Vivian Maier: Street Photographer (eng/gr text) 

Vivian Dorothea Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an eccentric street photographer. Maier worked for about forty years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, pursuing photography during her spare time. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her career, primarily of the people and architecture of New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide.

During her lifetime, Maier's photographs were unknown and unpublished, and she never developed many of her negatives. A Chicago collector, John Maloof, acquired some of Maier's photos in 2007, while two other Chicago-based collectors, Ron Slattery and Randy Prow, also found some of Maier's prints and negatives in her boxes and suitcases around the same time. Maier's photographs were first published on the Internet in July 2008, by Slattery, but the work received little response. In October 2009, Maloof linked his blog to a selection of Maier's photographs on the image-sharing website Flickr, and the results went "viral", with thousands of people expressing interest. Critical acclaim and interest in Maier's work quickly followed, and since then, Maier's photographs have been exhibited in North America, Europe, and Asia, while her life and work have been the subject of books and documentary films.

 Quite simply, an utterly iconic image, with the Fab Four themselves at their coolest: John resplendent in a white suit, Paul barefoot. Perfectly in harmony, and utterly British. The crossing itself was given Grade II listed status in 2010 - there aren't many traffic artefacts that can boast that.

 The distinctive 'Alien Angel Foetus' design was created, remarkably, by Bernhöft using a Bic ballpoint pen but, using just this simple tool, he created the perfect visual representation of Sigur Rós' unique sound: otherworldly, eerily beautiful, and delicate.

 Το ξεχωριστό σχέδιο ενός εξωγήινου αγγέλου εμβρύου δημιουργήθηκε, εντυπωσιακά, από τον Bernhoft χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο ένα στυλό Bic. Με αυτό το απλό εργαλείο δημιούργησε την τέλεια οπτική αναπαράσταση του μοναδικού ήχου των Sigur Rós: απόκοσμο, παράξενα όμορφο και λεπτεπίλεπτο.

 All five of the covers for Johnny Cash's last era of recordings, the American series are fantastic, with the big, simple typeface utilising the strength of the legend's name. However, the coolest is for IV: The Man Comes Around, as it juxtaposes that strength with the visible weakness of the Man In Black himself: nearing death and reflecting on his life he looks downward and prepares to fade to black himself.

A simple outline of the band's iconic logo together with the title in plain typography, it perfectly complemented the music itself: simple, heavy, no-nonsense, and brutally effective.

A crazy, yet brilliant cover befitting a crazy, yet album, the cover's concept was devised by Jim Steinman, the genius songwriter behind Bat Out of Hell. Naturally, it had a motorcycle erupting out of a graveyard with a giant bat looming over the tombstones in the background. Subtlety never was Meat's thing.

Ένα τρελό, αλλά ιδιοφυές εξώφυλλο που αρμόζει σε ένα τρελό άλμπουμ. Το θέμα του εξωφύλλου επινοήθηκε από τον Jim Steinman, τον ιδιοφυή τραγουδοποιό  πίσω από Bat Out of Hell. McQueen ran with the theme of Björk as a 'warrior of love', creating this incredible image. The hair alone weighed 10 kilos - sometimes one has to literally suffer for their art

An iconic image of a true jazz great, the cover of Coltrane's Blue Train was supposedly inspired by Picasso's Blue Period. The photo, taken by Francis Wolff, certainly captures the sax legend in a pensive, thoughtful and, well, blue mood; basically looking like the super-cool legend he was.

Reed had no interest in putting the band on the cover of the Sex Pistols' only record - "They were ugly anyway'' - so he used what he termed "cheap hype", using ransom-note style lettering, brash colours and simplicity that anyone could recreate; the perfect representation of the DIY punk aesthetic. Utterly unforgettable and utterly cool.

"Brother" Jack McDuff (Sept 1926 – Jan 2001) was an American jazz organist and organ trio bandleader who was most prominent during the hard bop and soul jazz era of the 1960s, often performing with an organ trio. Born in Champaign, Illinois, McDuff began playing bass, appearing in Joe Farrell's group.Encouraged by Willis Jackson in whose band he also played bass in the late 50s, McDuff moved to the organ and began to attract the attention of Prestige Records while still with Jackson's group. McDuff soon became a bandleader, leading groups featuring a young George Benson, Red Holloway on saxophone and Joe Dukes on drums.McDuff recorded many classic albums on Prestige including his debut solo Brother Jack in 1960, The Honeydripper (1961), with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest and guitarist Grant Green, and Brother Jack Meets The Boss (1962), featuring Gene Ammons, and Screamin’ (1962).After his tenure at Prestige, McDuff joined the Atlantic Records label for a brief period and then in the 70s recorded for Blue Note.

Along time before Smart there was Peel P50. The Tiniest & Cutest CarEver Made (eng/greek text)

The Peel P50 is a three-wheeled microcar originally manufactured from 1962 to 1965 by the Peel Engineering Company on the Isle of Man. It was listed in the 2010 Guinness Book of Records, as the smallest production automobile. It has no reverse gear, but a handle at the rear allows the very lightweight car to be physically manoeuvred when required.

Designed as a city car, it was advertised as capable of seating "one adult and a shopping bag". The vehicle's only door was on its left side, and equipment included a single windscreen wiper and only one headlight. Standard colours were Daytona White, Dragon Red and Dark Blue. The 1963 model retailed for £199 when new (about £1,400 in 2010, or $2,200 USD). 50 of them were produced, and only 27 of them are known to be still in existence.[4]

In 2010, production of a replica version was started by a newly formed company, called Peel Engineering Ltd based in England (not to be confused with the original Peel Engineering Company from the Isle of Man). Externally this car was very similar to the original but with many major mechanical differences in the suspension, steering and drivetrain. Driven by an electric motor and with a top speed of 16 km/h (10 mph), this version was produced as a display vehicle and was not road legal. In 2011 production commenced on new road legal petrol & electric versions. Most colours from the original are used in the 2010 models with only Dark Blue being replaced by Capri Blue.

Production is located in Sutton-in-Ashfield, England.

In 1963, as a publicity stunt, a Peel P50 was taken to the top of Blackpool Tower in the lift and driven around the observation balcony.

 On 15 February 2013 at the Bruce Weiner RM Auction a genuine 1964 Peel P50 (Registration number ARX 37B) achieved in excess of $120,000.

High-Tech in the1950′s: HighWay Hi-Fi (eng/greek text)

  Before there was the in-car CD player, before there was the in-car tapeplayer, before there was the in-car 8-track player, even before there was thein-car 45 RPM record player, there was the Highway Hi-Fi. 

It was the brainchild of Dr. Peter Goldmark, the man who headed up CBS Labs and who had developed the LP for Columbia. He was actually inspired by his son asking for adventure stories that he could listen to in the car, instead of the boring stuff on the radio. Goldmark decided on an in-car record player. He did some calculations and figured out that, to get 45 minutes of sound on a side (since the thought of people zooming down the highway while changing records was probably pretty gruesome), he'd need to design a 7-inch record, playing at 16 2/3 RPM, with triple the number of grooves per inch that an LP had (there were 550 of them), and utilizing a 0.25 mil stylus. It only took Goldmark's team six months to develop the “ultramicrogroove” record and the player. 

He tried to pitch it to CBS management, but William Paley, the head of the company, somehow got the notion that if there were a record player in cars, people would listen to that instead of his radio stations. So Goldmark went off to Chrysler (since that was the kind of car he was driving at the time) to try and interest them in it. After seeing a demonstration that the device worked as well on Chrysler's "torture track" as it did on a highway, management was enthusiastic. 

Christened the "Highway Hi-Fi," it was first released in the Fall of 1955, under the dashboard of various 1956 models. Goldmark found out at the last minute that the suspensions of Plymouths and Dodges and DeSotos were nowhere near as solid as those of a Chrysler, and the unit had to be redesigned for the less expensive lines.

Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty (eng/greek)

Penn was born on June 16, 1917 in Plainfield, New Jersey, to Harry Penn and Sonia Greenberg. Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) from 1934 to 1938, where he studied drawing, painting, graphics, and industrial arts under Alexey Brodovitch. While still a student, Penn worked under Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar which published several of Penn's drawings. Penn worked for two years as a freelance designer and making his first amateur photographs before taking Brodovitch's position as the art director at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1940. Penn remained at Saks Fifth Avenue for a year before leaving to spend a year painting and taking photographs in Mexico and across the US. When Penn returned to New York, Alexander Liberman offered him a position as an associate in the Vogue magazine Art Department. Penn worked on layout for the magazine before Liberman asked him to try photography.  Penn's first photographic cover for Vogue magazine appeared in October 1943. Penn continued to work at the magazine throughout his career, photographing covers, portraits, still lifes, fashion, and photographic essays. In the 1950s, Penn founded his own studio in New York and began making advertising photographs. He was a master of both black-and-white and color photography. He published more than nine books of his photographs and two of his drawings during his lifetime. Penn was one of the first photographers to cross the chasm that separated magazine and art photography, narrowing the gap between art and fashion at the same time. His pictures reveal a taste for stark simplicity whether he was photographing celebrity portraits, fashion, still-lifes, or remote places of the world. Akiko Tsuruga is a jazz composer, Hammond B-3 organist and pianist from Osaka, Japan (this talented musician began playing the Organ at the age of three). She launched her career in jazz immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living in Osaka, she had opportunities to play with world-renowned jazz musicians from the United States. Grady Tate, in particular, had the strongest influence on her professional career and convinced her to move to the U. S, Dr. Lonnie Smith is one of Akiko’s greatest mentors, and she considers him as her biggest influence. Her talent also drew Lou Donaldson’s attention, and soon he chose her (2007) as his quartet’s organist.

The track “When a Man Loves a Woman” is included in her debut cd “Harlem Dreams” (2004). Starting with this release, Akiko had caused a stir that would make her an international star on the jazz scene.

“Young Man with a Horn” is a 10" LP album, released by Columbia Records as CL-6106 on March 13, 1950, featuring trumpeter Harry James and singer Doris Day.

The LP was enormously successful commercially, spending 11 weeks at the No. 1 spot on Billboard's album charts, albeit non-consecutively. Doris Day and James shared the 5% royalty for album sales.

Peter Lik has been shooting expansive scenes of Mother Nature his whole life. Born in Melbourne, Australia to hardworking Czech immigrants, he never took the gift of life's beauty for granted. Peter's catalogue of work can be traced back to the essential moment when, at 8 years of age, the gift of a Brownie Kodak camera from his parents set him on a course for destiny. Since his first, fateful snapshot of a spider web in the family garden, Peter has followed his calling to capture and share the most beautiful places on earth.

It was after a trip to the United States in 1984, that Peter discovered the panoramic camera format, a defining moment in his career. Challenged with the dare to "Go big or go home," Peter did both. For the next two decades, Peter would travel back and forth between the United States and his native Australia, honing his craft and establishing his prominent position in the world of fine art photography. In the late 90s, Peter took a giant leap forward, taking on a massive project now known as "Spirit of America." After fifty thousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film, Peter had revealed landscapes from all 50 United States, completing the "biggest challenge of my life." Bob deVos is an American jazz guitarist whose playing style is similar to that of Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery. He is most noted for his work with organist Richard Holmes

DeVos started in jazz as a student of Harry Leahy and Dennis Sandole. In 1970, when Sandole sent his leading students out to audition for the organist Trudy Pitts, deVos was chosen to step in for Pat Martino. 

Since 2005, Mr. DeVos has headed his own Bob DeVos Organ Trio (Dan Kostelnik on Hammond B3 organ and Steve Johns on drums). 

Mr. DeVos is currently on the music faculty at Lehigh University and teaches privately.

The track " You Don't Know What Love Is" is included in his first solo cd "Breaking the Ice", 1999 (highly recommended).

The organist Charles Earland,  the drummer Vincent Ector  and the conga man Master Henry Gibson contribute with their skills to the high quality of this album.

"You Don't Know What Love Is" a popular song of the Great American Songbook, written by Don Raye (lyrics) and Gene de Paul (music) for the Abbott and Costello picture Keep 'Em Flying (1941), in which it was sung by Carol Bruce.

"Here in My Heart" is a popular song, written by Pat Genaro, Lou Levinson, and Bill Borrelli and published in 1952.

A recording of the song by Al Martino made history as the first No1 on the UK Singles Chart, on 14 November 1952. "Here in My Heart" remained in the top position for 9 weeks in the UK, setting a record for the longest consecutive run at No1 (a record which, over 50 years on).

Other versions, recorded by Vic Damone, and Tony Bennett, were also recorded around the same time. A R&B version was also recorded that year, by Wini Brown and her Boy Friends. 

In 1961, Martino re-recorded the song, although it only reached No86 on the Billboard Top 100 chart. He had previously rerecorded the song in an unsuccessful rockaballad version for MGM's Cub label.

In 1963, Richard Harris performed this song in the film This Sporting Life, although he would not release his first album until four years later, with 1967's Camelot).

The independent UK drama movie was directed by Lindsay Anderson, with Richard Harris and Rachel Roberts.

Richard Harris was a genuine star of cinema on screen and a fiery hell raiser off screen, (born 1930 in Limerick, Ireland, to a farming family). He was was an excellent rugby player, with a strong passion for literature. Unfortunately, a bout of tuberculosis as a teenager ended his aspirations to a rugby career, but he became fascinated with the theater and skipped a local dance one night to attend a performance of "Henry IV". He was hooked and went on to learn his craft at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, then spent several years in stage productions.

He started playing at the age of 7. He began his professional career at the age of 19, touring with Buddy Rich.

Among his many credits, he is the only guitarist to have ever led Frank Sinatra's band. He played for many years in Los Angeles before returning to the Philadelphia area. He counts Johnny Smith, Hank Garland, Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, Howard Roberts, Jim Hall, and Pat Martino amongst his influences.

In March, 2011 Jimmy opened up Jimmy Bruno's Guitar Workshop, a website that allows students to learn directly from Jimmy through video lessons. 

The track “Groove Yard” is included in the cd " Live at Birdland", 1997. This excellent set from guitarist Jimmy Bruno can easily be divided into two. The first 4 tracks (which include "Move" and "Grooveyard") showcase Bruno in a trio with bassist Craig Thomas and drummer Vince Ector; the guitarist mostly swings quite hard. The other 6 tracks feature the great altoist Bobby Watson, who takes spirited solos on "Segment," "Au Privave," and "Anthropology," adding to the intensity and drive of this high-quality bop set.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz was born October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 1970 she took a job at Rolling Stone magazine. In 1983 she began working for the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair. During the late 1980s, Leibovitz started to work on a number of high-profile advertising campaigns. From the 1990s to the present, she has been publishing and exhibiting her work. Since 2007 Leibovitz, who is considered one of America's best portrait photographers, was approached by the Walt Disney Company with the idea of doing a series of celebrity portraits in Disney fairy tale scenes, to promote their “Year Of A Million Dreams” promotion. Although “Like That” was recorded in New York, many of the people involved with the project were Philadelphians. The pleasing hard bop date unites Jimmy Bruno's Philly-based trio of the 1990s (which includes bassist Craig Thomas and drummer Steve Holloway) with organist/trumpeter and Philly native Joey DeFrancesco, Although DeFrancesco plays organ on most of the 11 songs, he switches to the trumpet and favors a Miles Davis-influenced mute on relaxed versions of "There Is No Greater Love" and "Stars Fell on Alabama”.

Cécile McLorin Salvant (born 1989, in Miami, Florida) is a French-American jazz vocalist. She started classical piano studies at 5, and began singing in the Miami Choral Society at 8. Early on, she developed an interest in classical voice, began studying with private instructors, and later with Edward Walker, vocal teacher at the University of Miami.

Salvant was the winner of the first prize in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010.

After completing high school, Salvant moved to France (2007), where she studied classical voice and then began studying jazz with woodwind player Jean-François Bonnel (she recorded her first album "Cécile" in Paris, with Jean-François Bonnel's Paris Quintet.)

Salvant won four categories in the 2014 Down Beat Critics Poll: Jazz Album of the Year, Female Vocalist, Rising Star–Jazz Artist and Rising Star–Female Vocalist. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2014 for her album Womanchild.

The song “Prelude There's a Lull in My Life” is included in her cd “WomanChild”, 2013. Her reworking of "There's a Lull in My Life" evokes the sultry R&B influence of Sade.

Harry Revel composed “There's a Lull in My Life”  in 1937. It was played in April of the same year in the Hollywood musical "Wake up and die". The same year it also reached No2 of the charts with Teddy Wilson Orchestra w/ Helen Ward.

The “Grand Central” (2013) is a France/Austria drama/romance film (director: Rebecca Zlotowski with Léa Seydoux and Tahar Rahim).
