So I don’t know if squad promos are the done thing in this neck of the woods, but given the recent burst of negativity towards our favourite dungeon bat so close to his birthday, I thought it might be a good way for those of us who write him to hang together and support each other because apparently we’re bad people for writing who and what we want. Misc. Headcanons

These are too small to get posts of their own, but still relevant on some level.

Severus is surprisingly good with animals. He actually loves them. You’ll never catch him at it, but as a teacher he does tend to stop and pet the cat familiars of various students when they wander the grounds.

You bet your ass he accidentally mistook Minerva for a regular cat. I can never figure out whether she never let him live it down or just hasn’t told him.

He also spent a lot of his time over the summer(when Lily wasn’t around) attempting to help animals in the neighbourhood. He became a vital resource to the few remaining neighbours that had pets when they couldn’t afford to take their fur babies to the vet.

There is always going to be a slight flinch whenever someone touches Severus. He isn’t used to close physical contact, and he’s rarely received it in any positive sense, so he’s hyper alert when anyone touches him, and his body automatically assumes it means pain. If one is patient, careful, and gentle enough they can get him to relax, at which point he’ll unwittingly lean into their touch. This process is to be repeated every time contact is initiated until he grows to expect it.

 Severus has been able to see the Thestrals since his mother died the summer before his fourth year.

Headcanon

Severus has so many small scars he couldn't possibly remember where they all came from. If asked under theffects of Veritaserum about most, his answer would be 'My father, probably', or, when he's older, 'the war, probably', because at this point he does not keep track. He hasn't since he was nine or so. In reality, by the time he is an adult, Severus bears scars from his father, the Marauders, the Dark Lord and his followers, and several duels. Many of them, particularly those from childhood, he could get rid of using dittany, however he doesn’t see the point- figuring he is repulsive anyway, so why bother trying to clean up? Who is he aiming to impress?

There are two scars that are most noticeable, though only because they are clearly from trauma, rather than a regular injury.

The first is more a smattering of scars on his left shoulder blade, and it looks almost like he's had shrapnel lodged in his skin. This is from an incident during which Tobias threw a bottle that Severus couldn't dodge, and the bottle shattered against his back. Eileen managed to pull herself together long enough to pick the shards out of Severus's skin and bathe the area in antiseptic, and place a bandage over it. In reality, Severus is incredibly lucky his magic had manifested by this point, because it managed to burn away the infection that continued to try and creep in, as he couldn't care for it properly on his own. He was nine when the injury happened, and had turned ten by the time it was fully healed.

The second is a long, jagged line from his hip to his ribs on the right side of his stomach, that appears to have been stitched together by someone with little sewing experience at all- of skin or otherwise. When Severus was thirteen, he made the mistake of being in the room when his father decided that the dishes had not been cleaned properly. Tobias waved a knife around in the air, and unintentionally slashed Severus. The man spooked, thinking he'd killed his son(as Severus fell to the floor whimpering in pain and did not move) and bolted to the bar to drink away his fear. Severus managed to haul himself to the living room, where he found the sewing kit that had been a gift to his mother on her wedding day, and used it to crudely sew his injuries back up. Severus barely survived this injury, and it later served as the inspiration for Sectumsempra when he fell into a much darker state of mind.

He’d hardly expected it- had hardly expected Petunia to grab him by the collar and kiss him like this- nothing like the few chaste pecks they’d exchanged so far.

He’d been talking about something- a new potion that had been developed, perhaps, but now his mind had whited out, lost in the sensation of his wife’s lips on his in a hungry, demanding way he’d never felt before.

“W-what was that all about?��� he asked breathlessly once she’d pulled away.

Once upon the time the answer would immediately have been ‘Lily’- and he’d have immediately blushed and tried to take it back, because admitting that his best friend was the closest thing to home he’d ever felt would be admitting too much.

Now the answer is nowhere. Spinner’s End, at best.’Home’ is a place for the heart and for feelings- two things which Severus strives to bury.

Anyway.

“It just isn’t worth the trip, really.”

“That law has always sounded ridiculous. I mean yeah, avoid it while other muggles are watching, but if it’s your family…”He paused, frowning. He knew what it was like, angering your father without doing much other than just be you. Magic was their nature, as was Sirius’ personality, it was impossible to restrain it much. 

Sirius stopped for a moment after his bark of laughter, observing Snape, really looking at him, for the first time in a while. “Why don’t you?” Sirius had rows with both his parents often for voicing his views, arguing and not keeping his head down more than anyone would be able to know. The Blacks kept a rather tight seal on it all, except on days like today. 

“That’s the plan… it’s been the plan, though it wasn’t, originally.” He sighed, and for just a ��moment, let his disappointment and sentiment show through before he covered it with a smirk. “Dad thought I’d get better. ‘It’s just a phase, Walburga.’ Hah.”

Why don’t you? It was a good question. Why hadn’t he just given up on appeasing his father?

Probably because he had nowhere to go, no friends to turn to- unlike Black.

“Oh I’m going to. I’ve just got to wait until I’ve got enough saved up that doing it won’t put me on the street.” Considering if and when he stood up to Tobias it would almost certainly end in being kicked out permanently at best- and death at worst. “Considering the moment I stop playing along with him is the moment I no longer have a home to go back to.” He shrugged, acting like it was no big deal. 

“Why don’t you just leave? I’m sure Potter or Pettigrew would take you in without a second thought.”
