~Whispers Through the Bond~

(Steve x Reader Wheel of Time Au)

[I am highly upset by the news of the Wheel of Time being canceled and since I've had it in the back of my head already, I am going to write a Ward!Steve and Aes Sedai!Reader fic / headcanons.]

Intro info:

A bond between an Aes Sedai (AS) and her Ward (W) is very intimate and personal. Using the One Power to create the bond, the two get a permanent mental and emotional connection. For the AS, this means knowledge about his location, his general physical and emotional state, if he is alive etc. The Ward in return, gets a boost in strength, stamina and faster healing, the ability to resist fatigue and pain more effectively. He will also usually have an understanding of his AS emotional state as well.

The bonding ritual is usually offered (by the AS) and accepted (by the W) and after the bonding is done, the W's duty is to protect his AS at all costs, especially during travel or combat. Depending on their relationship, he is also her confidant and companion or even partner in certain cases. The AS is still the authority figure (as she is wielding the one power, she also has the power to shield or turn the bond "off" temporarily) but most AS share mutual respect and friendship with their Warders. While the bond is not inherently romantic or s*xual, some Aes Sedai and their Warders form a deep emotional bond, some keep a commander - soldier like relationship and some may become romantically involved.

If an Aes Sedai dies, the Warder often becomes grief-stricken to the point of madness or suicide, due to the emotional shock of the bond snapping. If a Warder dies, the Aes Sedai feels the loss deeply but can survive, though it's very painful.

W's are highly trained swordsmen and survivalists and AS choose them based on skills, trust and their personal connection with them. Some AS bond men they've known for years, while others bond complete strangers based off their skills. Some AS bond more than one W as well.

(Ward!Steve and Ward!Bucky anyone? 😌)

And now to the Headcanons!

Aes Sedai!Reader and Warder!Steve would include:

-Novice!Y/N watching Steve train in the tower, swordfighting with his fellow Warders in training. (He would probably use shields a lot as well, making him the perfect option for a protector and confidant.)

-N!Y/N spending more and more time watching Steve train, pretending to study and read her history book, all while catching glimpses from him training and smiling at her after his wins. Y/N could swear she saw him wink at her once.

-Steve "accidentally" bumping into her when she does her tower duties. He would hold a book in his hand (one he noticed her reading a few weeks before) and struck up a conversation as she mops the floors of the tower. "Mop duty, huh?" Y/N smiled and nodded back. "You free from training?" Steve nodded, "Figured I'd catch up on some reading." He motioned to the cover of the book in his hand, and Y/N couldn't help but chuckle. "You keep tracks of the books I'm reading?" He cracked a small smile and blushed, walking away. "Maybe."

-Steve on the training grounds is very different from Steve off of it. Steve in training? Confident, cocky even. Normally? He would blush by you looking at him for too long. An actual gentleman, shy at first but keeps an eye on you, hoping you'd bond him when you become an Aes Sedai.

-He would bring you snacks and make you take breaks when you bury yourself in studies in your novice quarters.

-Would eventually become a very good friend who you could trust and share most things with. He is smart, kind, sweet, funny and kind of a dumbass at times but you of course loved him for it.

-Accepted!Y/N excitedly running to tell Steve she passed through the arches. Steve hugging her and telling her how proud he is.

-Aes Sedai!Y/N asking Steve to bond with her, to which he accepts without hesitation.

Steve Headcanons pt. 2:

[I once again came up with a bunch of headcanoncs bc I am delulu and think y'all need more Steve content hehe 💪😌✨️

-Reader meets Steve before he becomes a supersoldier and you date for a while. He would be the most respectful, kind gentleman (that we know him as) and honestly just a cutie in general. He'd show up with books you mentioned you wanted to read, curling up with you under a blanket while reading out loud to you. Would probably be too panicked to move when you fall asleep, scared he might if he just breathes a little too hard. You of course, don't and he soon follows suit, falling asleep right with you. He would bring snacks, hug and hold you when you had an especially bad day, but also making you laugh like no one else. Before he manages to get drafted, he proposes to you. You stood there, surprised for a moment and he quickly stammered: "I know I know, we are still very young and you got drafted not so long ago, but just in case anything happens during the war I at least felt like it was right to ask. I can't let you go without you knowing how much I love you and I want a life with you after the war is over. I promise to return to you." You were practically in tears at this point, and you embraced him, cupped his face and kissed him. "Of course I will."

-You gave him a good dose of tongue lashing when finding out he had been drafted too, (commiting a federal crime but oops) and he assured you he would be safe and that you don't have to worry, which didn't help ease your anxiety at all. However, if by sheer luck or fate, you ended up serving in the army right beside him, becoming the platoon nurse.

-When he volunteered for the serum, you fought tooth and nail for him to stop being so reckless, to which he insisted on serving his country as best as he could, that he would try to do this one good thing. This of course hurt you, because that could mean he would leave you by yourself, maybe breaking the promise he made you. You stormed off, leaving Steve sighing and shaking his head.

-It was almost two days after that argument, when you heard a knock on the door to the nurse's office. You sniffled and wiped the tear streaming from your face as you cleared your throat. "Come in!" The doorhandle turned and in came your husband- now entirely different. The big muscular (and very handsome) man standing in front of you looked at you unsure of how you'd react. Your vision blurred and you stumbled across the room to him, tears streaming down your face again. You grabbed Steve by the collar. "Don't you EVER scare me like that again!!" He embraced you tightly without saying a word, kissing the top of your head and rocking you both. "You are such a stubborn, reckless idiot." You sobbed into his shoulder, voice muffled by the fabric of his army shirt. "I know honey, I know." He whispered. "I'm sorry." You managed to calm down enough to tell him how you spent the past two day thinking he would die, how you have been scared to hear the news of his passing. He apologized to you profusely, hugging and kissing you til you weren't as angry with him anymore. He promised not to be this reckless again. (The man's middle names are probably Reckless and Grant but ok. Guess we'll take it for now.)

(We're jumping way ahead now but bear with me.)

So say both you and Steve somehow ended up frozen and you reunited after all those years, reconnecting and living as a married couple for the first time.

-He would rarely go to bed or fall asleep first, but when he did he would wake up to you climbing into bed next to him. He'd shift himself closer and almost immediately put his arm around you, snuggling into your neck, kissing you softly before falling back asleep.

-He is 100% the type of man to wake up in the middle of the night (usually after a nightmare), put the blanket back over you and hold you closer, listening to your peaceful breathing before falling back asleep.

-When he goes for his morning run and you wake up, groaning and begging him to stay, he places small kisses on your lips, forehead, cheeks, neck and nose promising he will return soon and that you should fall back asleep. When he does get back, he sits down on your side of the bed and kisses your face softly. "Goodmorning baby." You inhale sharply and open your eyes. "Come back to bed my love." you say groggily and he smiles. "I would my darling, but I really need a shower. Care to join me?" You stretch, scrunching your face. "Mmmph. Fine I'll get up." He chuckled, getting of the bed to walk into the bathroom. "That's my good girl."

-Says he can't cook but will still try to learn from you, from the internet and books he'd come across. He would still ask for your help just in case, but manages just fine usually. Always makes you taste test, making sure you like it before serving.

Steve Headcanons:

- Will insist on carrying everything for you. You make a quick grocery run to get some milk? He is by your side, carrying it. You tell him it's okay and that you can do it, he always smiles and tells you "Yes, but you don't have to."

- You are on your way home and get caught in the rain? This man will meet you with an umbrella, carrying it so you don't get more wet. (Although you point out how the umbrella should cover him as well but of course he won't listen, stubborn as he is.)

(- He would also likely pick you up and drive you home regardless of the weather, insisting you don't have to walk now that you have him and he loves to drive.)

- Even though he loves getting up really early for his morning runs, he sometimes stays in bed and leaves small, soft kisses on your face. When you try to get up, he pulls you in closer and nuzzles into you. "Five more minutes." "But Steve, I'll be late." "I'll drive you." He says muffled, his face snuggled into your chest as he hugs you. Doesn't matter if he is working or not, this man is a real definition of chivalry.

-When you get sick and you insist that you are okay and keep doing chores around the house, he lifts you over his shoulder and takes you to the bedroom to tuck you into bed. He'd instruct you to lay there and rest, then leave the room for a few minutes. You are already in a fevery dream state when you feel the bed shift from his weight. He'd put a big cup of tea on the nightstand next to you and get under the covers to just hold you close while you rest, making sure you stay in bed.

-Will 100% pout if you just say "Bye, love you!" "Aren't you forgetting something my love?" You look confused at the pouting Steve by the door of the kitchen. Oh. You get over to him and give him a sweet kiss, feeling him smile on your lips before you pull away. "That's much better."

- Would be an absolute velcro husband. He would prep ingredients as you cook dinner, wash dishes, take out the trash, all to make your job easier. When he is done he would get up to you, hug you from behind and kiss your cheek and the spot behind your ear.

Bonus:

- You for some reason have to come to the tower to work with the Avengers on a mission, Steve of course already knows about this but has to keep it professional, so after the debriefing you walk down the corridor and suddnely get yanked into a smaller meeting room, Steve standing in his suit, shield and all, pulling you in for a kiss. "Hey, baby." He says huskily. "Honey you already knew I was coming." He smiles and plants another kiss on your lips. "I know, but I missed you."
