I am so grateful to Brad Simpson for agreeing to talk with me about being a colorist and a freelancer. There was something about the effortless way he peeled back the myth behind working in the comic book industry throughout the conversation.
More importantly he gave honest insights into what it means to be a freelancer. Brad’s colors have brightened and enriched comics like Bloodborne, The Witcher, Stray Dogs, Coffin Bound, Black Stars Above, and so many more.
Starting with his early days as a painter and his transition into comics, Brad shares what he learned, a few things that surprised him about the industry, and illuminates what you can count on and some things that are harder to predict.
If you were thinking about becoming a comic colorist or a freelancer or are curious about what both pursuits are like, I believe you'll enjoy the wisdom that he imparts.
You can also check out his gorgeous portfolio at https://brad20eyesstudio.squarespace.com, keep up with his newest art at https://www.instagram.com/20eyesbrad/ and follow him on Twitter at https://twitter.com/20EyesBrad

Usually, it is in the hopes of taking a single chance as far as it will go. Maybe all the way to the top. The problem with a drawing is that it only happens once. After someone becomes the lucky…

I am immensely grateful that one of my first comic strip writing gigs is for a project with one goal… To bring people happiness.
I couldn’t do it without the wonderful art of Afif Amrullah and the HAPSIE gang!
Greedy Greg is a character always wants more usually at the expense of other people and the environment. Sometimes, even Greedy Greg can learn a lesson
