not stop talking about ALS.
