alfaba worldbuilding post 1: The Land Of The Humans
note: many details may be subject to change as i develop my world. i’ve been working on it since about january 2021 and shit loads has changed about both my characters and the universe they inhabit. what follows is information i’m constantly editing.
currently unnamed human realm
1.) geography and climate
this planet is relatively similar to ours, except days are 22 hours long with a 365 day long revolution around the sun. it has two small moons - also currently unnamed - which create pretty unique tidal patterns. it’s split into four continents, all of which recognize themselves as individual countries (sorta like australia in our world. except there’s tons of political issues surrounding this which i won’t get into here. tldr border and land disputes and also nationalism). the continents are: frejasland, padamuna, mediterra, and niflenheid (also known as the democratic republic of niflenheid). there are also a few small island states but they’re vastly uninhabited and/or colonized by mediterra.
i’ll insert an image of the world map, but the people of this world use the east/west/south/north vocabulary just like we do. however, the “world centre” in this case is a very small and incredibly mysterious landmass known as [insert name here when i choose lol]. nobody has ever set foot on the island itself, though those who dare do so come back... slightly off. many will either deny that they ventured near, or deny all requests to describe it. many theorize it’s either a portal or a land of gods. some believe it’s a land of evil. in fact there’s various cults formed around worshipping it. heading toward the island instantly fills sailors with an unnatural chill not usually expected at the equator and they will often turn away at that point.
2.) frejasland
named after the nature god frej (or frey), frejasland is a mostly warm, flat, and relatively dry climate, but with an unprecidented biodiversity unseen on other continents. this means it has naturally fertile soil and is said to be blessed by the god himself. it’s not quite rich and tropical, but it’s definitely not desert. much of its flora is very similar to that of south african fynbos: succulent and hardy plants, incredibly grassy. it’s situated south of the equator.
the people of frejasland are known as frejasmens. they are not particularly concentrated in one area or another. in fact, though it hosts a massive and diverse population, it’s parliamentary capital city (kenjan) is the smallest of any capital. most live in rural areas as subsistence farmers, or on collectively owned tribal land. some farmers are pretty wealthy though, as their main export is agricultural produce and they have a trade deal with niflenheid (well, the DRN).
though the frejasland government really doesn’t hold significant power, they do have a council. new members are democratically elected every 11 years. kenjan is obviously their place of operation and different mayors are also elected to control different major towns across the continent. this is partly due to the fact that most frejasmens live pretty far away from one another. it’s not complete anarchy, but the police force (what little there is) mostly operate in big towns. generally, the rest of frejasland is just left to their own governance.
there are many different ethnic groups in frejasland. the folk are almost as diverse as their plants and animals. however, they all share one thing: an intense connection to the god frej. they are a pretty religious country and relatively united in their worship of nature. it’s very much a developing nation though.
alongside agriculture, frejasmens also pride themselves on their medical and herbal knowledge. with so many medicinal herbs available at their disposal, minor injuries and illness is almost never a problem. wild mage magic is also welcome in the country and many amateur magic wielders will travel all over the world just to apprentice under frejas masters.
water is a pretty big issue, though. especially in the eastern parts of frejasland which are pretty much ubiquitously semi-desert or desert. dams and resovoirs are the first thing you see before entering any major town, though smaller communities rely on underground springs.
helewik (the second largest town) is a culturally a lot different to the rest of the country. though they follow the same religion, speak the same language, it was founded on land rich with gold and other minerals. it’s the only “mining town” in the country. it’s also slap-bang in the middle of the desert, so buildings are made of stone and concrete (which many frejasmen never see in their lifetimes). a significant portion of the town is also inspired by mediterra architecture as most of the town’s population hail from poor refugees during the mediterra civil war. so it’s very blocky shapes, bright white paint reflecting the harsh desert sunlight, and long roofed corridors all help to provide insulation and protect the generally pail helewik frejamens from sunburn. (this is very inspired by the architecture of tunis, tunisia, as well as greek building style)
some socio-economic issues include: lack of education, lack of career opportunities, lack of housing (srsly the urban ppl need an architect so bad kenjan has some of the prettiest yet most unsafe buildings in the world. please get some engineers), lack of infrastructure (there’s no roads. not even brick. not even in kenjan.), technologically ill-adapted, CRIME especially in cities
2.) padamuna
this is the smallest continent geographically yet one of the two global superpowers. lying just to the east of the “”“world centre”””, padamuna is incredibly humid and warm pretty much year round. it’s forests are so dense that if one flew over the rural land, you would think it was completely unpopulated. it’s got some incredibly poisonous and deadly nature too.
despite this, the padamunians are incredibly inventive, resourceful, and organized people with a massive military (see later). it’s capital, hirosungwa, stretches across a fifth of the land, even though you cannot see any of it from the naked eye.
