the thought of a character who was so excited to celebrate their birthday with their friends/partner, but wakes up with a cold and fever is driving me insane right now. like they’re so sad, wallowing in bed, trying to hold back tears so they don’t make their congestion worse. this is the worst birthday ever! until their friend/partner knocks on their bedroom door and brings them ice cream and a present and sits with the sickie until they get them to smile, even just a little bit. while they’re watching a comfort show, the sickie drifts off to sleep on their caretaker’s shoulder, thinking maybe it wasn’t such a bad birthday after all.

An extremely congested, cold-ridden person with glasses on pushing them up to the bridge of their nose when they notice them slipping down, the slightest touch of them setting of a fit of itchy sneezes

having thoughts of a couple in bed sharing an absolutely miserable head cold. They’re both propped up with pillows to watch movies or try to read, even though their heads are stuffed full of aching congestion. There’s a full box of tissues between them and steaming mugs of tea on their respective bedside tables. It’s day 3 of this cold, their symptoms are the worst they’ve been since both of them came home from work with scratchy throats two days before. They can’t even snuggle up to each other, as they’re both too warm from their fevers.
I’m thinking of them lying together in silence, only it’s not silence, because there is no respite from their cacophony of symptoms. When one sneezes, the other’s coughing. When one blows their nose, the other launches into a fit of hitching and sneezing. There’s a constant sound of one or both of them sniffling. On more than one occasion, they let out a snotty sneeze at the same time, and can’t help but think that this misery of cold symptoms will never end.

an archaeologist with a cold whose already sensitive nose is irritated by the dust and dirt they have to brush off the artifacts they find. normally, they wouldn’t want to work like this, but they’re so close to finding artifacts from the ancient city they’ve been studying their whole life. they wrinkle their nose in attempt to clear some dust, but that only tickles their nose more. they turn their head away from the others at the dig and let out an earth-shattering sneeze.
and it wouldn’t really matter to the rest of the dig team, but the archaeologist next to them happens to be their romantic partner. they watch as the sickie continues working, clearing their throat and sneezing. their partner wants to tell them to go back to their tent and rest, but they know how much this means to their career and their personal studies, so they let them go.
but then the thunder claps above them and the rain starts to pour. they both rush back to their lodgings and spend the night cuddling together for warmth.
in the morning, they’re much worse, but the sickie dresses themselves for work alongside their partner.
“Sweetheart,” their partner warns. “I don’t think you should go into the field today with that cold. It’s supposed to rain again all day today.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“But you can barely speak!”
“Well, good thing I don’t need to speak to the dead.”

I have a bad cold and I’m playing D&D via zoom and my friends made it canon that my character has a cold for this session and I’m screaming internally because they don’t know that a) I have the fetish and b) I’ve written sickfic about my campaign and this is my dream scenario

real life sickfic moment I had yesterday: i went to the pharmacy to buy tissues and cough drops for my cold (spoke too soon in my last post), and when i went to open the back door that i usually enter/exit through, it was locked. So i had to walk from the front of the store to the back where my car was in the POURING rain. Like they literally closed schools in my area because the rain was so bad. Everything was soaked by the time I got to my car: the tissue box, the packet of cough drops, and (most annoyingly) my hair. I wasn’t wearing a jacket either because I’d just come from a hiring talk at school where we had to dress up and the rain wasn’t so bad when i left. As i was walking briskly around the building, i was thinking “i bet this’ll make my cold worse” and i honestly think it might’ve because I’ve been more congested ever since

a meet cute where two people bump into each other (literally) in the cold medicine aisle in the pharmacy. They stare at each other’s red-rimmed nostrils and less-than-presentable attire and kind of shrug in acknowledgment. One of them asks “you, too?” in a hoarse voice and the other nods. It’s the beginning of a beautiful partnership.

Love when a character is struck down at the very end of finals week with a horrible cold because their body is just so stressed from rushing to finish assignments by the deadline.
Bonus points if they come down with this cold after pulling that last all-nighter and their partner finds them asleep at their home office desk, snoring stuffily in their sleep.
Bonus bonus points if their partner carries them into to bed. The sickie wakes up for just long enough to expel a super congested “H’KCHK!” right into their partner’s chest before they drift off to some much needed sleep.

on my mind today:
A person coming home from work, flopping down on the couch next to their partner, sneezing stuffily, and grumbling the phrase:
“I think I caught your cold.”

when a character’s home with a bad cold and their partner makes sure to stop at the sickie’s favorite restaurant and a pharmacy on their way home from work, so when they get home to find their partner sulking on the couch, buried under a mess of blankets, tissue pressed to their red nose, they get to be the one to put a smile on the sickie’s face.
“Here, sweetheart, I got you your favorite.”

A caretaker that’s extra worried about a sickie who’s not quite better yet. The sickie’s fever’s gone, and they’re not as congested as they were at the height of the illness, but they’re still lightly sniffly and sneezing every so often. The sickie insists they’re ready to venture back out into the world, but the caretaker notices on their trip to get coffee that their shivering sickie is moving sluggishly alongside them. They can hear them breathing extra heavily when they sit down in the car to drive home. It’s not congested breathing so much as it’s weak from days of inactivity. And when they finally get back home, the caretaker watches the sickie like a hawk as they try to do some light catch-up work that they missed over the course of the week. For the rest of the morning, the caretaker is always one step behind the sickie doing housework, playing with the pets, and just enjoying not being so bunged up and miserable anymore, ready for when the sickie eventually crashes.
It isn’t until the sickie lies down on the couch and falls asleep at lunchtime that the caretaker wraps their arms around them and pulls them close to their chest. The sniffly sickie wakes up at their touch and sighs:
“I think I needed another day of rest.”
Cue the caretaker and sickie spending the rest of the day on the couch cuddling under a thick blanket and watching comfort movies. Yes, tomorrow they’d have to go back to work, but today they can just relax.

Itchy colds are something else. The itchy feeling in your throat that you can’t quite shake when you swallow or speak, producing a dry itchy cough. The itchy sneezes that make your eyes water and constantly tease and tickle your sinuses. Constant false starts. One heavily clogged nostril and one mostly clear. The ever-constant itch in your ears that makes you a little dizzy. Drinking mug after mug of tea that irritates the itch in your throat even further. You can’t sleep because you’re just so uncomfortable. In fact, it’s uncomfortable to do much of anything— even just lie there—without itching and itching and itching.

love love LOVE when a person is trying to hide a cold from their partner over the phone, but the partner can already tell because of the heavier, slightly congested breathing they hear on the other end of the line.
And when their partner eventually asks: How’s the cold?
Their eyes widen. They’ve been busted.

Just read this scene in a book where a character is injured and her LI is a footballer and he goes to check on her and she’s asleep while wearing his kit.
SO I GIVE YOU…
A is a professional athlete (whatever sport/televised event floats your boat) and is on the road for a game. Their partner, B, is home watching the game on tv. They were going to be there in person to support their love, but the day before the game they’d come down with a horrible cold and decided they weren’t up for traveling.
The game starts and A is sequestered on the couch under layers of blankets, clutching a box of tissues for dear life. They can’t even hear the commentators over their constant sneezing, coughing, and blowing. Their head throbs, but they manage to stay awake for the entire game, just as they promised B they would be. Maybe B even scores and blows a kiss to the cameras, knowing A is at home watching.
After the game, B, instead of opting to celebrate with the team, decides to head home early to see A. After all, taking care of their poor sick baby is way more important than a win.
Eventually, B opens the door of their home to find a museum exhibit of A’s last few hours: there are crumpled tissues all over the couch, there’s a mug forming a wet ring abandoned on the coffee table. Medicine bottles are scattered around the den. B shakes their head. Poor A.
When they reach the bedroom, they discover a snoring A starfished on the bed, who is rubbing their red-rimmed nose in their sleep. B creeps into bed next to A, pulling them into their chest. With a congested breath, A awakes and looks up at B.
“B?” A mumbles. “I thought you were’t cobing hobe udtil toborrow.”
B stroke’s A’s hair. “I wanted to get home and take care of you. I missed you so much.”
“Snrf- I bissed you, too.” A nuzzles further into B’s chest. Perfect. “I saw you score.”
B kisses A’s sweaty forehead, feeling heat radiate from it. A’s definitely running a fever. B decides to take A to the doctor tomorrow, but for now, they need rest.
“Oh yeah? I thought you’d be asleep.”
A shakes their head. “Do. I- heh- I steh- heh- Hisheew- stayed awake for the whole gabe, just like I probised you.”
B doesn’t even mind that A sneezed right into their shirt, they’re just so happy to be home. They let out a small chuckle. “Bless you. I’m proud of you, sweetheart.”
And as A drifts off to sleep, snoring again from the congestion, B looks down and realizes A’s wearing their jersey.
