"hey."

the clock hand was getting dangerously close to midnight when sirius finally came back from god-knew-where. remus looked up to him, a faint smile painted on his face.

"hi, pads. aren't you cold ?"

black agitated his arm in disinterest as he sat in front of his best friend. he seemed agitated. as remus closed his book, he smelled a very familiar scent.

"dude. you smell like cigs and wet dog. i've made concessions. but this one i just can't. ick."

remus laughed at his own joke, but sirius seemed impatient. he drew a forced smile and took a breath, as if to start explaining himself. lupin, who didn't want his friend to be offended, took over:

"oh, i mean, it's okay. you know. i've gotten used to it. not that-- well, not that it's unbearable, i mean. it's not ! i just don't mind. who am i to talk anyways ? ha."

at this point, the sigh of the werewolf cheeks getting pinker by the second just made sirius laugh.

remus had been absolutely swamped under homework and though he was tired, he was propably unable to find sleep. or at least, that was the tip of the iceberg. that was what he told people to cover for the real reason he'd been so distant lately— his feelings for sirius were getting stronger everyday and had reached the point to which he made a fool of himself everytime his friend was around. just like he was doing at that moment. get your shit together, he thought. he just laughed along.

"moons, it's okay. i think needed some fresh air. i needed to empty my head and reflect on what really matters." sirius paused, composing himself for what he was about to say.

"you are so lucky you can do that. i am so tired. i'm sorry about earlier. i was only joking.—

remus was so focused on making excuses for his exhaustion that he didn't even notice sirius' impatience expanding to the point he started boucing his left leg off of the floor and hiding a discreet sigh under his hands.

—you know, with the exams coming, i don't know the day or time anymore. so think about my social aptitudes. let me tell you, my friend, i have become ANTI.."

"..remus ! can you catch a break ? please ?"

silence filled the room, lupin gazed at his sirius in incomprehension. black sighed and looked away.

"sorry. i didn't mean to. it's just that i have been trying to tell you something and you're just.. talking.— which is great ! i love when you tell me all the little things that bother you or make you happy. but right now i need you to listen to me so just.. promise not to interrupt me."

remus felt paralyzed. while a spark of hope was growing inside him, he tried not to let it get too big. it was more likely sirius would tell him something that was completely unrelated.

"okay. i promise."

sirius smiled at him, and cupped remus' scarred hand between both of his.

"so. what i was saying before you told me about how lucky i was to be able to go outside, is that the reason why i did so is because i've been hiding a huge secret from you and the other marauders. nothing that's worth panicking... i guess."

Remus smiled and indicated him to go on with a head move.

"so. umh. here goes. i.. think i like you. a lot. but also, you are the best friend someone could ever ask for and i would hate to loose you. i would. so, i have been hiding it. because we just can't."

remus tried to interrupt, but sirius rose a finger up, eyes wide.

"i mean! i just can't, because i don't know how you feel. probably not the same. and i would hate to loose what the four of us have just because i have chosen to be selfish. but, also, i would hate it even more to see your hand around someone else's, to see you laugh at some other guy's joke, to see you kiss someone else..."

sirius tried to let go of remus' hand but lupin held on. he tried to be reassuring. sirius gazed at their hands in silence, his eyes seemed to be looking for an answer in remus' knuckles. remus' hold tightened and he took a deep breath. this brought sirius back to earth. he didn't let remus start his sentence.

"i want to be the one who puts a smile on your face. I want to make you happy, as much as you make me. because you deserve it. and i like you. i... i like you an anwful lot. i adore you. and if you let me, i will do everything i can to keep you safe and happy. i am aware that i'm asking for a lot, but if you need to think about it or whatever. i'm just.. i'd agree with anything."

remus stood up, walked around the table to sit beside sirius and there it was: the moment both had longued for. as the clock rang the midnight bells, the two men shared their first kiss in the intimacy of the fireplace.
