Why we love motorsports

Until two years ago I had never shown any interest in watching any sport what so ever. Surrounded by people obsessed with football and hockey, I couldn’t understand it. But that was before I found motorsports. F1 was the sport that made me finally understand what sports can be. Sports is about the stories. It’s about how Nico and Lewis, laying on Nico’s father yacht, dreamt about being in F1 together, only for them to get there and achieve everything they wanted - but losing each other. It is about Vettel taking his trophy to school and being bullied, only to become a four time world champion. It is about how Marc never gave up on the sport he loved, despite injuries, and is now once again leading the championship. It is about Rossi never being given a real chance in F1, only to win the Indy500. It is about Susie Wolff being the most recent woman to take part in an f1 weekend - doing everything in her power to make sure she will not be the last. It is about Pato being overtaken on the last lap on the Indy500, and once again losing the win he most craves - but never giving up. It is about Prost and Senna, forever bound by their rivalry, never escaping each other. It is about Max verstappen being portrayed as the villain, only to be treated like the hero by the rookies.It is about Daniel Ricciardo exiting the Singapore paddock with a smile on his face - realizing he will never become a world champion. It is about your childhood hero becoming your colleague, and if you are unlucky your greatest enemy. It is about Vettel being for Mick what Michael was for him. It is about dedicating your only win to the childhood friend who died doing what he loved. It is about Max knowing that if he would make it to f1, so would Charles. It is about fulfilling your dreams, about heroes and villains and found family. The stories are the heart of the sport.
