Regulus’s Redemption Arc

I will never understand antis insistence that Regulus Black was a villain when he was a CHILD and he’s one of the only Death Eaters with a canon redemption arc.

A child raised with pureblood supremacy as his primary belief system, who was shown a model of his parents’ retaliation if he rejected it (via his brother’s rebellions) is going to accept this belief as fact. When this child finds a powerful, charismatic leader who espouses the same beliefs and promises his followers prestige, why wouldn’t he follow him?

Regulus was a Death Eater for about a year. One year after he joined, according to Kreacher in DH (Ch. 10), Regulus sends Kreacher to assist with an errand. He sees this as his best opportunity to impress the Dark Lord, which makes it clear that he hasn’t done so up until this point. This is not the reaction of a torturer and killer. It’s a child’s eagerness to impress a person in authority.

Consider also that Regulus Black didn’t trust his parents with Voldemort’s horcrux secret. He may have wanted to protect them from the fallout of his defection from the Death Eaters, but it also seems likely that he’d lost his faith in his parents too.

This is a 17 year old boy, who had only been in the Death Eaters for a year (most of which was while he was at school), that stumbled upon horrifying information. Learning about the horcrux sent Regulus into a spiral that not only shook him to his core, but also collapsed his belief system.

Regulus was a teenager who was shaken out of his cult programming and he didn’t have anyone in his life to turn to for help. The only person he trusted was Kreacher, a house elf that was obligated to obey his commands. He had no one outside of the realm of Voldemort’s influence to confide in.

Regulus wasn’t a master of dark magic or a renowned wizard (like Dumbledore). He was a scared child — who may or may not have even finished school — and was faced with a righted moral compass that turned his world view upside down. And yet…his response is to bravely sacrifice his own life to stop Voldemort.

That is a redemption arc. Full stop.

“Attention everyone, attention!” Barty yelled to the group, drawing everyone’s gaze almost instantly. “The impossible has finally happened!”

Regulus, who was sitting nearby, frantically whispered to him, “Barty, shut the fuck up, I swear–”

“Regulus Black, the chronically single whore, went on a date!” Barty went on anyway. “He’s got a lover, now!”

After a brief silence, the room burst into conversation.

“What?”

“Oh my God! Reg, why didn’t you tell me?”

“That’s great! Tell us the details!”

“I’m your brother and you don’t tell me anything!” Sirius whined from across the room.

Because Regulus had buried his head in his hands, Barty went on, shushing them all. “Yeah, and apparently he’s a gentleman! Picked him up in his car, took him to Le Chien Noir–”

Pandora shrieked, “I love that restaurant!”

“--pulled out his chair and everything!” Barty smirked. “Reg was a right lovesick mess when he got home last night.”

But Sirius was suddenly very suspicious, a memory bursting into his brain. “Prongs, didn’t you say you were taking your date to Le Chien Noir last night?” he asked James, who suddenly looked very guilty.

The room was quiet again for another long moment before–

“Oh my God, James is the lover!”

When Jegulus first start dating

Black brothers where they don’t start talking again until Jegulus happens (late twenties). So sometimes Sirius catches himself refer to Regulus as “James’ boyfriend” in his head, and Regulus sometimes catches himself refer to Sirius as “James’ bestfriend” in his head. Neither knows what to do, but they both feel horrible, because their brother has become a stranger.

I just realized that the Slytherin common room is underwater: you can see into the lake from the windows and the creatures passing by.

Do y'all think that, for a moment, as regulus was dragged deeper into the lake at that cave, for a very brief second, he felt at home? He went back, just before exhaling another bubble of air because he couldn't hold onto it any longer, to that place where he could read, and play board games, and gossip and plan some mischief with his boys in Slytherin. Back home.

NO THAT MAN IS HAUNTED BY HIMSELF. He says one nasty thing and instantly regrets it but he has no idea how to fix it!

He def stormed out in anger then when the door was closed realised what he had done and instantly turned back around and just 🧍 for a bit.

James pouting because he is upset and Regulus can see that he has hurt James and it actually physically hurts him because James is to be protected, even from Regulus himself.

He may not know how to say “I’m sorry” but he can show it, if James lets him. That man is pulling all the stops, nothing is too far when he is trying to show he is sorry. (James knows what Regulus is doing and even when he feels better he still milks it a bit just so Regulus will keep going)

Of course, Regulus will eventually find the courage and find the words to actually say “I’m sorry” and James would explain to him why what he said hurt him, both of them would talk out their fight calmly.

In the instant that James needs space, Regulus will give it to him but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a wake at night trying to figure out how to fix it. That man is calling Lily and Pandora at 3 am, sleep deprived and half insane because “I messed up so bad, Dora. He probably hates me.” And “why is my tongue poison? I’m poison. I poisoned him.” And “I can’t even fucking say it! Do you know how frustrating that is! I can’t fucking say that I’m. Fucking. Sorry. WHY! Why is that so hard. ‘I’m sorry, James’ fucking stupid fucking-” and “I should get him flowers, sunflowers. You know, they’re his favourite… do you remember that time-” and “-it’s not even like the words are difficult to say. I can say it perfectly fine when I don’t mean it! Why the fuck do those stupid fucking tiny ass words get lost in my fucking oesophagus when I fucking. Mean. Them.”

Lily is definitely recording the call and sending it to James. I don’t make the rules.

Regulus shows up at James’ door the next day, sunflowers in hand, his nicest clothes on. Only to hear his voice, from his call with Pandora and Lily last night, playing from James’ phone as he opens the door with the widest grin on his face. “You’re fucking sorry, are you?” James would ask with that shit eating grin.

Resigned. Regulus offers the flowers and speaks a quiet apology, whilst his red cheeks betray him.

THEN THEY TALK because they were built on heathy communication and Regulus really respects that.
