It’s so cool to see this last run at the US Open Serena Williams is making. 40 years old, a mom, 365 matches won in her career, 23 grand slam titles, chasing a record tying 24th. The energy level at her matches has been electric, as she’s played well and everyone knows that’s it on her legendary career if she loses. It reminds me of 2006 when I used to shoot the Open and it was Andre Agassi’s last tournament before retiring. He made it to the third round and each match was more exciting than the last. One night afterwards Andre’s dad was riding the media bus back to Manhattan (for some reason 🤷🏼‍♂️). He was quite the character, holding court at the front of the bus with anyone who would listen. I remember him saying he wished he had introduced Andre to golf instead, so we would have had a longer career than having to retire at 36! About last night. Double A band decided it was time to take it to the streets or more specifically the park. But 2 mins into setting up they got a very kind invitation from nearby restaurant owner Frank Ottmanelli to setup in front of his place instead, turning what was to be a busking expedition into a gig! They played their 8 song set 4 times over 3.5 hrs. Faces were melted. Minds were blown. Cash was counted. So sad to hear the news of the sudden passing of Tony “The Goose” Siragusa at age 55. He was a beloved larger than life character who I had the pleasure of spending a day with a few years ago to shoot the cover of his book at his home in NJ. He wasn’t into any of the cover concepts we came in with and suggested I just shoot him while he told stories from his NFL playing career with the Colts and Ravens. So that’s what we did. I can assure you the stories were insane and not PG rated! Hilarious to say the least. When we had what we needed for the cover, I pitched him one other idea I was really hoping he would go for. There is a famous picture of Picasso with bread hands by Robert Doisneau from 1952. It was also brilliantly re-imagined by @the_chris_buck with Steve Martin a few years ago. My idea was to shoot Tony in a similar way, but with goose feet instead of bread hands, as he was “The Goose”. I had gone out on a limb and had some Tony sized goose feet made by prop stylist extraordinaire @stylistlizzy (at considerable expense…) with the hope that he would do it. So I launched into my pitch bout Picasso and Doisneau and blah blah. He just stopped me and said “You wanna make me look like Picasso? Let’s do it”.
