Can we talk about AOT's soundtrack ?

(Spoilers obviously) I just need to ramble on about this soundtrack. I'm not even talking about the opening and ending songs (Akuma No Ko my love) but about the actual instrumental OST.

It's so good. So good. I don't think I heard such theatralic soundtracks for an anime yet (yes Demon Slayer has nice pieces, Narutos are iconic, Jujutsu Kaisen has some nice ones, but still). It really enhances the scope and emotional weight of the story, which, if you watched AOT, is immense.

It's my favourite anime so maybe I'm biased, but everything in the score makes it fantastic. The choirs, the string instruments, the electric sounds, everything is titanic (pun intended, ok I'm out).

One of my favourite pieces gotta be XL-TT. Just the choir gives such goosebumps and the melody is absolutely iconic. I remember being frozen seeing the titans for the first time, with the score playing in the background like doomsday just arrived, bells somberly chiming over the sinister drums, everything just melting together in this dreadfull and terrifying apocalypse score.

ətˈæk 0N tάɪtn is also such an iconic piece. These weird electric sounds and the fast paced drums... and then just the iconic part at 2:20. Goosebumps everytime.

Don't get me started on APETITAN. Zeke's theme is so dreadful it encapsulates the terror of another one of these abnormal Titans for the people behind the walls. It's so weird and sounds almost alien. And the small intermissions where the choir takes over, an amazing melody of despair and stakes at play for the survey corpse. Its so good.

Wanna cry ? Just listen to Vogel im Käfig. A bird in a Cage, that's what Eren was. It's so heartfelt and gutwrenching. Plus, the iconic part at the end. This score manages to blend slivers of hope with complete resignation, frustration and the realization that the situation will never shift to your advantage ever.

Then there is Ashes on The Fire. Such a masterpiece. It sounds different, since it's used for Marley and the warriors, but oh God does it sound good. The drums, the calm interludes where only piano notes play, the hectic string passages and the build up to the choirs chanting this epic music... it's amazing. It's so good. SO fucking good.

STRAY KIDS - Loose my breath

Ok so I'm obviously skipping the controversy (see how I ignored the something something artist they collaborated with ? Huh ? Yeah, I clearly do not support whatever the fuck this dude supports, but that doesn't stop me from supporting Stray Kids and enjoying their songs. I think they're just here to make music and fuck that other dude. Because what's going on is inhumane. Also, listen to the Skz only version. Not the one with the dude.).

Anyways, with that out of the way, let's go.

I think this is one of my favourite releases of this year for now. Their vocals their visuals, the concept, the instrumental.... But lets try to be organized, shall we (it won't work) ?

The whole song feels like drowning in the depths of the ocean, choking on iridescent freshwater pearls and melting in a world of dark blue and salt. It's suffocating, but in a bittersweet way. Like the movement of tides, it has a certain flow to it, somehow calm and muffled but also hectic and strong, like waves crashing against cliffs. Their vocals are heavenly, whale chants in the depths of the sea. especially Seungmin and I.N, they were on something here. Changbin as well.

The whole water theme is translated so well in the instrumental. The guitar sounds as if the chords were wet, or as if you were under water and hearing the melody in the distance. The little muffled melody in the background sounds during the verses also seems like raindrops on the sea when you're beneath the surface. In general it feels like a place of peace and paradoxically yearning during a storm, just like beneath the surface of the agitated ocean during a tempest. Plus the bass and rythm are really tasty. The choreography slowing down during the first part of the chorus is an amazing choice, it feels like everything is in slow motion, like how your movements are hindered under water. I don't know why, because the song is rather fast paced, but everything around it just gives off the impression of drowning amongst a school of whales.

Lee Know biting the peach feels like tasting a forbidden fruit, maybe desiring some sort of prohibited love, pining in silent and suffering, wanting to muffle the voices in his head through putting his head under water. It's all iridiscence, water droplets and glass pearls, shells and dark abyss. Like getting lost, being overwhelmed by endless masses of water, just like being in love for the first time and pining in silence feels like, or being so overly stressed you just want to drown feels like. It's like a scream in the sea, but no one can hear you because the water doesn't let you utter anything but bubbles.

I really like this song. I also love listening to the instrumental, it's so relaxing and nice to listen to.

I'LL IT - SuperReal Me ⋆｡ﾟ☁︎｡⋆｡ ﾟ☾ ﾟ｡⋆

General Impressions

I was hyped as soon as I saw the concept. Animecore ? Magical Girls ? Retro video game vibes ? Sailor Moon aesthetic ? Count me in. This concept has so much nostalgic value, it is insane. It felt like a girls night in a pastel purple bedroom with those fluorescent moons and stars you could stick to the windows, mountains of pillows and plushies and hot cocoa. Like a stroll through the city at night, neon signs blinking everywhere, street markets and nightlife all around you, you knowing you're about to go on a formidable magical girl adventure.

Idk but I adore this vibe so much, it has so much nostalgic and comforting vibes.

The fact that a girlgroup is willing to go in this direction when a lot of them are strapping on combat boots (nothing wrong with girlcrush, on the contrary, love it) is really refreshing. (Please don't get me started on the NewJeans drama, I love Newjeans and I'll It and I don't care about the drama and controversies, I'm just happy there's music please leave me alone, I love them both).

My World

A very nice opening track. It's bubbly and sweet, love the muffled vocals in the beginning. It feels like the opening song to a 90s girl anime. I really like the girls voices. The bass is also very yummy. It really sets the tone for the rest of the album : cute anime girls, retro game boy vibes and big doe eyes.

Magnetic

The flagship of this debut album. I know it has been all over the internet, and for good reasons. It's super catchy, adorable and a treat for the ears. Love the retro beats and game boy like sounds, the rich bass and rythm of the song are real hooks, but what sells it for me is this melodic little piano/synth/game arperggio in the background. It adds so much depth and dimension to the song. The chorus is obviously a hit. I love their voices, the arrangement, the ambiance and melody, it all just flows so well. It's a really fresh and addicitve song.

Midnight Fiction

Soooo underrated. I love this song, it really feels like sitting in your bedroom staring out the window, watching starshowers. Again, the instrumental is absolutely killing. I feel like it's the bass that pulls every song of them together so well, plus this little melody in the background. It really makes every song a little treat, like a sweet box of chocolate. The chorus is also very catchy, cute and rich at the same time.

Lucky Girl Syndrome

I think this might be my least favourite song of the album just because it strives a bit away from their original concept, or at least I feel like it's a little less original (i KNOW NewJeans has a asimilar sound, leave me alone). To me at least, it doesn't feel like a cute and shy girls night pyjama party with pillow fights and pastel bubbles but more like very extroverted girls strolling through a park in broad day light, and I just feel the impression I'll It gave me through their other songs is more of an anime magical girl night ambiance. Anywayyys, it's still a good song but not my favourite.

Conclusion

As Taejiu said on Youtube, music is great but TikTok ruined Kpop. Fight me but I agree. The songs are so good but way too short, what happened to My World, it's not even two min long. I'm also aware of their... questionable live vocals but that doesn't make me enjoy their album less. I really like listening to it, it's super comforting and cute. I'm sad about all the backlash they got, especially with all the shit happening at Hybe, but hey, so's the world. I'm just here enjoying the music.

Just some thoughts about kpop songs and albums and other music coming out or that I just wanna talk about (hyperfixations oblige). It is very self indulging.
