hi there! I see sometimes you say you don't feel like Isayama likes Eren at all and I want to ask what give you that impression?

Has Isayama ever said anything positive about Eren?

Anyway, @etoincognito  wrote a really good thread on twitter about this that you can find here. I’ve always felt a certain discomfort at how Eren was treated by Isayama, but I could never put it into words, so all the credits go out to her.

Iirc, Isayama even asked the anime staff to make Eren more pathetic in the anime, and I don’t understand why.

He called Eren self-focused/selfish, which I strongly disagree with (though it’s not unusual for me to disagree with Isayama’s personal interpretations of his own story and I think it’s fine, because authorial intention not always gets conveyed correctly in a story and it doesn’t - and shouldn’t - have full control over how people interpret the story itself).

He always used Eren as a tool that the story constantly beat on, hard, no matter what he did. He was a slave to the story, in Isayama’s words, and it was a negative thing because it seemed like Eren didn’t have agency in spite of all of his struggles and, for this reason, Isayama couldn’t even understand his character, for YEARS.

Now Eren’s not a slave anymore, but this is portrayed as something negative, again, as every character in the story calls Eren out for behaviors he acquired thanks to the story and their badgering, when said story and said characters criticized his previous mindset. He can never win.

He will probably die, hated, after having done stuff that he is very obviously hating doing. He doesn’t deserve this.
