It was hours after Carloās death, and she still found herself lingering here. She had a candle now for light, even more bottlesā there seemed to be endless bottles of wine and Marisa was wondering if she should resist the urge to drink for the rest of the night. She wasnāt thinking right, and it didnāt take long for her to realize that only Lyra could do this to her; make her this falling apart and shattered. The last time she had gotten this drunk was when Lyra left her the first time, and here she was doing it again. She was heartbroken, and she had no other way to try suffocating her sorrows.
Eventually, she picked up the candle in itās holder, beginning to walk. Where, she didnāt know. It was aimless wandering. Trembling, tears in her eyes, she tried biting back such pitiful emotion as she continued forward. Her daemon walked behind her at a distance, keeping a slow pace to match hers.Ā
Marisa stopped walking after a while when she saw a figure. Sniffling, her hand firmly wiped at her eyes, hoping to remove evidence of her tears. She didnāt do a very good job at this, however. The woman wasnāt sober enough.Ā
āHello?ā she called out, raising her candle outwards to cast a light. The face she recognized shocked Marisa. The scholar she spoke to before, for some reason in this world too. āDr. Malone?ā her voice shakily asked. āWhat are you doing here?ā
herĀ footstepsĀ ringĀ throughĀ theĀ emptyĀ streetsĀ ofĀ aĀ worldĀ notĀ herĀ own.Ā Ā Ā Ā ALONE, Ā BUT Ā NOT Ā ALONE:Ā Ā Ā Ā severalĀ timesĀ duringĀ theĀ day,Ā maryĀ swearsĀ sheĀ seesĀ somethingĀ flickerĀ withĀ movementĀ inĀ theĀ cornerĀ ofĀ herĀ eye.Ā strayĀ animals?Ā people?Ā Ā Ā Ā ... shadows?Ā Ā Ā Ā that'sĀ notĀ tooĀ outĀ ofĀ theĀ question,Ā isĀ it?Ā Ā Ā despiteĀ itĀ all,Ā maryĀ doesn'tĀ feelĀ tooĀ unnerved.Ā wary,Ā sure,Ā butĀ notĀ unnerved.
notĀ evenĀ asĀ it'sĀ gettingĀ dark.Ā Ā Ā she'dĀ packedĀ aĀ coupleĀ ofĀ torchesĀ withĀ her,Ā includingĀ aĀ windupĀ torch;Ā consideringĀ theĀ lackĀ ofĀ socketsĀ andĀ batteriesĀ aroundĀ here,Ā it'sĀ theĀ oneĀ sheĀ decidesĀ toĀ useĀ forĀ theĀ foreseeableĀ future.Ā Ā Ā Ā theĀ lightĀ isĀ faint,Ā Ā Ā Ā barelyĀ illuminatingĀ theĀ wallsĀ onĀ eitherĀ side,Ā butĀ maryĀ canĀ seeĀ theĀ pathĀ inĀ frontĀ ofĀ herĀ andĀ that'llĀ do.Ā she'sĀ debatingĀ theĀ meritsĀ (Ā andĀ ethicsĀ )Ā ofĀ settlingĀ downĀ inĀ aĀ secludedĀ areaĀ orĀ simplyĀ wanderingĀ intoĀ anĀ unlockedĀ house,Ā whenĀ sheĀ seesĀ aĀ steadyĀ lightĀ upĀ aheadĀ callingĀ herĀ name.Ā Ā Ā Ā WAITāĀ Ā Ā Ā wasĀ thatāāĀ ?
āĀ Ā Ā ā¦Ā coulter.Ā MARISA Ā COULTER.Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā asĀ disbelievingĀ asĀ maryĀ sounds,Ā it'sĀ notĀ poisedĀ asĀ aĀ question:Ā Ā Ā Ā ofĀ courseĀ she'dĀ beĀ here.Ā Ā Ā Ā becauseĀ whoĀ elseĀ wouldĀ sheĀ bumpĀ intoĀ inĀ anotherĀ worldĀ thanĀ theĀ mysteriousĀ womanĀ whoĀ espousedĀ experimentalĀ theologyĀ andĀ turnedĀ upĀ zeroĀ searchĀ results?Ā Ā Ā Ā almostĀ asĀ ifĀ sheĀ probablyĀ isn'tĀ fromĀ Ā Ā (Ā myĀ )Ā Ā Ā oxford.Ā Ā
āĀ Ā Ā well,Ā i'mĀ lost,Ā mostly.Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā Ā it'sĀ notĀ untrue,Ā butĀ maryĀ wincesĀ atĀ herĀ answer.Ā she'sĀ heftingĀ aĀ hikingĀ backpack:Ā Ā Ā Ā notĀ exactlyĀ theĀ pictureĀ ofĀ anĀ unplannedĀ excursion.Ā tryĀ deflecting.Ā Ā Ā Ā hadĀ theĀ otherĀ womanĀ beenĀ crying?Ā Ā Ā Ā herĀ eyesĀ seemĀ red-rimmed,Ā evenĀ byĀ theĀ candlelight.Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā Ā &Ā iĀ canĀ askĀ theĀ sameĀ aboutĀ you.Ā areĀ youĀ Ā Ā āāāāĀ Ā Ā areĀ youĀ alright?Ā Ā Ā ā

one [ small ] deviation from the book that i do have Certain Opinions about is that mary doesnāt destroy the cave in the show. she doesnāt wipe the files, crush bits of hardware under her shoe, or light the manuals on fire. instead, dust seemed to shut it off by themselves. besides lacking a certain panache, it misses the opportunity to show mary going the full nine yards in the beginning; sure, going through a window to another world just because a talking computer claiming it were angels said so is pretty committed, but the cave... it was her lifeās work. its destruction by her own hand represented something.
