One of the best stories I ever read as a child was a fantasy novel by some local dude selling books out of a suitcase on the sidewalk downtown, and I don't remember what it was called or who the author was, and it's so obscure that no matter how many elements I remember, I've never been able to find it through web searches. I only vaguely remember the story - it was a love story, something about a tower on an island and two characters on a quest to discover their forgotten past. They fall in love and at the end the only way to stay together is to allow themselves to forget again, and you realize that they're right where they started, in the exact same tower, and they're doomed to go on this same quest over and over again, never completed, but that also means they'll fall in love over and over again forever. And I remember how that ending blew up my little child brain into a million pieces.

I don't know what happened to the book, and I'll probably never read it again, but if you're somewhere out there and you were once selling fantasy novels from a suitcase on the sidewalk in the suburbs of Chicago, and if you ever felt like your writing never meant anything or went anywhere except a hundred copies you had printed yourself and sold for almost nothing, please know that your story buried itself in my young brain and has probably shaped my worldview in ways even I don't understand.

I’ve been trying to phrase something I really want to say but can’t because I’m not a philosophical person nor can I write that good so I’m just gonna say it like I have it in mind.

If you’re unhappy with your art, the way it looks and such, and you keep comparing to other artists’ skills thinking “I’m never going to be good enough” “I wish I could draw like that”, remember that no artist was born with “talent” for as much as people may say that to us. We weren’t pushed out of the womb with a pencil in our hands, we actually had to practice and endure a lot of hard work and burnout and pressure to get to where we are; and yet we still can improve FURTHER because art has absolutely no limits. No you’re not stuck in bad lineart or bad anatomy “phase” because you can always give yourself that little push to finally start feeling proud of what you create.

It’s never late to start studying more, practicing more, and getting to know your style. If you so admire an artist, then reach them. Make art for yourself and make it look good to yourself, not for others nor anything else.

Routine reminder that no matter what, you are better than any ai will ever be and your art has value, simply by the thought and time it took to make it. If you're out there creating things for yourself that's wonderful and I'm proud of you and you should keep doing that forever. Keep drawing what you love, keep writing that fic, and take care. We'll get through this shitty era one day.
