Update #02 - March 23rd, 2016

Letter: To the artists, I want to share with you my idea on using reference for your art….it is essential.

You hear things like, “How do I draw something right from my imagination?” and you begin to believe you HAVE to ONLY create using your imagination…

AND THAT IS JUST BULLSHIT

Imagination is a fantasy, a nice place to visit in a daydream or a place to sort-out that concept for your new story…but your IMAGINATION is no place to look-to for consistent, material to capture in your art.

If you want to draw a new OC, grab a pose and use it as the foundation. Don’t burn-out trying to come-up with a pose, spend your creative energy on the details. Use that imagination on the costume, the facial details, the concept…a pose is just a pose.

If you use enough of these poses, there will come a time when youj won’t “depend” on them anymore…because you will have stored anough of them in your head to just grab one whenever you like…till then, you have my permission to use these poses to get a JUMP-START on your drawing.

Use them for concepts.

Use them for comics.

Use them for your own artbook of characters.

Use them for your commissions.

Do whatever it takes to make new art.

Drawing “from your imagination” is a great way to stop drawing. Disheartening. Stop falling for the lie. As an artist for hire, you are paid for your results, not your methods.

This is my 2-cents.

At LAAAAAAASSSTT I finished! Took longer than I thought but I hope the wait was worth it. This is  chemwolf34 's OC, a water nymph named River. Had a lot of fun shading and rendering, not to mention designing the dress. Oooohhh I love designing clothing so much! :3 Was a pleasure to work on and work with <3 Also debuting my Seal - the red Chinese stamp on the bottom is my family's name in a ying-yang motiff. I thought for all paid commissions I use this as my sig as well.

Work update! This is so sad but apparently I agonized over the face for more than 2 hours, according to my husband. That is the time I spent on the scarf and one kimono sleeve together... Wow I got issues

Anyone remember this wip?? I finally worked up the courage to talk to the commissioner who graciously opted for completion instead of taking my refund + interest% offer. I’ve been working on this little bit just about every time I work on other pieces. It will be some time before I can work back the trust of my Gaia and Deviantart fans and customers but I am working hard towards that goal. I felt instead of silently working, I should post more wips so people know what’s going on. Never thought anyone would actually care about me or what I’m working but if an insight to my dull life could help me regain trust, then I shall do so.

The flat colors are laid down with basic lighting concepts. Started shading actually but I shant post it until the body at least is mostly done :3

I’ll be honest, it kind of sucks being in the middle of the spectrum as an artist.  On the plus side, can draw better than stick figures.  On the down side, can’t draw realistically enough to wow people, and can’t draw crazily stylized enough to amaze them either.  Welcome to the world of acceptable yet unimpressive art where your work is filler to tide people over until the good artists swoop in and get in the spotlight.
