Actually no i DO know. After playing a very good game of twister they'd both slip & collapse at the same time and fall on EACH OTHER right into a kiss and the crowd would either cheer or boo. The Romans and Carthaginians would each insist their generals won by like 0.00001 seconds and a mini riot would probably break out but they'd end up counting it as a tie like it was. I dunno what impact this would have for the war but I do know carthage would never be destroyed in this AU. May add on more later but I've put off answering this ask long enough lol

As both the World Wars and Tolkien recede from living memory I feel like there's room in the fantasy-doorstopper space for someone to do a story about a decaying, hegemonic fantasy nation that's been coasting on an internal narrative about how they beat the dark lord and the evil empire a generation ago, with basically every bad thing that's gone down since then being the result of someone growing up on those stories trying to pattern match whatever bullshit they're about to enact to that last wonderful moment of collective moral clarity
