Father’s Day at the Finch House

You could say Jem Finch was a bit of a perfectionist when it came to getting Father’s Day gifts. Weeks before the day came, he was constantly thinking about what to get Atticus. Would he get something? Would he make it himself? He wanted to make sure it showed how much Atticus meant to him. How much he loved his dad.

Every gift was well thought out, complete with a card in handwriting that tried to be neat, ending in “Love, Jem” with a dumb little heart or something.

Happy Father’s Day, Atticus. Love, Jem.

Now, his sister never saw those cards. She’d never let him live down being all lovey to his daddy.

But every Father’s Day, just before bed, he would sit outside on the porch with Atticus, up against his side and following along as he read in his deep, comforting voice. He wouldn’t even finish the book before he felt the weight of his son, asleep against him.

Scout, meanwhile, wasn’t nearly as thorough in her gifts. She loved Atticus with all her heart, of course she did, but wasn’t the one for pondering on meaningful gifts. It was usually just a hug and a “I love you”. Until a nagging Jem finally convinced her to get something.

Father’s Day was only a few days away, and Jem was telling Dill about how he finally knew what he was going to get Atticus.

“It’s gonna be the best yet,” He’d mumble with a grin, one that made his eyes all sparkly.

Scout humphed, crossing her arms and leaning against a nearby tree. Right. She was going to get Atticus something. But what? She wasn’t good at that kinda stuff. Jem was. Somehow. But she had to get something!! If she didn’t, Jem would holler about how she ain’t good at keeping her word. Blah blah blah.

The day came, and Jem was still asleep. Atticus was in the kitchen, drinking his coffee. Scout rolled out of bed and quickly got changed, avoiding waking up her brother. Still barefooted, she made her way into the kitchen, clutching something behind her back.

She walked up behind Atticus, quietly tapping his shoulder. When he turned with a raised eyebrow, she held out both her hands.

A mug. A white mug with World’s Best Dad written across it in neat letters.

Her cheeks went slightly pink, and she spoke up softly.

“Happy Father’s Day, Atticus..”

He never did get rid of that mug. Or the drawing of him and Scout, with the same words on it. Or anything else she had gifted him. To him, they were just as important.

That same day, there was a knock at the door. Jem and Scout crashed into one another, racing to see who could get there first. Atticus made it before either of them. As per usual.

The door creaked open, and there stood Dill, his pale face flushed with embarrassment. His hands were dirty and clutching a few daisies in between his small fingers.

Jem cocked his head to the side, and Scout was about to speak up, but stopped herself when Dill held out the flowers to Atticus.

“..Happy Father’s Day, Mr. Finch.. I know ya ain’t my real one.. but.. you’re like one to me.” His voice was quiet, like he was ashamed to be saying anything at all.

There was a moment of silence, before Atticus reached down and gently took the flowers. In his free hand, he took Dill’s trembling hand and led him inside.

Atticus paused, letting Dill run over to Jem and Scout. He looked at the mug. At the daisies. At the handwritten card. And a smile made its way across his face.

“Thank you. All three of you.”
