south was in the trailer and now i wanna return properly...

                                                                       “ Epsilon... ”

       It comes out as only a soft spoken murmur. That THING        was the defective AI that had RUINED Agent Washington;        The MEMORY FRAGMENT. From what she had heard        through rumours spread by other agents: it had shown Wash        memories that weren’t his, tried to TAKE ITS OWN LIFE        inside him. ——— Epsilon had taken Wash’s sanity, and now        it’s taking the REST of the project with it.

   “ Yeah, that’s what they called it. He was Wash’s AI, before...         ———— before shit happened. He... uh... messed him         up real bad, y’know. Would hardly consider him HUMAN. ”

          “  Uh, here, let me quote what you just said:                  ‘I BELIEVE TEX IS A TOOL’.  ”

He says it rather bluntly, shaking his head    with slight disappointment. Tex wasn’t    necessarily the best person (she certainly    wasn’t a thing) to be around, but he had so    much more faith in her than a lot of the soldiers   he had encountered throughout his career (minus   the Blood Gulch Crew, they had a knack for   winning). But more importantly, she never   seemed like a tool. She always seemed like   a woman of independence; one who knew   exactly what she wanted and never relied   on anyone else.

          “  Look- I know it’s a lot to take in, but it’s the                   truth. And I know another A.I.- well, an A.I.                   of an A.I., anyways. But he was just as                   human as his predecessor, and let me tell                   you, Church is one of the most passionate                   people I’ve known. The second one, anyways.               εpsilon, I think they called him?  ”

       “ Chill out. It’s a figure of speech! I’ve still got a long way             until I’m middle aged. YOU, on the other hand? You act as             if you hit retirement YEARS ago. —— How old are you, Sats? ”

“Honnouji Academy is the name of the high school that I founded, and Honnou Town the community of students and their families that surrounds it.” Satsuki didn’t believe that South was truly middle-aged for a second.

“Do you expect me to believe that?”

             She rolls her eyes, growing frustrated at him.           ( TYPICAL. It seems South and Delta can’t              be around each other for too long without               someone getting pissed off. )

          “ I KNOW. I passed basic science, y’know. ”

“While I am sure you may be using sarcasm, I shall explain in case you were serious. The human body has millions of chemicals that make it work and function. If any ff those get imbalanced, death would be almost instant.“ Was that a low key threat to South, or was he stressing how delicate the add ad was in case she ever got an A.I?

             “ Lady, all you’ve done is list names I’ve never                    fuckin’ heard of. ——— But I guess I’m not                    supposed to have, right? Middle aged old                    ladies like me aren’t supposed to care about                    school unless it’s for their kids. ”

                          South, you’re only in your twenties.

“You are correct.” And yet South gave Satsuki a nickname anyway. She would expect nothing else. 

Honnouji Academy was no great secret. “I am the Student Council President of Honnouji Academy, as well as overseeing the surrounding community known as Honnou Town. There the students live with their families when they are not training under me.” 

She wasn’t interested in whatever South had to say about herself, so she wouldn’t encourage her to tell about it. 

“Does that satisfy your curiosity?”

          “ You said it took TEXAS, as if she’s one of them;                  like she’s an AI. ——— Whi - which she’s not.                    I’d know if she was one of ‘em. ”

                She explains this with only a slight degree of                 uncertainty, as if she’s doubting herself. Agent                 Texas moved with a gracefulness no human                 could ever truly achieve, could predict even the                 most DIFFICULT of trajectories. That, and her                 seeming LACK of emotions, is enough to make                 one doubt her humanity.

           “ And my thoughts on AI in general? They’re...                they’re tools. Nothing more, nothing less. ”

Oooh man. There was a lot of things South                  still didn’t know- which made this a lot harder                  for Doc. There was no way this could’ve actually                  happened- it was like, one of those offshoot                  timelines (he can just hear Simmons murmuring                  something offhandedly in the background) where he                  comes back, and it’d still be the same- but                  South and the ol’ Freelancers here (if they knew)                  would develop into a different timeline.

                Still, he’s somewhat cautious, avoiding her questions.                 She doesn’t need to know anything too troubling-                 hopefully not yet.

                       “ Say- what are YOUR opinions on A.I.? What-                           what makes you think that the Meta had no                           reason to go after Tex? ”

        “ But.. while we’re HERE, it’s all that matters. The              Director barely lets us go on missions unless we’re              like, what? At the top five or so? Besides, there is              nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition.              That’s what Counselor Price called it, right? ”

             She’s unsure; doubting herself. ( Something which              is becoming a frequent occurrence since joining the              project. )

“I’m sure it’s been made clear by my lack of making it on there that it doesn’t exactly fuel my existence, South.”

Her opinion on the leaderboard wasn’t that much of a secret, considering the comments she made to the others occasionally. Sure, she trained by herself and had started to avoid training when she knew the others were likely to be around. That wasn’t driven by a desire to be the top of the leaderboard, though; it was driven by a desire to be able to fight back against the others if it came down to it.    (She hoped it didn’t– she wanted them to get out and be free from this awful shithole of a Project.)

“Try not to let it be always on your mind, South.             –As stupid as it sounds, there are more important things to worry about than your ranking.”

She crossed her arms, cocking her head to the side slightly. She sounded almost concerned (because she didn’t want this Project to tear apart her friends teammates), but she tried to play it off as a casual suggestion.

                       “ As if I’m supposed to care?                      Better that than fucking STARVING. ”

                        “Yes, but OVEREATING after an extended period of no food at all MAKES YOU SICK.”
