Skywave Linux v5 is Now on Debian Sid!
Enjoy shortwave radio and overseas broadcasts, no matter where you are. Skywave Linux brings the signals to you. Broadcasting, amateur radio, maritime, and military signals are available at your fingertips.
Skywave Linux is a free and live computing environment you boot from a flash drive on your PC. Start it up, pick a radio server somewhere in the world, and tune in some stations.
Skywave Linux brings you the signals, whether or not you have a big outdoor antenna or can afford an expensive communications receiver. Hundreds and hundreds of volunteer operated radio servers are on the internet, which let you tune the airwaves and pick up broadcasts in excellent locations and on high performance equipment.
If you are into FT-8, PSK-31, JT-65, or other digimodes, you can decode the signals in Skywave Linux. It also has tools for decoding weather satellites, ACARS, and ADS-B signals.
Not only is Skywave Linux a prime system for software defined radio, but also for programming and coding. It has the Neovim editor and support for several programming languages: Python, Lua, Go, and Javascript. It is a great system for Web developers.
Debian Sid is now the base operating system which Skywave Linux builds upon. It is debloated, tuned, and tweaked for speed, so that you get the best possible computing performance. It works nicely on old laptops; it is super fast on a multi core, high spec PC.
For shortwave listening, weather satellite decoding, or airband monitoring, Skywave Linux is the system you want!

Jammers started on 7200 and then moved down to 3860 kHz. Time & freq sync is almost perfect, with a nice stereo effect from the combination of receiver sites. I recorded in IQ mode from pairs of KiwiSDRs, then synced the data during post production.
Unajammer and his buddies seem to be coordinating a bit less right now on their activities, unlike their winter jamming on the 75 meter ham band. But they were certainly up for hitting the fasheys on two different bands Wednesday night (early 2023/05/11 UTC time).

Enjoy KiwiSDR shortwave radios independent of your web browser. SuperSDR is a full featured KiwiSDR client which runs on your PC and is included in Skywave Linux.
Skywave Linux is a live boot drive image you use to stream internet radio and also tune live signals. You don't need an expensive radio or big antenna. All you need is a PC and internet access to enjoy top notch performance and access signals from around the world.
Is your local media crappy, censored, and filled with disinformation and propaganda? Break free with the global connectivity you get with Skywave Linux. Enjoy loud, clear, and BS-free broadcasts from far away places. Censors don't matter: this Linux has VPNs and Tor to get you around any of your internet content restrictions.

Shortwave radio - real signals - on your PC. Download Skywave Linux, make a boot drive, and tune in broadcasts from around the world.
You don't need an expensive radio on your table, nor do you need a big antenna outside. Apartment or condo dweller? Get Skywave Linux and tune in the world. From anywhere to anywhere.
Does AM radio offer noisy, crappy, propaganda-filled programming where you live or work? Use Skywave Linux and find some clear and BS-free programming instead!

Skywave Linux 4.4 is releases and on the wires, friends. Yeah, maybe I'm biased because I develop it, but dayum I sure enjoy using SuperSDR. And DirectKiwi. Snd the SDR Map utility. They make it so easy to tune around the bands and find great broadcasts.
You don't need an expensive radio on your desktop, nor do you need a big antenna set up outside your residence. You just need some internet...
Give Skywave Linux a try - you don't even have to modify your PC. It is a boot drive image you can write to a USB stick or boot in a virtual machine. Start it up and find some signals!

Tired of having to find CBC stream urls? Use a KiwiSDR to access your stations on a real radio, software defined. I listen to the CBC's great programming, along with a number of local and indie stations in Canada. Streaming from these radios is almost as good as being there.
HOW TO USE: Visit the link above and go to your city or region of interest. Click on a station. The page reloads with you station's frequency and some other parameters. Click on one of the KiwSDRs to bring up a new tab which will stream the station you want.

WebSDR Reviews 2022
Tumblr media
WebSDRs are getting better, thanks to better radios, new interfaces, DSP functions and driver software written by people who use or operate WebSDRs. I visit some receivers and discuss how things are going as we near the end of 2022.
It was so much fun, I opened up their code in my browser and played about with the frequency display and button fonts.

Skywave Linux 4.4 (GNOME + i3)
Skywave Linux 4.4 is in the works. Currently I am working on the keybinds, as the keys in i3 don't quite match the GNOME defaults - and many conflict with the hotkeys for SDR and radio streamer apps in Skywave Linux.
When the iso is released, you can just replace your old iso with the new one. You'll be able to switch easily between i3 and GNOME, and the keys will (mostly) work the same way in either session.

Capture Aero Data via RTL-SDR
Tumblr media
A British Airways 747 goes by - not too fast, partial flaps extended. You can intercept its voice and data radio signals with a properly set up RTL-SDR! Voice on the VHF-Airband is an easy catch. So is ACARS data, whether in the old signal format or the new VDL Mode 2. Know what is going on. See the book "Airband Radio on the RTL-SDR" for tips, tricks, do's and dont's for using software defined radio to harvest aero signals en masse.

It sure is a pretty scene! To be a Skywave Linux desktop, though, there needs to be some kind of antenna or antenna array under a big sky. <grin> This scene is nearly all sky... but the antenna?
