Chapter 3
Silence filled the space as the two of you walked through the bamboo forest. You didn't know where Mizu was going, but you didn't mind much. All that could be heard were the soft sounds of the snow being crushed beneath your feet. The sun shone down, seeping through the few leaves. Occasionally, you would hold out your hand to catch the many patterns of the small snowflakes that fell from the sky to distract yourself from all the walking.
The silence that once filled the air was broken by the same humming from before. Mizu, who was the first to notice, turned around, causing you to follow. Before Ringo could come any closer, Mizu drew her blade just a couple of inches away from his face.
"I found you guys!" he exclaimed as he started rambling about how he had a shortcut, causing you to zone out until he finished.
"Go home," Mizu said, putting down her blade and continuing walking. You quickly turned around to follow her as Ringo caught up with the two of you.
He explained how he now knew what he wanted to do, and that was to become a samurai like Mizu.
"Please let me be your apprentice. Uh, I'll do anything." You watched from the side as Mizu began, "A breeze can throw a crane off-course. You... are a typhoon." You raised your eyebrow, trying to make sense of what she said, but dismissed it as she began walking again.
He somehow caught up quite quickly and slid in front of the two of you.
"Please! I'm strong. I can carry your things, and you can have the best soba in the world every day!" he tried reasoning with Mizu.
The only part that stuck out to you was that he could cook well. You subtly nudged Mizu at that part and rubbed your stomach to see if she would consider letting him tag along. She looked at you with no emotion before looking back at him as Ringo called him his master.
You thought about it; having Ringo make you the best soba every single day would have been nice. But it seemed Mizu didn't take that into account because the two of you left him tied up to a tree. You didn't notice as Mizu began to walk ahead, and you kept behind as Ringo called out to you.
"Miss! Please tell me what did you say to become the apprentice," Ringo asked, looking at you with pleading eyes.
You didn't know what to say as you saw Mizu, who was ahead of you, look back with an impatient face. You took out your small notebook and ripped out a page as you tried to give it to him. Somehow you managed to get the paper to stay on the rope that kept him tied before running up to catch up with Mizu.
The two continued on their journey. But you stayed behind as Mizu went to a shrine for a quick moment before returning back. Curiosity struck you as you wanted to know what she had done there but decided to keep the curiosity to yourself.
You felt a rush of relief enter your body once you saw the gates of Kyoto and began walking at a slightly faster pace. Once the two of you were in line, you heard the small commotion of a mother not being able to enter without a male companion. You felt pity since you would've been in that same situation if it weren't for Mizu. You looked at Mizu and tried getting her attention by tapping her arm. She noticed what was happening but stayed silent. You decided not to argue back since Mizu was the only one able to help you get into the villages. You walked by the mother and child as the two of you got accepted and kept your gaze on them until you walked far enough.
"I have important business to attend to. You can stay here until I return," Mizu said, breaking the silence as you walked into the more crowded part.
You nodded before waving goodbye as she left and you parted ways. You began to walk around and stop at every vendor who was selling something to check out what they had. Taking in the beauty of this place, you wanted to stop at every place there was. As you went on, you saw Mizu at one of the brothels; this really piqued your curiosity but soon shook off the thought since it would be awkward if she saw you spying on her.
Time must have slipped by since the sun was already beginning to set. You entered a small shop and began to look around; to your luck, it was a supply shop. You opened the sliding doors and the wooden shelves were filled with all kinds of handmade tools and supplies, all which of what you needed. You stocked up on notebooks; however, you struck gold when you found flashcards that had simple phrases on them. They ranged from 'no thank you' to 'I'm hungry' and even a few sentences. You immediately grabbed them all and went to pay for it all.
Once you left the shop, you were hit with the cold wind of the night; snow began to fall again as you walked in the direction the snow was falling, making your cheeks and ears feel twice as cold as before. The street lamps were lit by now, creating small pockets of light as you walked down the snow-covered path. Stopping at an inn, you reserved a single room for two days since you didn't know when Mizu would come back.
A whole day has passed by now; you would spend most of your time exploring or taking a nap. There wasn't anything that would be too exciting since you already went to every shop there was. But once the second day ended and you left the inn, you found Ringo walking out of the brothel Mizu last stopped at. Quickly you caught up to Ringo since you didn't want to spend another day by yourself aimlessly exploring the city. He seemed to still remember you as Mizu's apprentice and took notice of you quickly.
"Miss, it's you again! Has master left?" he asked, looking around you to see if Mizu was with you.
You took out a flashcard you had 'no,' you showed him as you shook your head and flipped to another 'I'm Y/N, and you?'
"Ringo! Nice to meet you, Y/N," he said, smiling while holding out his arm for you to shake.
"It's good that I bumped into you since I was going out to look for the master," he began to talk on and on about the stories he had from the brothel that he just came out of.
You listened in as he went from story to story; you didn't mind since it was a change to hear someone talk.
"Why do you use those cards, Y/N?" he asked, pointing to the cards that were stored on the side of your pack.
'I don't speak.' You pulled out the card and showed him.
"Well, the idea of the cards is smart, Y/N. I have to say that," he smiled as he changed the topic to how he met someone who was also mute and how they lived with them for a week while stuck in a forest. You didn't know how, but the two of you managed to stray away far from civilization and more towards a forest. From afar, you could hear the sound of running water not too far from where you guys were.
'I'm getting hungry’' You showed Ringo the card as he happily obliged and set down for a small break. As he cooked up some food, he still went on about how he was now going to become a samurai like Mizu and compared how you all had "deformities" or such. You listened in and happily ate the food he served. As he cleaned the space, you began to draw in the snow, reaching for a small twig that laid out on the ground, you began to draw small patterns all over the place, each stroke causing the small twig to break. Hoping this would take your mind off all the walking you had to endure yet again. As he finished packing, the two of you set off again.
"You're a really good listener, Y/N. Usually, people tell me to shut my trap by now," he started as you took out a paper.
'I don't really have a choice, but I don't mind.' You handed him the paper and smiled.
"You're right; it's not even like you have a choice to stop me from talking. Well, you do, you could always throw something at me or push me, but you wouldn't do that, right, Y/N?" he raised an eyebrow.
'Nope.' You shook your head as he began listing off ways people have shut him up before. You listened in for the sound of what you thought was a small stream again to find a place to stop and get some water. You tapped Ringo on the shoulder and motioned him to follow you.
The sound only got louder from what seemed to be water. He began to hum again as the two of you walked closer to the water. But just as you two got out of the bushes, you were both met with the tip of Mizu's sword.
"Peaches."

Chapter 2
When you returned, it was already dusk. You carried the heavy bags you headed up the small steps and into the rented rooms. To your surprise, she was still lying in bed. You sighed, dropping the heavy bags onto the ground. You stumbled into the shared room and plopped yourself a fair enough distance from them and dozed off for a short power nap.
You awoke to the smell of food coming from the kitchen. Still having the waking-up-from-a-nap feeling, you slowly made your way over to the kitchen to see her holding herself up while cooking. Quickly, you rushed over but only to be stopped. Without even having to look back, she stopped you from coming any closer to the counter. You let out a small sigh as you took it as a sign and went to sit down.
It was quick before she had a plate done already and served it to you as she got hers. The two sat in silence as they both ate their meals. You finished and got up to put away your plate. You remembered that you had a small notebook in your travel bag. It was supposed to be for emergencies when you couldn't communicate with others, but you wanted to break the ice with this woman. You grabbed it and sat back down before flipping to the first page and began writing.
'What is your name?' you wrote as you handed her the paper and a yatate. She placed down her plate and wiped her mouth before taking it.
"Mizu," she paused, "and you?" she asked, handing you back the paper.
You wrote down 'Y/n, nice to meet you' handing back the paper.
"Y/n huh," Mizu's blue eyes met yours, "thank you for helping me," she said, breaking eye contact.
You flashed her a smile before writing down something else. 'I'm guessing you're a samurai, right?' You moved the paper while pointing to her sword, which was attached to her hip again.
She paused for a moment. "I'm seeking out my revenge; I have no interest in becoming a samurai."
You mouthed 'oh' before asking many more questions.
As night came, the two of you were still sitting down and asking the many questions you had.
"Do you not speak?" Mizu asked draping her arm over her leg as she kept her gaze fixed on you
silence filled the room, you paused for a moment before you scribbled something down and slid her the paper 'I can, it's just that I don't seek any pleasure in doing so’'
"Hm," she locked her eyes back on yours again, "I guess that's better than having someone who speaks their head off."
You let out a small chuckle before nodding in agreement. A yawn escaped your mouth, 'I'll be heading to bed,' you showed her the paper before closing your notebook and waited as she helped herself up.
The two of you stood in the room looking to find a solution to the bedding problem. You scratched the back of your head as you placed a small barrier in the middle of the bed. You gave her a look, which she took as 'will this work?' She nodded before watching you slip into bed. You felt as if she also got right in after you did.
Mizu was the first to wake in the morning. She quietly got out of bed before she went to fix up breakfast for the two of you. She had plans to leave right once she was better, which seemed to be any day, possibly today. She had no plans to stay any longer than she needed to. But it was a lie for her to say she didn't enjoy your company.
You soon woke up and went to make breakfast but found her already cooking. You grabbed your paper and began to write again. 'You're still injured; let me cook.' You slid the paper to her, which she only glanced at.
"I'm not injured anymore, Y/n," Mizu said, sliding back the paper which you took. You sat down and waited for the food.
Once the two of you finished eating, Mizu left to go get her things from the room. You took notice. 'Are you leaving already?' You handed her the paper as she put on her glasses.
"I seek my revenge, and I have no plans on stopping, but I appreciate your hospitality, Y/n," she said, handing you the paper with a faint smile.
You looked at her before returning a smile as she left. You followed her to the door before waving goodbye as she soon disappeared into the crowd. You sighed before closing the door and returned back to the bed. You began to collect all your stuff and pack it all up. You disposed of all the blood-stained gauze and wraps.
You set out again without any plans; the weather seemed to calm down since there wasn't any snow coming down anymore. The sun was just rising over the trees, which caused the rays of sunlight to shine through onto the ground. You soon left the village and began walking to the next village, hoping that you could find a safe enough place to start more of your studies in medicine.
As you reached the entrance to yet another village, approaching the line, you grabbed your travel pass and went right behind a woman. You fidgeted with the pass as the line moved inch by inch. The closer you got, you began to realize you didn't have a male chaperone to get you into the village. You began to panic a little as you had no other way of getting into the place. You stepped out of line and went to the back and kept your eye on the guards to make sure none of them spotted you. Without looking, you managed to bump into someone, causing you to stumble. They caught hold of you before you could fall back onto the floor.
"Y/n?" Mizu said as she let go of your arm once you regained your balance.
You quickly looked up to see Mizu standing there. You flashed her a smile before nodding.
"I didn't expect to see you here," she said looking at you. The line began to move again, and you decided to take the chance to ask Mizu for help. Without your paper, you tried to use your hands to try and inform Mizu. You tried pointing to your travel pass and back at the line and then to a man. She raised her eyebrow as she tried to follow what you were trying to say.
"You know the rules; women can't travel without a chaperone," the guard's voice boomed from a couple of people in front of you.
You pointed at the guard then back at Mizu.
"Do you want me to be your chaperone?" she asked as you nodded eagerly and began to motion her to follow you back into the line.
Once you two got into the village, you decided to stick around with Mizu, hoping she wouldn't mind. She looked at you from the side of her eye as you stuck close by her. The village was bigger than the last one and had more people out by the streets. There were a lot of vendors at the sides selling all kinds of stuff, many of which caught your attention. As the two of you walked on the cold snow, you felt your stomach grumble. Mizu stopped walking, which caused you to stop also, and followed as she walked into a soba tavern.
Your eyes widened once you entered and sat down with her at a table and waited to be served. You took the time to reach into your bag and get out your paper and yatate. 'I'm glad I ran into you, or else I wouldn't have been able to be here.' You slid her the paper as she took it.
"It was nice to run into you, Y/n," she said, handing you back the paper. Soon, a man came up and began talking.
"Welcome; I'll bring you some tea. It's not good tea, but it's hot, and you guys look frozen, and I'll bring you guys rags because when I'm frozen, my snot drips." You snorted at his remarks as he continued on, "then a nice big soba. We make the best soba. Honest. Bad tea, great soba okay?" He waited for a response, which you only responded with a nod and a smile as Mizu slightly nodded. He left humming a tune as he took the tray.
He came back shortly and served the two of you. Quickly, you slurped down the noodles and sighed in relief as Mizu also quickly ate the noodles. "It's good, right?" the man asked as you gave him a thumbs up, handing him your empty bowl. He left again and went to the next table before you heard a loud commotion coming from there. You glanced up to see a man have the soba all over his clothing followed by him slapping the poor man.
"What are you? A dog?" the man said before pointing at who you presumed to be the owner. "You let a dog serve food!"
The owner laughed nervously as he bowed. "Forgive my son. Can't go a day without breaking dishes," he said looking right at him, "ringo clean him!" Ringo began apologizing but somehow slipped on the noodles on the ground causing even more soba to go flying on the man.
You watched as the man grabbed a gun out from his chest. You inhaled sharply before feeling Mizu's hand lightly grab your shoulder as she whispered in your ear, "Go outside and don't come back in." You looked at her before going out of the tavern rather quickly.
Outside, you walked a couple of feet away from the soba tavern and crouched down on the floor and began drawing in the thin layer of snow on the ground. You don't know what happened in there, but the sounds of the man screaming broke your train of thought as Mizu walked back out. She looked around until she found you getting up from the floor and lightly jogging back to her.
"Let's go," she said as she began walking.
'Does this mean I can tag along with you?' you handed her the paper as you caught up to her side.
"If you promise not to get in the way of my revenge, then I suppose so."

Chapter 1
The soft white snow created a blanket on the cold, hard ground beneath you. The sun was barely shining, the leaves, now covered in a thick layer of snow, were blocking most of the sunlight, which caused small ray beams to shine down. Your feet–which were now dragging on the floor– as it became harder for you to walk in the snow covered path. The once firm grip you had on your bag was now weakening as the cold began to hit your unprotected fingers, causing you to have a weaker grip than before. Everything was going numb in your body.
What seemed like hours had gone by. You had progressed deeper into the forest, it became clear that you were now lost. Knowing you had a bad sense of direction, there was a low chance of you getting out. Slowly, you began to slow down the pace as the snow piled up. This was the end for you. That was until the smell of smoke filled the air.
Just a couple of feet ahead of you lay a small fire, barely holding up with the falling snow. Slowly, you crept up to the fire. Looking around to find no one, you placed your hands in front of the fire, taking in the heat as your hands began to gain more strength. You dropped the bag and crouched down closer, rubbing your hands back and forth to create more heat. Letting out a small sigh of relief as more of your body begins to heat up gradually.
Being so caught up with the fire, you didn't hear the sound of snow crushing under someone's foot. A ‘shing’ noise came from behind you. Quickly, your eyes darted to the side only to be met face to face with the tip of a blade.
"Don't move," a rough voice sounded in your ears.
You were unable to move, but carefully, you put up your hand in the air hoping whoever it was, would let you free, or have some kind of small remorse. A sharp exhale left your lips as the sharp edge of the blade pressed against your neck. You swallowed hard, shutting your eyes, not wanting to see what they were going to do with you. At this point your whole body was now shaking from both the cold and fear.
"I'm not going to kill you” they moved the blade off from your neck, “Just get away from here,"
You let out a sigh of relief as you regained your breath. Reaching for your bag you got up, trying not to make contact with whoever it was. However, to your dismay you were met with the strange person face to face.
The man stood no taller than you, just a small bit taller than you if you counted the height from where he was standing. He wore a large hat which was covering his face and a pair of orange tinted glasses. He was quite attractive in your eyes but before you could take a longer look at him, you remembered they had just tried to kill you. Quickly you took off not wanting to stay there a moment longer.
The time went by slowly, the sun, barely shining through the dark clouds, had begun to set on the horizon. As you continued walking, it seemed as if you had made a wrong turn in your path—not that it would have mattered, as you were already lost. Having the smart idea to retrace your steps, you found your way back to the same place. The exact same fire from before, it was now burned out as the snow put it out. A part of you wanted to go back but you were too scared of having to bump into that man from before.
You stood there for a while, looking to both sides of the forest, you had a choice to go back and start the fire up, or head deeper into the woods.
‘Hopefully that man won't mind me coming by--’ Your thought was cut short, a figure had just walked right by the fire and before anything could even process into your mind, they were suddenly on the floor.
You quickly rushed over and found the man lying face flat on the ground, his blade was still held loosely in his hand. You grunted, pushing him to lie on his back, checking for a pulse. His face was full of blood and there were some tears in his clothes. You took your bag and searched for something to help him. Most of the blood was coming from his chest, quickly you lifted up his top piece to try and get a better look at the wound. A pool of blood was all over his chest, you first took notice of how his chest was already wrapped up.
But the blood was seeping through the wrappings, so you had no other choice but to take off the wrapping. Hopefully he wouldn't mind.
You froze, you expected to see something else under the wraps. Hopefully she wouldn't mind you finding out her secret. This was the least of your worries; taking care of her was at the top of your priority at the moment.
You took out a needle and string to patch her up. Taking a piece of cloth and snow you used it to wipe away the blood on her body. Carefully you stitched her up and did your best to also stitch up her teared clothing.
Knowing that she needed better treatment you had to think of a way to drag her to near civilization. That was if you could even find a way out from the forest. She was buoyant (1), her wounds had all healed by the time you made it out of the forest. Seeing as there was no need to find a medic anymore, you searched for the nearest inn.
[1 Buoyant – capable of quick recovery; having positive indications]
The small lit lanterns paved a way for you to drag her body to the inn, catching the weird starts from others. You decided to place her down by the nearest bush while you rent out a room.
Inside it was much warmer than the cold, the palace was dimly lit and small chatter could be heard from around the corner. A strong smell of sake lingered in the air, seeming as if many drunks stayed here.
A heavy sigh left your mouth as you set her on the bed. You set to work making a hot meal for if she ever wakes up. You began to chop various vegetables and went out to get some water to boil. You continued cooking when you heard a sudden loud thump. You wiped your hands on a cloth before heading to the room to see the strange woman trying to get herself up from the ground.
You rushed over to go help her, but she swatted away your hand. You held your hand as you rubbed the red spot that was forming. "Where am I" Her voice came out raspy and dry
She tried to stand up but the lack of use from her legs caused her to quickly fall back onto the mattress. She lifted her head to stare you in the eyes; that is when you took notice of her blue eyes. You lost your train of thought as all you could do was stare. She must have caught onto this, she quickly reached over to grab her glasses.
You were at a loss for words–not that you could even say anything—
For a second you hesitated not knowing what to do, all you could do was motion to her wounds. It was difficult since it's been a while since you've last tried to communicate with someone for this long.
Her eyebrows knitted together as she looked at you. All that she saw was you pointing at your chest then back at hers. It was hard not being able to speak; it was instances like these that made you wan;t to just speak up since you couldn't get people to understand you.
Again, you tried explaining by pointing to her chest and then to yours to try and show her that you helped her open wounds. But finally, she took notice as she reached for her chest only to feel a new wrapping. Her eyes widened as she shot you a glare.
"If you tell anyone, I'll kill you," she said.
You put up your hands in the air and showed her that you wouldn't tell anyone by zipping your lips and smiled. She rested her face.
"Fine, since you don't talk, I'll take your word for it," she huffed, pulling herself up from the floor.
You watched as she limped over to get out of the room but had to reach for the wall as she began to lose her balance. You quickly came from behind and carefully grabbed her and led her back to the bed.
"I don't need you to coddle (2) me," she removed your grip as she sat down on the edge. "I can do this myself."
‘My god she’s irascible (3)’ You thought as you let out a sigh, helplessly watching her get up
[2 Coddle treated with extreme care; pampered] [3 Irascible marked by hot tempered and easily provoked anger]
You frowned slightly before leaving the room and back to the kitchen as you prepared her hot meal. You watched through the open window as the snow still fell onto the ground. A few kids were out playing and throwing snowballs at each other. Once you finished cooking, you brought her a plate of the food, entering the room you handed her the bowl which she took.
She hesitated for a moment but replied with a soft 'thank you' before eating it right away. You smiled as you left her to eat and grabbed yourself a portion of the food. You returned back to her room to get the plate to wash it. You found her sleeping again under the sheets, quietly you sneaked past to grab the plate and quickly left the room silently shutting the door.
You decided to take advantage of this moment and set out to the village to find more supplies. You prepared yourself to set out in the cold weather, grabbing more layers and a couple coins.
Next part will be posted!
