A rough, choking sound escapes her, sorrow furrowing her brows. "But you were not. You almost died, Jace." A bout of sniffles accompany her next string of cracked, woe-laced words, "you... You almost a- abandoned me."

It is harrowing to see the strongest person he knows crumble before his very eyes for his sake. Jace feels a terrible guilt-born monster feasting on his insides. He disentangles his hand from Baela's and moves it to her cheek, stroking lightly at the soft, tear-streaked skin. Baela leans into his touch, and he wishes his body was not just an amassed lump of pain and wounds so he could lift himself and wrap his whole body around hers. His mind yearning for the need to comfort her, coveting the consoling closeness, but his body utterly useless when she needs him most. 

He wipes away a salty drop that had slithered down her cheek, his own voice scratchy and heavy with the gravity of the situation, "I would never."

There is a split moment when he thinks Baela will smile at him, maybe small and battered, but hopeful. Yet the moment is soon gone when a burning blaze engulfs her eyes and vexation contorts her beautiful features. Baela scoffs and rather unceremoniously swats his hand away. Jace is perplexed when she begins pacing his rooms, her shoulders tense and hands raking through her messy curls in a frazzled state. 

She eventually turns to him, all angry hand gestures and pained fury replacing the previously wrecked imitation of the lady he is so well-acquainted with. 

This is the spitfire he knows.
