I love new adventures, especially because they allow me to tell stories that are new to me. My friend Anna Hovet mentioned to me that her family has been farming for generations up near Grand Forks, North Dakota. Part of their farm grows sugar beets. Harvesting the beets is a 24-hour-a-day operation that lasts roughly ten days at the beginning of October. I was intrigued and sold, so I packed up my truck and sleeping bag and set out for a road trip to experience the life of harvesting sugar beets. What I learned and witnessed was more than just the operation of bringing in the yield of beets; it was the family passing down the traits of the farm to the next generation. The bond and support that given by everyone on the team to achieve its main goal spoke volumes of the character and "Midwestern" morals I was surrounded by. This is as real as it gets and allowed me to appreciate what is important - family, teamwork, and tradition.
