i think something that isn't discussed enough is the canonical horrors of the black family, walburga in particular. i'm not talking about walburga and orion being cousins or something, i'm talking about how it's very unlike the family a lot of people interpret it to be. the blacks weren't poised people, they were batshit crazy. they didn't follow the Perfect Family with the strong man, submissive wife and two kids, they didn't follow the Perfect Family with a present man, sane wife and ... kids.

walburga's portrait is so forgotten but that's likely how she was when she was alive, too, because portrait's don't go insane after they've been painted. her canon description isn't the woman make her out to be at all.

"The old woman was drooling, her eyes were rolling, the yellowing skin of her face stretched taut as she screamed..."

that is walburga black!! that's lady black!! that is someone way more interesting that "evil woman who pretends to be proper"!!

orion is nothing. nothing to sirius (who's our informant of the Blacks) and nothing to grimmauld place. there's no portrait of him, walburga doesn't mention him, sirius mentions him once, and, maybe most interesting of all, the room sirius retreats to is his mother's, not his parents'.

all of this to show one of two things: wizarding family ideals were vastly different from muggle ones or the Blacks didn't care about how they were perceived. which is, again, so much more interesting than "we're really messed up it's actually all a secret and everyone thinks we're fine".

the kids part is interesting because both sirius and regulus chose their own destinies independent of their parents, with sirius leaving them and the blood purity they stood for to go fight against it and regulus going in the opposite extreme and signing up to be a death eater. (it's important to note that walburga and orion were not death eaters, and there's reason to believe that regulus fought to become one !!)

it breaks so many of the tropes you see in media... only to be reduced to something exactly like it in fanon. please guys i swear they're so much more interesting when you look past the Alcoholic Dad, Abusive Mom, Helpless Kids dynamic
