Saw this on Facebook, traced it to Reddit and I hate it I hate it I hate it. It’s likely a rage bait shitpost so call me a dupe but I have to rant.
Words apparently mean nothing anymore and cyberpunk is only three things according to the creator of this post.
Cyberpunk means a lot more than just “dystopian anti capitalist message with computers”. At the core of a lot of good cyberpunk is the exploration of advancing technology and how it separates us from our nature and creates new relationships to our own bodies on the individual and societal levels. Other common themes are high-tech meets low-life, megacities (arguably another metaphor for the separation from nature), dystopian societies, and yes, anti-capitalism. I think another trait of (good) cyberpunk is that it is at most techno-neutral and trends towards techno-pessimistic. No intelligent reading of cyberpunk is truly optimistic about the technologies described.
There is great cyberpunk that does not meet all of these requirements: Ghost in the Shell follows an anti-terrorist police department and is less anti-capitalist than other cyberpunk properties.
Also I have feelings about the word dystopian and that in order to be a dystopia there has to be some secret or lie at the heart of the society. A lot of cyberpunk is just dysfunctional, not necessarily dystopian in my opinion.
So back to the graphic above. I’m not familiar with all of the properties above but I can talk about several of them.
Blade runner is a foundational piece of cyberpunk and has shaped a lot of the aesthetics of the genre in the future. No notes, Blade Runner is cyberpunk.
TRON: Legacy fits the aesthetic and does technically pose some questions about the line between technology and humanity, but not really from the perspective of humans/humanity modifying themselves, and it trusts a Tech CEO to do the right thing. Cyberpunk impostor wearing the right neon clothes.
The original Star Wars trilogy has cybernetic enhancements (in the form of disability aids) and has some low-life elements but ultimately it is a space opera
The Jetsons is raypunk, a techno-optimistic sci-fi. That’s all I really know about it.
The Lorax is intentionally the stupidest entry on this list. It is a fable about the exploitation and destruction of nature, and has nothing outside of an anticapitalist message to link it to cyberpunk.
The bottom row of this meme format is where all the outlandish claims go. But this idiot didn’t realize that Robots is cyberpunk full stop. It’s been a long time since I watched it, but if I remember correctly you have a megacorporation (cyberpunk as hell to have one of those) suppressing innovation by young entrepreneurs (anti-capitalist messaging) and leaving poor robots to die of planned obsolescence (anti-capitalist, and examining the relationship between technology and body, cyberpunk double check mark). OP forgot that because it’s sunlit and for children that Robots is actually cyberpunk.
Don’t know what cryptoland is and I’m not about to find out.
But Robots highlights how cyberpunk can be misconstrued, which is largely about aesthetics. I could argue with a straight face that Severance is cyberpunk despite taking place in a small town, since there is technology that affects people’s minds so they can better serve a shady gigantic corporation. Severance actually goes out of its way to have dates technology on the Severed floor, and none of the vehicles on the show look like they were built more recently than 1995. However, the other elements of cyberpunk are there.
Similarly, Dollhouse is a TV show that is arguably cyberpunk despite taking place in like 2008 Los Angeles. The future-forward episodes are definitely post-apocalyptic cyberpunk wastelands where the wealthy can transfer their consciousnesses into any body, a privilege they abuse by wasting bodies away with their indulgences, it’s Altered Carbon by way of mad max and Joss Whedon.
At this point, a quasi-reliable test for whether a piece of media is Cyberpunk is if Dichen Lachman is in the cast.
