I love how queer Althea is and how queer her relationship with Brashen is.
For the sake of this analysis I'll refer to Althea as straight because it seems to be what she is in the books/canon, and also in my personal interpetation of her character, but as we all know there are many different ways to read and interprit a book.
So.
Through Liveships one of Althea's greatest fears seems to be being put into the role of a gender-conforming wife. She has also specifically expressed wanting to have the role of the husband/the masculine role in the relationship.
I was first uninterested and a bit frustrated in her relationship with Brashen since I've seen this EVERYWHERE.
In so many pieces of media you see the masculine woman who "doesnt need no men" get in a straight relationship with a man that brings out her feminine and soft side which is always so frustrating because it shoves a queer-coded and gender-non conforming character and puts her in an unbearbly heteronormative relationship and ruins her character by pushing her into the feminine role, which always feels very out of character.
(Either that or the relationship is treated as a joke - because whats funnier than a woman being more masculine than the man shes dating? Whats funnier than implying a man isn't masculine conpared to his girlfriend?)
Except that doesn't happen with Althea and Brashen. Despite "being" Brashen's wife she isnt suddenly in that feminine role.
We see this in the Rain Wild Chronicals, people who knew of Althea found it silly for her to be called "Brashen's wife".
We see this even more in Asssassin's Fate, where we get to see more of Althea and Brashen working on Paragon and co-captaining.
Althea didn't get the house-husband she wanted in Liveships, but she still didn't take on the "feminine" role in their relationship. There is no one in Althea and Brashen's relationship who is in the role of the wife, they both have the "role of the husband", the "masculine" role in their relationship.
Its not a masculine man and his weird slightly masc girlfriend, its two people who both have the masculine role in the relationship. It is so refreshing to me and very, very queer.

She sat down again and said, "Well. It's a strange pleasure to see the man who wears my ship's face—though doubtless you think of it the other way. Please, come to our table, and have a cup of coffee and tell me how it felt to see the figurehead Amber carved to match the man who held her heart."
The silence that follows a very awkward statement has a peculiar noise of its own. I swear that I could hear Lant holding his breath and literally feel the wide-eyed stares from Spark and Perseverance. I found a hasty lie. "Coffee would be welcome! It may be spring, but the wind off the river cuts right down to my bones."
She grinned. "You never knew she'd carved your face for the ship, did you?"
Was honesty becoming a dangerous habit? What would Chade have thought? I allowed myself an embarrassed laugh and conceded, "Until a very short time ago, I did not."
"Oh, sweet Sa," Althea muttered, and Brashen brayed out the suppressed laugh that he could hold back no longer. I heard a soft exclamation behind me and turned to find that Alise had joined us.
"Oh, the things our women do to us!" Brashen exclaimed and came to clap me on the shoulder.
▪︎
"I've put Prince FitzChivalry and "Lady" Amber in the same room she once shared with Jek and me. Lord Lant, Clef has offered to share his cabin with you. He's given you the bunk and we'll hang a hammock for him. Per we put belowdeck with the crew." She gave me an apologetic look. "For now, we put your serving girl in with you and Amber, but—"
"Actually I don't mind a hammock belowdecks alongside Perseverance. It's better than sleeping on an open deck."
"Oh, we can do better than that. No need to separate you from your lady." This from Brashen.

I'm more than halfway through the first liveship traders book. And so far I can say:
1. Paragon is absolutely amazing. Best ship ever, need more of him, please
2. I need more of lady Amber. Through spoilers I know exactly who she is and that's why I crave her presence. Give me more of lady Amber, gimme her lore, plEASE
3. Wintrow is a nice lad, but holy shit he is naïve. Precious boy, I really fear he might die
4. Kennit is absolutely amazing. I know he's gonna fall and it will hurt as a bitch, but for now he's at his highest
5. Brashen. Idk why but I love this idiot. He's dumb as fuck in some cases, but nonetheless he's an amazing sailor and a real gentleman (I'm also surprised, thought the sea live got it out of him, but no)
6. Althea. She's... It's gonna take some time. I don't dislike her, but I don't really like her either. But we're getting somewhere, at least she's less annoying
7. Fucking Kyle. And Malta. Both are disgusting, but Malta, as I feel, is about to enter into her redemption arc at least, this little fucker is about to get beaten by life and I approve of that. She needs some hard life lessons. Kyle however... I can't wait for this bastard to die. Fuck him. No redemption, idc what happens to him (only bad things I hope). Fuck Kyle. Even Regal wasn't as despicable as he is. Ew.

So Malta and Reyn named their son Ephron, after her grandfather. Which is great and all but that means that Althea and Brashens boy isn’t named after her beloved father/his mentor who gave him a second chance to reach his potential after he was disowned and that feels like a huge missed opportunity?

So i finished the liveship traders a few hours ago and i have Thoughts and Feelings.
-im so????? emotional?????? i feel wrung out. i was so invested in the lives of these characters and the speed with which i read the books combined with how emotionally weighty some of the content of the books has left me feeling so many emotions and i cant name half of them.
-i didnt expect to enjoy this series as much as i did. i practically flew through the last book (read it all in roughly 2 days) and i think thats the fastest ive ever read a book that length.
-Althea Vestrit my darling, my baby, my honeybunch, my sugarplum. How i adore you.
-She went through so much :( And despite it all she kept that daring spirit.
-actually i think all my favourite things about althea are the thing that keffria hates about her lmao
-kennit. fucking kennit. i was actually kind of attached to that bastard right up until you-know-what happened. yes i know he was manipulative but at that his motives were still kinda understandable and even forgivable given the trauma and whatnot. he was actually doing some good with destroying the slavers and freeing the tattooed (even though his real intentions were selfish). But what he did to althea was fucking disgusting and honestly i think he deserved a worse ending than the one he got.
-like seriously. you had a perfectly good sympathetic villian. whyd you have to go and make him irredeemable.
-wintrow and paragon not caring that kennit is a literal rapist is actually so realistic bc men fr be defending their rapist friends like that irl too.
-on the subject of villains, kyle haven got off too easy as well because this whole thing is his fault if you ask me. wintrow, althea, ronica, and keffria should have all gotten the chance to beat the shit out of him.
-at first i thought etta was wayyy too clingy and weird but she grew on me (thanks to her expanding her world past kennit's existence). i actually really hope to see her in the rest of the books, and i really wanna see how shes adapted to being queen.
-i love the vestrit women and how they were written. aside from my boundless love for althea, i have mad respect for ronica and i enjoyed seeing malta's character development. at first i thought keffria was too much of a prim and proper tradwife but when shit hit the fan and she had to stand up and be strong even she became tolerable.
- i went from wanting to throttle malta to her becoming my little princess. i just wish she didnt have to go through so much shit to become better :( she was too young to act the way she did before but she was also too young to go through the things she did when she got lost in the rain wilds
-malta should have gotten the opportunity to slap cosgo silly at least once
-im so conflicted by reyn and malta's relationship bc on one hand they are SO cute together but on the other hand im not really feeling that age gap :/ the story would have lost absolutely nothing by making reyn closer to her age.
-MISS AMBER❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
-i know who she really is and im just so interested to find out whats going on there cause why the masquerade??? theres a whole other layer added to it when i think about all the talk about the Fool's gender in the farseer trilogy
-amber is so different from the fool that it took me way longer than it should have to realize that they were the same person. At one point i suspected she was his sister LMAOOO. but sometimes she'd say something or do something and i couldnt help but feel so happy in my heart bc thats my fool!!!!! <3
-FITZ IS HER TRUE LOVE 😭😭😭😭 SCREAMING AND CRYING
-paragon asking her to give him a face she could love and she just. without hesitation. gives him fitz's. down to the damn earring. down to the broken freaking nose. help.
-i love her relationship with paragon 🥺
-grag>>>>>>>brashen. i liked brash as a character and id most definitely let him hit but theres something about tenira that just #DoesIt for me. hope althea's happy though
-i love this book series.
-even though i know that im likely to see many of these characters again in the later books i still miss them :(
-time to read tawny man!!!

"Trellvestrit!" someone shouted behind him, but Boy-O had already set down the lantern and scrambled up to Vivacia's bowsprit. He ran lightly along it and then without hesitation threw himself toward Paragon. Paragon released Vivacia immediately. He caught and lofted the young man as I had once lifted Dutiful's small sons; and, as I had then, feigned tossing him into the air before catching him securely once more. Agile as a tumbler, the man accepted this treatment and laughed aloud at being caught. Freeing himself of the ship's grip, he climbed onto Paragon's hands and then launched himself backwards, flipping in the air and landing again nimbly on the ship's outstretched hands. Plainly it was a game from his childhood, one they both recalled with pleasure. Seldom had I seen that level of trust between any two creatures. Paragon could have torn Boy-O in half with his big wooden hands, but instead he held him at arm's length and the two studied one another, the man grinning as he looked up at the ship's face.
Unnoticed by me and perhaps also by Paragon, lines had been thrown to men in small rowing boats, and they were hauling Paragon in one direction and Vivacia in the other, swinging both on their anchor chains as they separated the two ships to a safe distance. I wondered if Boy-O had been aware of the plan, and then I wondered if Paragon cared. He had made his plea to Vivacia and had half of what he had requested, and the look on Boy-O's face was one of fearless love for his ship. No wonder Paragon had missed him.
"Prince Fitz—"
"Hush," I bade Per. I was watching Althea and Brashen. Their conflict showed plainly on their faces. Love for their son, worry for him in the ship's hands, but also that fondness of watching the two together. Boy-O said something to Paragon as the ship caught him, and the figurehead threw back his head and roared with laughter. Looking at them, I could scarcely believe this was the same being that had been so supremely unconcerned for his crew's welfare. I half-expected Brashen or Althea to call to their son with a warning, but they were both silent and waiting. Confident in the young man or in their ship, I wondered.

Brashen scratched his chin and then smiled at Althea. ‘Changing history seems to run in your family. First Wintrow and Malta, now Selden.’ He took a sip of his tea.
Paragon spoke up, his voice wry. ‘So fortunate for you that you married the sane, responsible female in the family.’
Brashen choked. Althea slapped him on the back, perhaps a trifle harder than she needed to.

Wait. Is Althea and Brashens son actually named Boy-o? Or is that just a thing Paragon calls him because Paragon is weird and kind of erratic? I sincerely hope it’s the latter
