Hey Riverdale peeps, So I’m taking a sort of hiatus from this fandom and I’ll be over on my secondary @harrowingwoods​. I’m posting turn of the century stuff (Late 90s - 2000s) there and kinda letting this sit because some stuff involving this show has just got me down. May come back for Season 5, I might not.

I love all your faces and sending all my good vibes to you guys. Pray for Lebanon. Stand beside your black brothers and sisters and let them know they can count on you. Treat the world with the kindness you’d like to see. Wear a mask.

This is just an opinion, so ignore the fact that my tired ass wrote this like its objective. It isn’t. I don’t know. But... I feel like Riverdale was doomed to fail the minute that the execs and writers stopped writing for Gen Z and started writing ‘because that’s what’s popular’. Meanwhile, their statistics about what’s popular are based on teen dramas from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. As a millennial, I didn’t want to see another Gossip Girl or Dawson’s Creek and those shows only work now as nostalgia binges, not as some sort of cultural zeitgeist piece. 

Hell, the only reason Glee is still relevant is because the over-the-top drama fit in to the over-the-top show. But Riverdale started as a show that was trying to be something that wasn’t quite what we had seen before and, at some point, we lost the integrity of the characters so the integrity of the show went with it.

People watched Riverdale for the promise of diversity and inclusion that has slowly began to feel more and more like a cheap pawn to get their attention. Doesn’t help that one of the executive producers also produced Dawson’s Creek, I’m sure, which was about as diverse and inclusive as repackaged wonderbread. It’s why the dwindling promise is pissing a lot of people off, because it’s been replaced with needless ship drama that could easily be spent giving screen time to non-white or LGBTQ+ characters.

I’m tired. I’m rambling. Don’t listen to me, I just needed to put this out there before I stayed up another night thinking about it.

During Pride month, I wanted to share something that’s dear to my heart. I’m asexual and I stumbled across this tweet that shares a really helpful blog that highlights stories of and resources for POC Asexuals. It includes art, videos, media and more, curated by the wonderful Queer as Cat. Since I can’t share via twitter, I thought I’d move the information here for those who might need it.

Asexuality is already a place where you fight for visibility, so I wanted to show some love to my Ace POC buddies out there. I’ll keep my eye out and elaborate on this post with more resources when I find them!  You’re valid. Happy pride to my purple hearts.

Willie Simmons has spent 38 years in prison for a $9 robbery. He had two prior convictions similar to robbery that he served time for. He was prosecuted under the Alabama Habitual Offender law and was given a life sentence for his third strike - stealing 9 (NINE) dollars. Sign his petition. 

Breonna Taylor was killed by police who were conducting an UNANNOUNCED drug raid, where they gave no request to enter. They bashed her door and entered, shooting her EIGHT times. They were in the WRONG HOUSE. 

George Floyd was killed by a police officer who knelt on his neck and suffocated him to death, after George pleaded with the officer and told him he couldn’t breathe. The officer had pulled him from where he sat in his car on an alleged FORGERY. You can also text “FLOYD” to 55156

ARREST THE OFFICERS WHO KILLED GEORGE FLOYD: The main police officer who murdered George is being kept in PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. You probably have heard he was arrested, but this is NOT TRUE. He was placed under PROTECTIVE custody because of the riots and “threats” on his life.

Okay Bernie stans.

I need you all to prepare yourselves to vote for Biden in November.  

I’m not happy about it either.  I wanted Elizabeth Warren to destroy Trump on the debate floor.  I wanted to watch her shatter the glass ceiling.  I wanted student loan forgiveness, Medicare for All, and refugee and immigrant protections.

But I’m not going to get that.  So I am going all in for Biden.

This can no longer be a matter of “well if I don’t get my way THEN I’M NOT VOTING”.  I’d hoped you all learned your lessons four years ago, but from what I’ve seen on social media, that’s not been the case.  Biden is not ideal but he is better than the alternative.  He is a Democrat who will continue Obama’s legacy.  And you have a shot in hell of getting progressive movements like Medicare for All under a blue majority Congress; we do not have that under Trump.  

Biden is more willing to listen to the progressive factions of the Democrat party than Trump is.  We will get shit done under him.    

We cannot survive a second term of Trump.  I need you all to hold your noses, put on your big girl pants, and deal with it.  Prepare to vote for Biden.

Young Black boy killed during Protests by White Supremacist!!!

Black Protester Shot to Death Outside Omaha Bar

A young black protester was shot dead outside a bar in Omaha as unrest across the nation engulfed the Nebraska city, by white supremacist Jake Gardner.

The victim was identified as 22-year-old James Scurlock, whose father called for justice as the city braced for another night of chaos.

“Last night I lost a son, my wife lost a son, my kids lost a brother,” the grieving dad, who has the same name, told reporters at the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation Visitors Center, “His daughter lost a father. All because he decided to protest against racism.“

Unfortunetly, Prosecutors in Omaha, Nebraska, said Monday that the white bar owner will not face charges because in their minds “video evidence shows he acted in self defense” even though he had aimed the gun to a crowd of unarmed protesters and James only got involved to protect anyone form getting shot, resulting in losing his life, as both videos here show: video1/video2

The murderer, Jake Gardner, also owns 2 bars one of which was closed down because of an outpour of reviews stating they woulf often refuse service to black people and were known as violent racists. His other bar seems to be having the same issues.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: Call county Attorney Don Kleine and Mayor Stotgert. Demand justice and demand Jake Gardner be held responsible for the murder!!

Happy International Women’s Day! (March 8th) [insp.]

YES. THIS. 

“White characters get killed off more!”

“Hiram and Veronica have lots of screen time!”

“They’re not main characters so they don’t need screen time anyway!”

“White characters are criminals/villains too!!”

“Josie got her own show!1!1″

Those aren’t the point. The point is that every single non white character has either been written as a stereotype, or been mistreated/had no care put into their character.

Even Veronica can’t have a storyline that doesn’t revolve around a man.

A woman of colour who is one of the MAIN protagonists is still not given a storyline outside of her boyfriend or fighting with her father.

Toni has been the white sidekick for both Jughead and Cheryl.

Cheryl as a white character has been used as a tool to contribute not 1, not 2, but 5 black characters being mistreated whether it’s the storyline that wrote them out of the show, she stalked, falsely blamed for her stalking, or became her shadow despite being her love interest.

Jughead being the leader of the serpents would have been fine, yeah sure he’s a main character. But the rest of the characters other than his father and girlfriend are not white. And they’re just used as background characters who could have given the gang more depth and a more impactful storyline. Yes Sweet Pea and Fangs aren’t main, but their only storyline’s outside of being Jughead’s side kicks have been Fangs being falsely accused of murder and joining a cult that harvested one of his organs, and Sweet Pea and him murdering a man.

Betty had a mental break and tried to boil Chuck when all of his white peers inn the football team were also being sexist dicks too. 

Asha and Hayley were written out without any explanation and didn’t have any way of knowing how to answer fans questions as to why, or when they would come back Valerie and Melody disappeared for no reason and with no explanation other than laziness and lack of care on the show’s part.

Josie did not get her own show. Riverdale didn’t want to give her an actual storyline so they wrote her onto Katy Keene, another show where the main character is a white woman and yeah maybe Josie has more of a main role, but downplaying what Riverdale did to her because she “got her own show” isn’t accurate. They used her to launch a spin off. She was the familiar face to make people watch. 

It doesn’t matter how bad or how many white characters are also given shit storylines or are the villains, when every non white character has been mistreated by the writing and the show as a whole. Every single one.

The show should be accountable for every shitty thing they’ve done to all characters/actors we all saw how petty the writers are to their white guest stars, but if your automatic response when people criticise/point out the shit the show does to POC is to defend the white actors and characters…you’re missing the actual point which is ALL the POC involved in this show have been treated shitty, especially the black cast members.
