okay. listen. I try not to be pedantic about this sort of thing but it’s starting to get on my nerves. the wire mother offers milk but not comfort. the cloth mother offers comfort but not milk. if something is comforting, fun, or otherwise compelling, but lacks substance, that is the cloth mother. if something is boring or unpleasant but has substance, that is the wire mother.

Sinners was a entirely perfect movie, but I needed more scenes of Pearline beating the shit out of Remmick Final Girl style. Yes! She is scared! Yes! She is bleeding out! But she is going to fuck up this pasty vampire until the sun goes UP!
YES
Honestly I just want more Pearline in general
The more I think about her and her place as one of two unhappily married wives--and such a young girl!--going out of her way to pursue passions in amorous and artistic ways, clearly setting her up as what any other mainstream movie would frame as a throwaway temptress or bastardized Coppola!Lucy figure, only for Sinners to make her a spontaneously occurring heroine who left such an impact on Sammie after that one single night together and her losing her humanity to try and protect him... UGH
She and Annie carry so much trope-smashing weight as characters. Annie is the subverted Van Helsing, the Matriarch > Patriarch, Hoodoo and pre-Christian understanding > Static/forced Christianity, etc. But Pearline hits me in the heart as someone who simultaneously mourns for Book!Lucy Westenra being forever wedged into a slutshamed role that isn't hers, and seethes over every story that goes out of its way to punish sexually or creatively powerful women for the same traits that would merely be seductive and roguish in male characters. Pearline is a casualty in Remmick's attack, but she is not a throwaway harlot meant to Teach Sammie a Lesson about Promiscuous Women, she's a girl who had enough sterling character in her to risk her life saving Sammie from a demon; saving the boy she had made love and music with for only a few hours. She paid the price for it and we react with the same pain as Sammie, who cries out her name with the kind of telltale heartbreak that hints at something deeper than mere attraction having already grown for her.
Pearline's last human actions were to blast Remmick with a shotgun, slam a stake through his back, and draw his snapping teeth to her and away from Sammie. And then, finally, to weep at Sammie to run.
Pearline, Pearline.
Sigh.
But! Circling back to the happier image of Remmick getting his ass kicked, I would love to see all the Club Juke last stand humans just wrecking him as a group activity

It's actually funny how humans decided "fuck living in caves with all these creepy crawlies", got out of caves, built houses that have all the nice parts of a cave without any of the yucky parts, and then all the little bugs and spiders and other creepy crawly creatures that used to also live in caves thought "sweet, new and improved caves" and moved right back in with us.

I'm keeping an eye out for heat stroke in my area and I can't figure out what a full body flush would look like on dark skin since all the pictures are just fake training pictures. Anyone have video/pics of a heat stroke flush on black skin?

If there’s a piece of writing you love, that makes you wish you had the ability to do what it does, the tools you're looking for are inside the story itself. Fiction is rarely mysterious in how it works. All you have to do is pay attention with the right mindset.
What you’re looking for is cause and effect, set-up and pay off. What does that piece of dialogue set up a) within the scene and b) later in the narrative? What purpose does this moment serve for the story as a whole? Can you identify the turning points within the scene and the turning points in the larger narrative? How do they fit together? You’ll find these things tend to fall into general patterns. Don’t get distracted by focusing on character details, analysis, or speculation! Fandom tends to overemphasize character to the exclusion of everything else. You probably already know how to analyze characters, but how much time do you spend thinking about the mechanics of the narrative? If you can figure out what makes the stories you love work, you can teach yourself to do any kind of storytelling you want to.
