The imprisonment within the Cage continues. Sam Winchester’s soul is gone. Lucifer and Michael remain, as does Michael’s best friend, Adam Milligan.

Michael’s best friend. Maintaining a best friendship with Adam Milligan is as gratifying as it is humbling. Friendship is a human conception, an extension of Free Will. Father did not design angels with Free Will. He Blessed angels with Purpose. And yet, the Archangel Michael maintains a best friendship with Adam. It is awesome, and Michael likes it. Very much.

But what constitutes a friendship? As the centuries pass within Hell and Michael’s connection to Adam grows ever deeper, the Archangel begins to discern just how much he cares for the human. How much he will always care for the human. However, when Lucifer is removed from the Cage while still Michael remains, the Archangel must confront a devasting truth. The outcome of which jeopardizes the very foundation of Michael’s best friendship and threatens his relationship with the one being that Michael has grown more devoted to than even God.

Hey, it's Feb 5th

Re-reading my fic. Feb 5th is the day of Midam's anniversary -- well, their anniversary of entering Hell together. So happy anniversary, everyone!

This is great! I love the ugly sweaters 😆 And their faces! There is so much drama in those expressions. I'm really curiously about whether the star is being forcefully put atop the tree or being removed from it. I feel like whatever happens, Adam would somehow win out -- even if Michael won, he'd end up letting Adam have his way lol.

Working on Chapter 10 of Discerning Devotion, and wow, has Michael's character grown. I originally outlined this chapter about a year and a half ago. Michael is so underdeveloped by comparison to where he is now, that I had to chunk the entire chapter outline and re-write it. Like I'm very proud of Michael's character growth, but I'm wondering how many other chapters will have to be completely redone in the future 😅

Oh, this one is actually an easy ask! Please see this fic (Lifelife) for a practical demonstration. It's a spin-off story from the Sins of the Father series that occurs after Discerning Devotion ends. Basically, Michael and Adam get out of the Cage but then Chuck raptures Adam's soul per canon. With Adam gone, Michael's being does destabilize, and he basically goes off the deep end.

Originally chapter 8 and chapter 9 were one big chapter, but I actually had to split the chapter in half because it hit so hard that it actually lessened the impact of Adam's pining by comparison 😦 Also by splitting, anyone who doesn't want to read Michael getting a gut punch, can just skip chapter 9, entirely.

Chapter 8 Update

I’ve been hard at work writing chapter 8! I think it will be up in about a week and a half, give or take. The chapter is currently clocking in at 8,000 words, but I’m guessing it will probably end up around 12,000 words.  It is a rollercoaster of a chapter. Here’s the opening paragraph 😁

“It was quite good loving Adam and being loved in return. Quite good. Never had Michael so loved a human before. Although always the Archangel loved humanity above all other Creation — as directed by Father's edict — Michael's love was applied to the species holistically, never to an individual human. Loving Adam as an individual human was different. Even, the Aspect of Michael's mind devoted to tactical planning hypothesized that perhaps loving Adam differently than Michael loved other humans indicated that Adam was Michael's favorite human. Indeed, this seemed a likely conclusion. After all, Adam was Michael's best friend. Much did Michael maintain "in common" with Adam. Therefore, Adam could be Michael's favorite human. It was a pleasing conjecture.”
