📚 A fake relationship. A real plea for help. Kenny begins his work-study program. Cartman has suspicions.

Kyle hesitated on the front step of his house, foot frozen mid-step as Charli adjusted the bow in her hair with the kind of mechanical grace that came from not wanting to think too hard about something. Not today. Not about the lie they were about to tell. Not about the way his jacket still smelled like her shampoo. 

“Wait,” His voice came out a little too quick and too decisive, like he was trying to steer the moment before it slipped out from under him. 

Charli blinked at him, her hand pausing on the strap of her backpack. There was always a beat of confusion when Kyle shifted into decisive mode, like even she didn’t quite know what version of him she’d get. 

He held up a single wireless earbud, dangling it between two fingers like an offering. She stared at it before cautiously accepting. 

He stuck the other one in his own ear, hit play on his phone, and the muffled thump of a bass-heavy song started bleeding through the shared silence between them. 

He held out his hand, the movement oddly gentle for someone with a habit of vibrating with righteous fury. 

“We’ve gotta sell it, right?” He said with a smirk full of false confidence. 

She hesitated, like the gesture was something far more loaded than it should’ve been. 

And it was. 

Her fingers hovered a second too long before curling into his. Warm. Soft. Still tense, but her grip was there.

Kyle didn’t breathe for a second.

He nodded, and they stepped out together as if something dangerous had been quietly set in motion. 

The bus smelled like farts and old Fruit Gushers. Charli hated it already. 

The ride was quiet. Too quiet, considering the circus of a day ahead. Kyle scrolled through his phone with deliberate distraction, thumbing past memes and TikToks and a group chat with the guys that he couldn’t quite focus on. Charli’s head dropped onto his shoulder like a slow falling weight, and it made his spine straighten instinctively.

Her eyes slipped closed. She let herself rest. 

It shouldn’t have meant anything. But it did. 

The bus vibrated beneath them with its usual jerky ass rhythm, the morning sun struggling to warm the cracked windows. Most kids were half-asleep, rushing homework due in 20 minutes, or on their phones like it was a coping mechanism. But Kenny, hunched in his seat near the back, wasn’t half-asleep. He was wide awake. 

And smirking. 

Charli’s head was on Kyle’s shoulder.

She wasn’t twitching or faking it either. Her whole body had gone soft and slack, like she actually felt safe or some shit. And Kyle? That idiot was sitting there like he’d just been knighted, holding perfectly still with this tortured little expression like if I move, she’ll evaporate and I’ll die.

It was comedy gold.

Kenny cracked his knuckles, took a quick photo with the volume off, and dropped it straight into the group chat.

how do you get people to read your fics with OC characters?

I'm not sure I have cracked the code yet. Here's what I got so far:

Enthusiasm. This is pretty obvous, but probably the most important thing! If you aren't excited by your OCs other people won't be either. Stay goal oriented. What do you like about your OCs? Why do you want other people to connect with your characters? What do you hope to accomplish by putting this character out in the world?

2. Make them actual 3 dimensional characters! Give them depth. Know things about them that won't even make it to the page. If you're using an OC with an existing property, try to make sure there isn't a tonal clash with the source material or the story you're telling. One trick I was taught - Cast your characters. If you can't see an action or line of dialogue coming from the actor you picked while editing, it's probably OOC.

3. Keep most of the focus on canon characters. At least in the beginning. In You Could Be My Muse the focus is on the bet between Kenny and Kyle, not April. Once I had people on board, we get more into the Smut Club (or how Kyle sees them), April's best friend Leigh via Kenny etc. In Warm Blood I introduced the guys first. When Kenny is dead and when the focus shifts to Martine I tried to balance it out with a flashback about Martine and Kenny. The audiecne knows Kenny's not really dead, but she doesn't. It was a way to balance out the narrative and get a little more information aout what their friendship was like before the story kicked off. For another example of this, let's look at some script reports for Charli's spec script. Charli has 10 scenes where she's a speaking character and Kyle has 23. The A-Plot isn't about Charli, it's about Kyle's reaction to her.

4. Supplemental information. This can be artwork, voice mockups, character profiles, Q&As etc. Anything to help your audience get to know them better.

5. Promotion!! Okay, I am one of those people that feels lame promoting my stuff at every opportunity. I try not to go overboard, just do links and stuff when it comes up... Unless it's something like this with examples or someone is specifically asking about my OCS. Ufortunately fo my comfort, it's a very effective way to expose your work to new audiences.

The first arc took a long time because I was creating every character model, assets and background. That's what took up most of the time. the last two weeks or so was spent perfecting the panel sizing for tumblr, debating on borders vs no borders, drop shadows on the panels (which I might go back and add still idk) and lots of other little details. There is actually a panel of Wendy falling I'm going to go back and add. I just couldn't get it to look right and I had a deadline so it was axed.

The timeframe for the next act is for delivering the story in a concise, readable way, that looks good, stays on model and has lots of wiggle room for me to fix any unknown problems (like the Wendy panel) that sound great on paper but are more difficult to get down in practice.

when is act 2 dropping?

Unknown right now. Probably May 2nd.

Act two is gonna be longer and introduce the Charli/Kyle dynamic (so much arguing!) and begin Kenny's arc with Sabrina, Ryan and Assad.

Sorry, it's taking me a while to finish my requests! I have been working on my comic so I can get it out by April 4th! 😭

By the way, I loved this one! I think I kinda wanna draw the main four as Fall Out Boy now? But I realize that's just me mashing my hyperfixations together.

Um, I'm not sure what the crux of your position is. It has the South Park art style because I wanted it to look like an episode.

The story is original.

All the art (including the character models, rando assets and backgrounds) are original insofar as I made them. I am using Inkscape, so I made models of all the characters as posable SVG files.

The backgrounds and random assets (books, furniture, etc) have been the most time consuming - Lots of individual pieces that need to come together just right.

(Kyle's attic is a big part of the story, and that's the background I am working on right now.)

I know people have complained about how long it's taking but the show has a full art team (that built up a library of assets and background over 25 years) and I'm just a girl who wants to tell a good story. And I'm starting from scratch.

ACT ONE STARTS: April 4, 2025.

Kyle's life is thrown into chaos when his family temporarily takes in Charli, a sharp-tongued, Haitian-Jewish girl with no patience for his attitude. Meanwhile, Kenny tries to win over a fiery chef's brigade, testing his skills and resilience.

Kyle and Charli begin a fake relationship to fend off school drama and unwanted advances while unresolved tension sparks between them.

With Cartman scheming, a winter dance looming, and school gossip at an all-time high, Kyle and Kenny must step up—one to protect his heart and the other to prove his worth. Can Kyle overcome his insecurities and admit his feelings for Charli before she leaves? Or will their story end in the same chaos it began?
