The Beauty of ItaSaku

I can’t speak for everyone in the fandom, and its late at night and I’m not even sure I’ll be able to convey my thoughts correctly, but I have to try and defend this pairing.

I’m one of those people who have itasaku as their OTP. It was the first pairing I have ever used the word “ship" with. It is my inspiration for looking underneath the underneath. It represents that love is not easy nor kind. But it is love, and it drives two people to do things that they never saw themselves doing; these things are not bad, however, because they strengthen themselves as a person.

But more into that in a second. First, I want to discuss their compatibility.

“They’re not even similar”

They both care about Sasuke and could not kill him because of it, even for the good of their village.

They both want to protect what they love.

They are both stubborn and persistent people.

Neither of them would needlessly kill

Both of them are highly intelligent and rational

They both believe in Naruto

They both do things with the best of intentions, sometimes with negative results.

They care more about the lives of others than of themselves

They would both put their lives in serious danger for the good of others.

“They’re still too different”

There are some differences between them that actually help defend ItaSaku. If you’re an exact replica of your partner..well..that’s kinda weird. One of the best things about this couple is their ability to balance each other out.

Itachi is quiet and keeps thoughts to himself, whereas Sakura is more likely to reveal her opinions and persist on trying to hear his own. This brings out conversation between the two. And unlike whenever Kisame tries to talk to him and makes awkward comments and accusations, Sakura would be more likely to learn more about him as a person.

Itachi is a gentle person. A very deadly person when necessary, but otherwise not so. Which is amusing, when considering sakura punching rocks. But Sakura also has that gentle spirit in her, the loving, tender part of her. It’s a bit different than Itachi, who is very reserved and appears to be emotionless, because Sakura reveals her compassion. She would speak it, and he would show it in his own little ways.

He see’s little good in himself, which is why having someone like Sakura who can see it would be healthy for him. And as for Sakura, she knows she’s better than she used to be and definitely doesn’t need him to constantly compliment her. She has the confidence. But the kinds of things you could see Itachi saying, like how she’s intelligent, determined, and caring, would be nice for her to hear every once in awhile.

Itachi has suffered a lot of hardship. It practically makes all of Sakura’s difficulties rather meaningless and petty. You could argue that this is a reason against the pairing, but I’d like to say differently. First, it would definitely wake her up to the realization that things could be a lot worse for her. She already knows this, I’m sure, but she doesn’t really understand just how well she has it. It’s kind of like an eye-opener to the world and make her appreciate what she has even more. This is also good for Itachi, because he would be seeing the very thing he fought to protect. To him, she is a representation of Konoha. She may not be a textbook definition of shinobi, but she is kind, empathetic, caring, ect. She never had to suffer with the kinds of things he did, and he’s glad for that.

“Itachi is too good for her” We all know Itachi is better in a lot of things than Sakura. Itachi was the prodigy and is pretty much the definition of shinobi. But in any naruto pairing, there’s usually one character “stronger" than the other. So I definitely don’t see that as an argument against the pairing. Besides, it leads to some nice training scenes between the two..

“But he’s akatsuki and she would never..”

Firstly, do you like any of the akatsuki? Chances are if you like naruto you do. Think of that character. Why do you like them?

It may just be some of the following:

Cool

Hot

Badass

Sexy

But I wouldn’t believe you if you said that was the only reason you liked any of the akatsuki. Because the thing about them is that a majority of the people aren’t exactly evil, sadistic, murderous people. The group was created to bring peace to the world. They go about it in a totally wrong way, and some of the people enjoy killing. (Kisame and Hidan). Both of them do have some good traits, they’re simply outweighed by the bad.

Although I do like both of them..this isn’t to defend them so I wont go into that. The biggest point here is that no matter how “scary" itachi may look, it’s quite obvious that he doesn’t go around killing people for fun. If Sakura were to watch him in one serious battle with a whole bunch of people, I think she would see that. Even if you’re anti-Sakura, you have to admit she’s smart. It’s canon. Check the databooks if you must.

She is also not a very judgmental person (anymore). That’s why you see a lot of fanfics of the cliche story where she’s kidnapped by the akatsuki as bait for the kyuubi and ends up learning a lot about the akatsuki as actual people. She definitely goes by her sensei’s words to look underneath the underneath.

She’s one of the only people I can see actually coming close to the truth about the uchiha massacre. Kisame has seen a couple glimpses of the real him, and he’s the “enemy" to Itachi. I can see Sakura using those glimpses and understanding them better.

As long as Itachi isn’t trying to kill her, she’s probably not going to try and kill him. It’s not like she would have just tried to randomly kill Sasori if not for their mission. In fact, if she were to chase Itachi she’d probably use a combination of her words and her fist to get answers about Sasuke or maybe even Naruto depending on the circumstance. Like I stated in their similarities, neither would needlessly kill.

“Okay, so they’re decently compatible and both still alive. I still don’t see it..”

Sakura’s compassion would ultimately lead to her helping him in some way, whether by words, healing, comfort, ect. There would be struggle, and sometimes she would probably want to punch his teeth out for being so silent and confusing. But it’s because she wants to understand. She wants to figure out why he’s so not evil when after everything with Sasuke he just has to be. But he isn’t.

Likewise, Itachi would want to understand her. He is interested in how people work, how the world works, the situation of people, the way they relate to one another. It’s his thing. Sometimes she is obvious, but other times she is confusing. She gets mad for no apparent reason. It’s the things like that which interest him.

There’s also the fact that he can somewhat toy with her, say certain things and hope for the expected reaction. It’s kind of like his version of flirting.

Of course, no matter who makes the first move both of them are probably going to push away from the relationship. Sakura may realize he’s not evil, but he is the enemy. It would take some time until she’s certain and adamant on the fact that he isn’t evil, demanding him to explain it. He never will, which leaves her to figure it out on her own.

Itachi, however, would be the one to really push away and distance himself. It’s been hinted at that he had a lover when he was 13. However, did he really love her? We don’t know the situation for certain. It could be one of the many reasons why this relationship is bad for him. The biggest one, however, is he simply can’t afford the distraction. He can’t afford a reason to want to stay alive. He can’t risk losing all this progress for his little brother. He can’t risk his secret being exposed. He is stubborn.

But so is Sakura. Because you see, she’s already lost love once before. No matter what Itachi does, she’s not going to just give up. She’s going to figure out whats going on. She’ll probably get angry at him for being so self-sacrificing. She’ll pretty much do her best to force him to admit that what they have is real, because she knows it is.

Remember what I said in the beginning. Love is not easy or kind. Love is a struggle. And Itachi’s struggle is between too loves: the love for his brother and the love for Sakura. Their ending can go so many ways. Some happy, some sad. Itachi could end up with both, or he could end up with neither. He could die, he could live.

“Sakura totally just got with Itachi because he’s close enough to Sasuke!”

That is just insulting..to all three of them. If you read carefully, I’ve never even mentioned how Itachi and Sasuke are similar and that draws him to her. I’m going to talk about it in this little section and here only. Because the fact is, its simply not true. Itachi and Sasuke may look similar, but they are two very different people. If you think Sakura is that superficial to just date him because he looks similar..you’re just anti-Sakura and i don’t think any of this will make you change your mind. 

Maybe Sakura likes the mysterious aspect of men (one of the things the two have in common). A lot of men are mysterious though. If she goes more for that type of guy, then that’s that. It doesn’t mean she’s whoring herself out to Sasuke’s brother because they share this trait.

“They’ve never even met!”

This is far from a canon pairing. I’ve never claimed it to be. If you hate all crack pairings, you are truly missing out. But if canon only is your thing, then so be it.

“Anything left to say, oh so amazingly dedicated itasaku fan?”

Okay, so a lot of what I’ve said is actually shown through mere fanart. Sometimes the expressions they wear just scream compatibility and angst. So if you want to understand more about this fandom, that’s a good place to start.

The best place to get lost in the world that is itasaku is in fanfiction. There is some great, extremely well written stories out there for them. I think if you want to start exploring the world of itasaku, then there is one story in particular you should read. It isn’t my favorite and it isn’t the absolute best. But it has a plot that may get you to appreciate the “what if?“ aspect that you’ll want to delve into after it. Before the Dawn by Lady Silvamord

I also enjoyed Bluebird and Lost and Found written by her as well.

There are a lot of great authors out there, but she was where I experienced itasaku fanfiction for the first time. So I suppose her stories hold sentimental value for me.

Oh and, just a final note that I am not anti anyone (except maybe lee..sorry..). Even Sasuke, who pisses me off a lot and kind of killed my favorite character still has a place in my heart. That’s just what Narutos done for me. It pulls on my heartstrings all the time and is something I grew up with. My passion for it is undying. Maybe that’s why the world of crackships interests me, because I already know everything there is to know about what has already happened in naruto and so creating an alternate situation in my head is appealing. It keeps the past alive.

So even if you disagree with everything I’ve said, the very fact that we share the same fandom (Naruto) unites us. Ship wars are silly. Defending your ship in a polite manor, however, is the perfect way to show your love for the characters.

It’s In the Details

Levi and Mikasa’s relationship is one where the development was subtle but stable. It’s also a relationship that had yet to be tested. Up until now, there really wasn’t a conflict between the two, not a real one. Mikasa’s hostility towards Levi in the beginning was one-sided. The small arguments (for the lack of a better term) they had were over before they really started. They always had the same goals and only disagreed on the methods.

With chapter 83, that’s out of the window. For the first time in their relationship, their goals are not just different, they are completely opposite. What better crucible to test their bond?

Let’s all be grateful for the fact that Isayama’s drawing skills have improved as much as they did so we don’t need thought bubbles to interpret the characters’ thoughts and feelings. It’s important because a lot of what passes between Levi and Mikasa is unspoken.

There are so many fantastic details sprinkled throughout the chapter. When Eren asks for the serum for the first time, Levi freezes for a moment.

Why? Well, it’s obvious that he just realized he won’t be able to use this method to save Erwin. So when the chance comes, he seizes it with desperation.

Mikasa’s drawing of the sword is interesting as well. I believe it wasn’t purposeful on her part but rather instinctual. Mikasa (and Levi for that matter, too) tends to use violence as the first response to a threat. She is not angry, though. Eren’s stance and expression are angry - his eyes, his clenched teeth, his words. Levi’s reacting in the same way.

But Mikasa? Her expression isn’t angry. It’s pleading, it’s desperate. She’s crying. And Levi’s response is accordingly gentle. As other people pointed out, this is the first time Levi sees her crying. And this may be just a conjecture on my part but the only time Mikasa cried before when Eren was threatened (in Trost and when RB took Eren), Levi was not there. In the forest chasing Annie, she didn’t cry. When Rod Reiss had Eren and Historia kidnapped and the squad lost the track of them, she didn’t cry. She trusted Levi, in the first instance subconsciously, in the second consciously, to make things better.

Levi is the only person Mikasa acknowledges as her superior in skill. If he’s there, there’s nothing that can stop the two of them together. They will succeed. A lot of this is probably subconscious on Mikasa’s part but she could always rely on his help when she alone wouldn’t be enough.

That’s not the case here. They are on the opposite sides here. Levi won’t back her up this time. She drew her sword because that’s what she does when she’s threatened. But she’s also crying because her safety net is gone, the person she came to rely on to support her is the one facing her this time. And he’s not unaffected either.

Levi knows what Mikasa’s capable of. Seeing her crying throws him for the loop. Anger, he can deal with. He knows how to respond to that. But tears? Mikasa’s tears? With him being the reason for them? No fucking clue.

They both know they are stronger together but that’s not an option here. One of them will be hurt terribly at the end of this. The question is: will the relationship they managed to build survive the fallout? I guess we’ll find out next chapter.

TLDR: This chapter was absolutely crucial to RivaMika relationship and it demonstrated perfectly how far they have come.

Why do you like Rivamika? That's incest, gross.

Alright, my first question and it‘s a shady and anonymous one. Anyways. I will let you off easy because apparently, most people don’t really try to be reasonable, they just find the first argument that would speak against a ship.

First of all: I am not necessarily into Rivamika romantically. I am totally fine with the canon interactions between them because those two are fascinating the way they are. That’s my personal opinion.

To the incest-part:

It’s undeniable that Levi and Mikasa are SOMEWHAT related, but if you actually sit down for like 3 minutes and think about it, than you will realize that they are probably very distantly related.

Half-sibling-theory: Impossible.

We know who Levi’s mother is and that she is an Ackerman. If Levi was Mikasa’s half-brother, Mikasa’s father would have to be Levi’s father, too. Let’s just say that it’s very unlikely that those two Ackermans had a child together, because that would be the evil incest you are so grossed out by, even though Mikasa’s father is probably anything but closely related to Levi’s mother (I will further explain that later). Not to mention the age. Mikasa’s father was probably in his thirties-forties when he died. Levi is said to be in his thirties, so his age could be 25-34 around the time of the death of Mikasa’s parents. Kuchel had Levi when she was in her twenties, presumably. If you do the math, then you will realize that in order of Mikasa’s father being Levi’s father, he would have knocked up an adult woman when he was a young child. Likely? Hell no.

Cousin-theory: Rather unlikely.

Kuchel and Kenny were about the same age, Kenny being a bit older. They were both portrayed as young adults in the flashbacks about Levi’s childhood. I imagine Kenny to be in his early thirties during those flashbacks, because he appears to be in his sixties in the present time. Following my assumptions of the age of Mikasa’s father, there would be a good 20 years age difference between Kenny and Mikasa’s father. That makes it rather unlikely for them to be siblings. Not to mention that there was no sign of living parents of Kenny and Kuchel. We can assume that they were already deceased when Kenny went to find Kuchel, since Kenny had apparently not seen Kuchel in a long time+The only other living relative being his grandfather, no sight of Kenny’s parents+Kuchel working in a brothel in the underground, and the Ackermans generally living dangerous lifes pretty much calls for the theory that their parents had died young, making it unlikely that Mikasa’s father fits in there.

So, based on those LOGICAL assumptions, it’s safe to say that Levi and Mikasa are neither half-siblings, nor cousins.

We have heard Ackerman-backstories about Levi’s family and about Mikasa’s family. Those stories do NOT connect at any point+There have been mentions of other Ackerman-lines in the manga already. The Ackermans are said to be a clan, and apparently, lot’s of you don’t know the difference between a family and a clan. What you call ‘family’ are relatives like: Parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and cousins. A clan however is one fuckin’ giant bunch of people who go way back to one ancestor they share who gave the clan its name (Ackerman in this case). A clan generally tries to keep its name, a good example are the clans of Scotland. In order to call it a clan, there have to be lot’s of generations that spread far, so far that the youngest generations (Levi and Mikasa) are only veeerrry distantly related. And if you are saying now that they HAVE to be closely related in order for both of them to have the Ackerman-super-gen: It’s not the case. If you would have paid attention during biology, you would know that. Just think about blue eyes. Jeez, I better not marry a dude with blue eyes, that’s fucking incest.

The closest thing that Mikasa and Levi probably are, are third or fourth cousins, which is a relation that is hardly considered incest anymore. Did you know that Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley are distant (third, I think) cousins? They still married and had kids.

Seriously guys, a bit of logical thinking is all you need. Or do you like to appear shallow-minded?
