Smallville, Kansas
Before he was Superman, Clark Kent was really just a kid growing up on a farm
G-rated, 4.1k, character study, farm!fic
Read on Ao3
“You were an angel sent down from heaven,” Ma tells him every night after he’s said his prayers. “We wished and wished for you and our blessings were answered.” She tucks the edges of his quilt around his shoulders. It’s old, worn, not so much fraying, the stitching is still strong, but the edges are going white from friction. Ma said once that it was her Ma who made it, out of the scraps of baby clothes from Ma’s younger brother, the one that was lost. Clark likes it because it’s warm, and it smells like Ma even when it’s fresh from the wash.
“We must say thank you to the stars who sent you.”
“I know, Ma,” Clark says every time and you would think after eight years it would be repetitive, but it’s not. He doesn’t mind. He says thank you, a for-real thank you, one he means, not like Ginny Smith at school does when she takes a ribbon out of another girl's hair. He says thank you, not just for that he was given to Ma and Pa, but that they were given to him.
And every night Ma kisses him on the forehead, makes sure his blankets are all straight and tightly tucked around him, and tells him she loves him. He says it in return.
