Writing, at its core, is about stepping into someone else’s shoes. It’s not just about creating characters who are like you, it’s about understanding characters who are nothing like you. Writing forces you to ask, “Why does this person act this way?” “What are they afraid of?” “What do they want?” You have to feel what your characters are feeling, even if you don’t agree with them. That’s how you create characters who are complex, layered, and real.

Now i need this on ao3 so bad 😭
JEGULUS/SPIDERMAN AU MINI FIC PT. 3
Rating: M
Content warning: spice level 2
Oh come on!” James yelled as Electro zapped them again. He felt sick.
“Spidey!” Reggie yelled, flinging a web ball over Electro’s face. “Come here!”
James caught the web that was being offered to him and began swinging through the air, shooting his legs out and kicking Electro as hard as he could while he was still struggling with Regulus’s webs.
He fell to the water below.
“Is he dead?” James asked.
“Not likely,” Reggie gasped, grabbing at his side. “But he’ll be immobilized for a time. C’mon let’s get his hostages to safety.”
“That looks bad.” James reached for Reggie’s side.
The boy hissed and batted his hand away. “It’s fine. Our priority is the hostages.”
They climbed the tower into the metal nest Electro had created, his electricity no longer surrounding it. The two Spiders climbed in and began carting the hostages he’d taken back out and to the hospital below them.
“Electro used to be a brilliant professor, but he went a little crazy.” Reggie explained. “He was trying to use electro-shock therapy to cure his tremors, but his experiments were a bit rough and something went wrong.”
They flew through the sky, landing on the highest point of the tower they’d met at two days earlier.
“It’s really beautiful.” James remarked, watching the sun glitter the ocean as if set.
“Yeah,” Regulus breathed. “Come with me. I want to show you something.”
They made their way out of the city, to an airstrip that was almost entirely under water.
“I come here to think sometimes, or when my brother is driving me crazy. Or when Venom is rampaging.” Regulus tugged his mask off and flopped down into the water. “Lay here.”
James pulled his own mask off and laid down next to the boy, his eyes never leaving Regulus’s perfect skin.
“Stop.” Reggie shoved his head towards the sky. “Look at the sky of you’ll miss it.”
“Miss what?”
“My favorite moment of the day. Just before the sun disappears the stars come out.”
James watched Regulus’s eyes blink hazily into the evening sky. The stars grew brighter as the sun dimmed.
“Right here.” Regulus whispered.
James looked into the sky, it was nearly black save for the bright orange in the west. The stars were the most beautiful then, illuminated by the suns light.
Neither boy spoke for a long time. James’s chest ached inside of him.
“Alright I’ll bite. How did your Reggie die?” Regulus turned to James.
James watched the boy in front of him before finally taking a breath. “It was my fault. He shouldn’t have even been up there. I was fighting with Doc Ock. Do you have him on your earth?”
“We have a Doctor Octavius. He’s not a villain.”
“Well watch out for him. He may become one.” James smiled at Reggie’s sharp laughter.
“He’s sort of a villain for hire. And your parents on that earth hired him to try and kill me.” James winced, the ache returning to his chest.
Regulus slid their fingers together, grounding him just a bit.
“Reggie came up to warn me I think. I told him to stay away, I didn’t want him a part of my life as Spider-Man. Anyways, Doc Ock got to him while we were fighting and threw him off the building. I tried to save him, but I wasn’t fast enough.”
“I’m sorry you lost him.” Regulus said from beside him.
“So am I.” James whispered through gritted teeth.
“I’m not him,” Reggie began.
“I know that!” James snapped. “Sorry,” he winced. “Sorry I just wish you’d stop saying it.”
“I mean that I’m not going to die, James. I’m not fragile.” Regulus said.
James turned to face Regulus. He was different than his Regulus in ways. His eyes were sharper and hardened when they stared into James’s eyes.
“What happened to you?” James whispered.
“What do you mean?” Regulus asked.
“I gave you my trauma. It’s your turn.” James offered.
Regulus shrugged. “Life is just shit sometimes, Jamie.”
“Jamie?” James smiled.
Regulus sighed and met his eyes again.
“Fine. But I’m sure it similar to your Reggie’s trauma. My parents were awful and thought being rich was all their kids would need. Sirius is gay, which they hated, no heir and all that. Is your Reggie like me?”
“Yes.” James said.
Reggie sighed next to James. “It’s nice to know that we’re the same in every universe.”
“Why are you here and I’m not?” James asked.
Regulus shrugged. “Maybe you’re already dead in this universe.”
“Maybe.” James closed his eyes.
“James.” Regulus said.
“Yeah?”
James looked up to see Regulus leaned over him. He could feel his cheeks get hot as he was watched by the other boy.
“I’m not him.” Regulus said, his hand now pressed against James’s sternum.
“I know.” James whispered.
He wrapped his hand around the wrist that was now next to his head.
“Don’t pretend I’m him.” Regulus’s voice was hard as he pressed his lips against James’s.
“Okay.” James rasped, tugging the boy closer to him as Regulus slid on top of him with ease groaning as he deepened their kiss.
Something vibrated inside Regulus’s suit. He swore and tugged the phone out from his chest.
“What?!” He snapped, still on top of James.
“He’s doing what? Well can’t you control him?”
Regulus rolled his eyes. “Fine. We’re on our way.” He slammed the phone shut. “Sirius needs us. Venom is rampaging. It happens sometimes.”
“Is Remus okay?” James asked, being pulled up by the other boy.
“He’ll be fine probably. We just need to deal with them before he tries to eat anyone. It really fucks Remus up when Venom eats people.”
“But I thought he hated Spider-Man?” James yelled as they soared through the sky.
“Has a villain hating you ever stopped you before?” Regulus returned.
James chuckled and followed Reggie back towards his home.
“Venom!” Reggie yelled breaking through the roof. “Give us back Moony!”
“Spider-Man!” The creature yelled, climbing up to meet Reggie.
It was terrifying, the most terrifying monster James had ever seen. It was huge and coming for him.
Regulus was swinging, wrapping him in a web that was tearing through him only momentarily before he healed himself.
“I bet you taste delectable.” Venom was trying to engulf James.
“Venom!” Regulus yelled from down below. “Give him back or I’ll slice his throat.” He had Sirius, his hands holding a blade that was already cutting at Sirius’s skin.
Venom raced over, hurling himself towards the brothers.
“Don’t you dare!” He screamed. The noise was maddening, it made James’s skin crawl.
“Then give us back Remus!” Regulus shoved the knife deeper, Sirius hissing at the blood no trickling down.
“You won’t kill him.” Venom was shrinking. “You wouldn’t kill your own brother.”
Regulus cackled. “Have you not met us? I’d kill him for stealing my favorite sweater.”
James hit that switch!” Regulus demand, kicking his head towards a switch on the back wall.
“No!” Venom raced towards it as James flew through the air, hitting it at the last moment. The entire room filled with the most deafening sound James ever heard. He covered his ears, looking through watery eyes to see that Sirius and Regulus were doing the same as Venom convulsed in front of them.
He separated with Remus Lupin only long enough for James to flip the switch again before sliding back into his host body.
Remus was shaking and whimpering as Sirius shoved out of Reggie’s hold and caught his boyfriend in his arms.
“He took me.” Remus sobbed.
“You’re okay love.” Sirius soothed. “Nothing happened.”
“I’m sorry.” Remus sobbed. “I’m so sorry that you’re stuck with me.”
“Shh…” Sirius and Regulus helped the even frailer looking man up. “Come on, baby. Let’s get you to bed.”
“Tell James I’m sorry.” Remus whimpered.
James stood dumbstruck in the wake of the ruined laboratory. It had been completely torn to shreds, every scrap of information the boy had collected was gone.
Eventually Regulus returned, worn down. His eye bruising.
“He got you?” James asked.
Reggie shook his head. “Remus did. For hurting Sirius. It’s our deal. One of them gets to punch me if I hurt Sirius.”
“He’s terrifying.” James breathed. “How does the rampage happen?”
“Venom gets fired up and Remus gets worn down is our best guess. They don’t happen all that often. Remus lets him out every day for a bit so that he doesn’t wreak as much havoc, but sometimes he can’t reel him back in.”
“And that thing just lives inside of Remus?” James shook his head. “Can’t you get it out of him?”
“We’ve tried.” Regulus shrugged. “It’s tricky. They’re sort of dependent on one another now. Remus would pretty much drop dead without Venom keeping him alive. I want you.”
James gaped. “What?”
“Does it need spelled out for you? I want you inside me.” Reggie said, his head cocked to one side. “Do you want that?”
“Yes.” James said quickly as Regulus tugged him down into a heady kiss.
I won’t lie, I wasn’t sure that this little fic would get spicy, but here we are I guess.

what they don't tell you is that a well-written fic can get you to ship anything, and i mean ANYTHING. notp? not anymore. you will stay up late thinking about and crying over them for the rest of your life. characters you don't even know from a piece of media you've never engaged with? fuck it, they belong to you now. problematic ship that you loved to hate and now just love to love, that you must never tell your friends about? don't worry, ao3 knows how to keep a secret. like. a well-written fic will have you acting UP and that's a fact baby !!
