On my third reread of the 'Shining Diamond Demonic Heartbreak' side story and man, getting Tasuku Karasuma to illustrate it was such a great choice

If this story and his most well known work 'No Guns Life' have anything in common (aside from an gun), it's deffinitely showing how overwhelming a traumatic past can be. The sheer weight that DIO's very nature has even as _someone else's memory_ is almost insane

It's kinda funny but I think out of various media before YuGiOh that have a similar ideas of pharaohs reincarnating and having a bond with their modern equivalent was written by Bram Stoker of all people

Jewel of the Seven Stars (which I had initially only heard of from the OverlySarcasticProductions video on Mummies but have recently stumbled across an audiobook version on spotify) doesn't have a Mummy in the style of a reanimated corpse or the type of rehydrated sorcerer like the film The Mummy (love the Brenden Fraiser version btw) but as a vessel for the spirit of the Pharoah Tera, a lady who was cursed by the priests of her time for misogyny 'profaning against the Gods' so that she would never fully pass on…buuut she herself managed to lay an enchantment that allows her influence the living world for her goal…to find true love after having a resurecction spell cast on her with the implication it'll restore her old body

To that end she lightly possesses or poltergeists people out of her way/into acting in a way that'd aid this plan and even starts to influence her reincarnation, Margaret the super hard crush of the protag Malcom Ross

With one scene in particular standing out, when Margaret is incredibly disturbed and incredulous during a Mummy Unwrapping party (an actual thing that happened in London High Society, god fucking damn my people) with Pharaoh Tera as the mummy in particular

The story ends with the ritual…being deemed a failure, but in a later version of the story (because back then writers could patch in a better ending I guess) it's implied heavily that Margeret and Tera are one in the same and both/the gestalt fusion of the pair are happy being with the slightly himbo-y barrister that is our protag

And for the time, Bram did some fucking RESEARCH! He goes into topics about the Egyptian mumification process that rarely if ever get brought up; how the soul in their view is in multiple parts…granted he left out a step but still, A for fucking effort
